If you write to a local library (or maybe YOUR local library can handle that request for you), they might have an old phone book from back then. Someone in Edmond, Oklahoma (near Oklahoma City) copied a couple of pages for me to indicate family names, and of course the phone book had the year, which was 1905 or something shortly thereafter. Or if you can find someone online from those towns, they might be willing to check around the courthouses and find any probate records or property records....
It's nice to hear that someone has some success at this. I've been trying to get even a little hint at who my gr grandfather was for a couple years now and so far no luck. His name was M.S Laird (I have no first name, could be Manuel though). I do know that he was in Truckee, CA in 1910. I estimate that he was born in about 1879 or so, in Arkansas. Congratulations....Loie Most of my ancestors are from Newton County, Mississippi... the earliest known is my g-g-grandfather, Archibald. I have a picture of his headstone, so I know the birthdate, but I don't know ~where~ he was born. The 1850 Census implies he was born in Kentucky, but it's a large state! So, that's where I'm stuck. I'm hoping my "new" 3rd cousin might have something new... he's working on it. Then if you know the decade he was born, can you find a KY census for 10-20 years after his birth? 2. Is there some kind of census index for KY? 3. Start by guessing. If you know his religion, try going with that. Or just start checking counties at random, seeing what might come up. If there are 100 counties in KY (I have NO idea how many there are), send out a mass mailing with a form letter, snail mail, to county clerks. You'd be surprised how many are willing to help.. but a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) is always appreciated. I did lots of things like that and would get 10-12 responses a day for a few days.... they might not have your gr-grandfather but might have his cousin, or HIS father, or his mother's family. I was sent a copy of someone else's will who had the same last name, but he named my gr-grandfather's siblings before he mentioned his own. I'm sure that means they were significant cousins (and his sister was still in Germany, my folks were in the same Missouri town). I have yet to prove the exact relationship but it adds weight to my theory. Meanwhile I am taking the advice of a genealogist friend who suggested I keep a separate file on that family because the minute I confirm they are related, I'll have the whole story already ready to pop into place! Good luck, hope it helps... Bobbi

Lucy, I have been on the L-list for over a year now. Once in a while a speak up, but generally listen. I would like to join the Association. My Laird road block is my Grandfather, Charles T. Laird. He was born in Illinois, in 1875 and married in Knoxville Mo. and later moved to Iowa. The legends say that he ran away from home. Needless to say, his father has been hard to track. I am looking forward to the 1850 census from Ill. Thanks, Ronald E. George Sinclair and his followers from Caithness landed in Norway on 2nd August 1612. We landed on the 8th August at Oslo Airport and are in the South of Norway until 20th August. We will be meeting Malcolm Caithness and Niven Sinclair in Otta on 20th August for the Pillarguri Cultural Evening in the Town Hall that commemorates the Battle of Kringom/Kringen/Kringellen on 26th August 1612. We expect quite a different reception from our forbears. More information after the 20th. Yours aye Iain, Annabel & Sarah Laird

I am looking for information on my brother's line. I was adopted when I was 6 yrs old. My adopted mother was previously married to a Robert (Bob) Laird. They had two children Lester Roby Laird, born Nov 23, 1946 and Diana Lynn who passed away 3 months after she was born. She is buried in Chesterfield, IN. Bob passed away about 1974, I think. They have some family who was in the government line of work, I believe. If anyone has anything that could help me start this I would greatly appreciate it......mom will not talk about it, that is why I cannot get anything from her......... Tracey Geller
