Thanks for sharing your stories. ---------------------------------------------- LEAFY BRANCHES SPROUT FROM SHORT TWIG By Jennie Macfie   jenniesmail@uk2.net The shortest twig on my ancestral tree was my maternal grandfather's. His wife's large family was Anglo-Irish. I could trace them easily for five hundred years, and more than double that in some lines. My paternal lines are fairly easy to follow for two hundred to three hundred years through Scots Origins. However, as a genealogy-mad child, when I asked Grandpa about his ancestry, he didn't know very much at all. He said his father had discouraged talk about "family." Although he never said so, I think Grandpa's dad was a bit difficult to get on with. There seems to have been some kind of rift. Grandpa knew his mother's maiden name, JAMIESON -- "pronounced Jimmison" -- I can still hear him saying, the given names of three of her brothers, and of her father, and her mother's maiden name, STRANGEWAYS -- "pronounced Strangways." He also said he had a Great-Uncle William for whom he had been named. He had a painting of two little girls, one of whom looked just like me. He was not sure who they were but thought one might be his grandmother or great-grandmother. Also, he had inherited a pair of miniatures of young women dressed in the style of the 1800s - he was only able to give me their surname -- OTTLEY or OTLEY. That was about it - I felt sorry for him, not having many relations like Granny. I wrote it all down in a notebook, which, thank heavens, I still have. Finally, with a computer and some spare time (now that my children are older), I took up genealogy again. It was amazing how so many notes of what members of the family had told me turned out to be correct. But I could find no details on the Internet for Grandpa's family. Grandpa had lived to be ninety-three; all his siblings had died. He had only one nephew, who had "gone to the bad" and with whom he had lost touch. My mother was the only child who had survived long enough to have children. His quarter of the database was almost bare--poor Grandpa. Every so often, I searched WorldConnect (http://wc.rootsweb.com/) for his line, with no luck. Then, one day I went to WorldConnect and, even before I entered the name of my second great-grandfather, JAMIESON, I knew that something would surely turn up, and it did. There was my second great-grandfather, and there were his sons, but my great-grandmother wasn't mentioned. I got in touch with the database owner and we exchanged information. I discovered that Grandpa had eleven first cousins. They hadn't known about him, either. Some of their children are still alive, and are my mother's second cousins. They have done a lot of research on the family. Suddenly, that twig I'd found turned into a big leafy branch. We haven't identified the subjects of the paintings yet, but I'm sure it'll happen in time. I even found Grandpa's Great-Uncle William, who was a witness at his brother's wedding in 1855. My most precious Christmas present was knowing these new cousins, and what they have revealed about my grandpa's family. Without RootsWeb, I can't think how this would ever have been possible. One recent story [RWR 5:2, 9 January 2002 "Humor: Age Is Relative"] about the ninety-one-year-old aunt talking about the eighty-four-year-old "boy next door" helping her out was great. This made me think of my aunt. She was always on the go and didn't stop for anything, even when she slipped on the ice one year. She thought that hurt, but went about her job of volunteering. She delivered meals-on-wheels to the elderly. Weeks later, as she kept hurting, she went to the doctor and found she had broken her hip. She had to have surgery and there was a long recovery, but she was eager to get back to her volunteering. Even though she was eighty-five years old, she said she couldn't miss taking the meals to the old people on her route because they looked forward to it so much. They were in their sixties. 7.
