Thanks for sharing your stories. ---------------------------------------------- LEAFY BRANCHES SPROUT FROM SHORT TWIG By Jennie Macfie jenniesmail@uk2.net The shortest twig on my ancestral tree was my maternal grandfather's. His wife's large family was Anglo-Irish. I could trace them easily for five hundred years, and more than double that in some lines. My paternal lines are fairly easy to follow for two hundred to three hundred years through Scots Origins. However, as a genealogy-mad child, when I asked Grandpa about his ancestry, he didn't know very much at all. He said his father had discouraged talk about "family." Although he never said so, I think Grandpa's dad was a bit difficult to get on with. There seems to have been some kind of rift. Grandpa knew his mother's maiden name, JAMIESON -- "pronounced Jimmison" -- I can still hear him saying, the given names of three of her brothers, and of her father, and her mother's maiden name, STRANGEWAYS -- "pronounced Strangways." He also said he had a Great-Uncle William for whom he had been named. He had a painting of two little girls, one of whom looked just like me. He was not sure who they were but thought one might be his grandmother or great-grandmother. Also, he had inherited a pair of miniatures of young women dressed in the style of the 1800s - he was only able to give me their surname -- OTTLEY or OTLEY. That was about it - I felt sorry for him, not having many relations like Granny. I wrote it all down in a notebook, which, thank heavens, I still have. Finally, with a computer and some spare time (now that my children are older), I took up genealogy again. It was amazing how so many notes of what members of the family had told me turned out to be correct. But I could find no details on the Internet for Grandpa's family. Grandpa had lived to be ninety-three; all his siblings had died. He had only one nephew, who had "gone to the bad" and with whom he had lost touch. My mother was the only child who had survived long enough to have children. His quarter of the database was almost bare--poor Grandpa. Every so often, I searched WorldConnect (http://wc.rootsweb.com/) for his line, with no luck. Then, one day I went to WorldConnect and, even before I entered the name of my second great-grandfather, JAMIESON, I knew that something would surely turn up, and it did. There was my second great-grandfather, and there were his sons, but my great-grandmother wasn't mentioned. I got in touch with the database owner and we exchanged information. I discovered that Grandpa had eleven first cousins. They hadn't known about him, either. Some of their children are still alive, and are my mother's second cousins. They have done a lot of research on the family. Suddenly, that twig I'd found turned into a big leafy branch. We haven't identified the subjects of the paintings yet, but I'm sure it'll happen in time. I even found Grandpa's Great-Uncle William, who was a witness at his brother's wedding in 1855. My most precious Christmas present was knowing these new cousins, and what they have revealed about my grandpa's family. Without RootsWeb, I can't think how this would ever have been possible. Thank you. 2. NEWS AND NOTES ------------------ 2a.SPOTLIGHT ON SOME DISTINCTIVE WEB PAGES AT ROOTSWEB ENGLAND. ONE-PLACE GENEALOGY. ENGLAND, WALES, SCOTLAND, IRELAND PARISH, and PROBATE RECORDS. Can't find your ancestor in the census? Try parish or probate records. As part of the UK/Ireland Collection at Ancestry.com you can search more than 15 million names in its United Kingdom and Ireland Parish and Probate databases. These subscription databases are a collection of historical parish and probate registers. Records range in date from the early 1500s to the mid- to late-1800s. Some non-parish records are included from as early as the 12th century. Parish records--primarily baptisms, marriages, and burials--provide the best source of vital record information in the centuries before civil registration. The records include baptisms/christenings, burials, marriages, tombstone inscriptions, obituaries, tax lists, wills, and other miscellaneous types of records. Also included are some records from non-conformist churches. All of the data was converted as it was originally presented in various published registers and books. For this reason, you will find interesting phonetic spellings and large descriptive tables of contents. Click here to learn more: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=3323&sourceid=481 2d. MYFAMILY.COM AND RELATIVE GENETICS PARTNER TO DELIVER GENETIC GENEALOGICAL SERVICE ---------------------------------------------- MyFamily.com and Relative Genetics, a world-class genomics laboratory and a leader in establishing definitive biologic relationships through DNA testing and analysis, have entered an exclusive partnership to distribute the Ancestry(TM) GenetiKit(TM), the most complete and extensive DNA test available. The partnership and new product combine traditional genealogy with the latest technology making it easier to answer the question: "Where did I come from?" The Ancestry GenetiKit will be introduced at GENTECH, the conference for genealogy and technology in Boston, Massachusetts, on 25 January 2002. The test will be available exclusively through Ancestry.com, a member of the MyFamily.com network, on 25 January and can be ordered online for $219.00. The home collection kit comes with a swab to painlessly and easily collect a sample of cells from the inside of your cheek, which is then returned to the laboratory where DNA testing is completed within a few weeks. The Ancestry GenetiKit can be used to test for paternal-line relationships through a test known as the Surname Test or Y Chromosome Test. The Surname test analyzes twenty-three markers making it the highest resolution commercial Y-chromosome test in the world. These markers identify the provider's genetic identity inherited from his ancestors. Other tests available using the GenetiKit include the Mitochondrial DNA Native American Haplotype Test and Mitochondrial DNA Sequencing Test used for establishing maternal relationships. The genetic identity of the provider will be compared against a database of over nineteen thousand DNA samples, the world's largest database of genetic genealogical samples. The results that will be reported to the provider include an analysis of the provider's personal genetic identity and a comparison with surnames contained in the database to determine relationships. Ancestry.com users can use their personal genetic identity to find other Ancestry.com users who are living relatives. Furthermore, if a match is determined with another sample in the database, the provider will receive ancestral information on that match including a name, place, and date. "By gathering genetic data from populations throughout the world, Relative Genetics and The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation, in conjunction with development from the BYU Center for Molecular Genealogy, are building the world's largest database of genetic populations. These populations are sorted by place and time so finding out where and when your genetic ancestors may have lived is easier," said Dr. Scott Woodward, PhD., Professor of Microbiology and faculty member of the Molecular Biology Program at Brigham Young University, Laboratory Director of Relative Genetics. Genealogy has traditionally been done using records of people's names in association with dates and places. Almost every genealogist knows that name changes and dates are not recorded and places can be forgotten. Ancestry.com and Relative Genetics have teamed up to help fill in the missing pieces. "You carry within your DNA a record of your ancestry," said Tom Stockham, CEO of MyFamily.com. "The Ancestry GenetiKit test accesses the only record that never gets lost; your genetic heritage, DNA. By combining those DNA records with more than 1.5 billion names we currently have available online, we will offer our customers an unsurpassed ability to build family pedigrees and establish relationships between distant relatives." One recent story [RWR 5:2, 9 January 2002 "Humor: Age Is Relative"] about the ninety-one-year-old aunt talking about the eighty-four-year-old "boy next door" helping her out was great. This made me think of my aunt. She was always on the go and didn't stop for anything, even when she slipped on the ice one year. She thought that hurt, but went about her job of volunteering. She delivered meals-on-wheels to the elderly. Weeks later, as she kept hurting, she went to the doctor and found she had broken her hip. She had to have surgery and there was a long recovery, but she was eager to get back to her volunteering. Even though she was eighty-five years old, she said she couldn't miss taking the meals to the old people on her route because they looked forward to it so much. They were in their sixties. 7.
