Years ago I did some work on the name Gourley. I ran into so many spellings on that name that I finally asked a Scotsman to pronounce it. His pronounciation of the name was such a tongue twister that I could fully understand how a people, who were spelling phonetically, could spell the name so many ways. Laird seems so straight forward but I guess the same thing could apply. I have never heard a Scotsman pronounce Laird but it would interesting.
