1. [LAIRD-L] earliest Lairds
    2. Patricia Howard
    3. I have read that there was a Roger Laird of Berwickshire as early as 1257, and a Sir Thomas Laird of Peebleshire as early as 1296, but have not documented this information, so do not know if it is accurate. It would be interesting to begin with the earliest known Lairds in Scotland, then try to move their ancestry forward in hopes of discovering migration patterns. However, at this time we do not know if we are all related to one progenitor, or did the surname begin in several locations at the same time, without regards to any blood relationship? I still have the baptismal records for Paisley to transcribe, (hopefully I will have them ready for the next newsletter) then I am open to any suggestions on which records to order next. So let me know what you would like to see in the newsletter. If it is available on microfilm from Salt Lake, then I can order it. Sincerely, Patricia Laird Howard

    1. [LAIRD-L] Older records than OPRs/IGI?
    2. Subj: Date: 05/08/99 To: glaird@mozart.inet.co.th Graeme On re-reading your message and looking at the database for the Family Association, I realise you know about the Renfrewshire IGI! The records in Caithness go back further, partly due to the thoroughness of the Kirk in keeping records, the source of the IGI. I don't know if this points to Caithness as a point of origin for all Lairds, but it will work for many. Only noble families can trace their records back further, as their resources and the need to establish inheritance made it important. The Sinclair Chiefs can therefore point back towards Rognvald the Mighty, Jarl of More and Romsdal in 900 or so as their origin, but before that no-one seems to know where anyone was! I hope this helps. Yours aye Iain

My father purchased the clock in England about 35 years ago and it was estimated to be well over 100 years old then. On the face of the clock is written the name "D. W. Laird" and beneath it "Leith". I was wondering if in your research you might have discovered a clock maker named Laird that lived in Leith, Scotland sometime in the early 1800's? B. 3. Hi Floyd: Finally some one is from my area!! I have a copy of David Laird's will in Wash. co. VA and a copy of James Laird's will. My ancestory Elizabeth Laird married John Moody in Wash. Co. VA in 1796. I believe she was son of James, but born after his will was made. They named a son James. I also have a Gilliland ancestor. Many of my ancestors fought at king's Mountain. I don't have anything else on David's family. Can you help me? Doris Moody Lewis At 05:10 PM 8/5/99 -0500, you wrote: >Hello, >I am new to this list. 3. Hello, I am new to this list. I am descended from Anne Laird who married William Alexander on 10/13/1778 in Rockbridge County, VA. Anne's father was David Laird who died in Washington County, VA in 1803. His will was recorded in Wash. Co., VA on 11/29/1800 and proved 2/15/1803. David's wife was Margaret. She must have died before 1800 because she wasn't named in his will. >From the will of David Laird, here is his family: David Laird died 1803 children: David Laird - oldest son Joseph Caldwell -son-in-law Edward Wilson - son-in-law William Laird - son William Alexander - son-in-law (wife was Anne Laird, daughter of David) Elizabeth Laird McCune - daughter Sarah Laird Gilliland - daughter Mary Laird Ferril - daughter (husband was probably Robert Ferril) ******************************************************************************** I am sure David Laird was a Revolutionary War soldier as was his son-in-law, William Alexander. On April 15, 1778 in Rockbridge County, VA, the county advanced money for support of Margaret Laird and her children, while husband David Laird is in Continental service. William Alexander fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain. ******************************************************************************** I'm not sure about this. James Laird, husband of Letitia Kerr, died in 1780 at Battle of Kings Mountain. James also lived in Washington County, VA. 2. Graeme Laird
    3. I was interested to read what Ian Laird wrote about Lairds coming from Orkney and was also interested to see the trasncription of the IGI's. Does anyone know if there are any older records and any information on Lairds who moved to the lowlands. My family has been in the Renfrewshire area of Scotland since the early 1700's and I have often wondered if they cam from some other part of the country as we lose track of them. Kind regards Graeme Laird

I'll have to put your info with the rest, shake it up and start drawing some conclusions. I'll get back to you on that. Thank you very much. 3. I sent for and received from Cumberland Historical Society, all of the Laird information that they had on file. I would be happy to share or do a look up for anyone who needs this information. There was one paper that was not my family, I think they are related because of the fact that they lived in the same county, but I haven't been able to make the connection. The Society sent a page called "Laird" and in pencil "Genealogy file" The page has a list of various items about a Laird family in Mt. Holly Springs, some of the names on the page are: S. A. Laird, Miss Bertie and Jennie Frey, Mrs. Geo. Frey, Miss Annie Laird, Samuel W. Laird, George Laird son of S. W. Laird. Etc. If anyone wants look ups just send me an email. 3. Russell, Thank you for the very interesting post. Sometimes I am amazed at the peculair timing of things. I was just reading about Rosslyn Chapel and the St. Clair/ Sinclair family. I turned on my computer to look up Rosslyn Chapel and the Knights Templar. Then I read your post. How amazing to find that the topic is what I was seeking, and may possibly include a "Laird" connection. I wonder if any church records exist for Caithness? It would be interesting to extract and include in the LFA newsletter. I will check the various places he named to see which records I can order from the Family History Center. Sorry to once again bring up the "coat of arms" but his insight is interesting, and no one on this list has given documented "proof" that the Laird arms is a fake. Nor have they given any indication of what research they have done to come to that conclusion. So, like most genealogists who do not accept another ones work without seeing their documented proof, I will continue to believe that the "coat of arms" probably did belong to a Laird family in the very remote past, rather than it being an invention in this century. Sincerely, Patricia Laird Howard
