    1. [LAIRD] James Laird - Washington County, PA

    3. I need some help. My ancestor, Samuel Laird, was born in Pennsylvania September 3, 1804. I have no real knowledge of his parentage, or town of birth. In my searching I found a family in Washinton County that might fit. I hope some of you have researched this family. John Laird and Mary Snodgrass Laird emmigrated from Donegal County, Ireland around 1800. They had sons Alexander, James, John, Jesse, Robert, and a daughter. They settled in Washington County, PA in what was called Donegal Township. John Jr married Margaret Snodgrass. Jesse married and ended up in Vermillion County, Illinois and I think maybe he moved to Iowa. James also married and had some children including a son named Samuel. I have no date of birth for Samuel except that he was the oldest. This James Laird family appears in the 1810 Census with a wife and three children. He disappears for a few years, then shows up again in Washington County in the 1840 Census. According to the "History of Guernsey County" a James Laird family appeared in Guernsey County, Ohio from Pennsylvania in 1819. This is at the same time James Albin and Barbara Hoover Albin arrived in Guernsey County with their family from Hampshire County Virginia (now Hancock County WVa.) My Samuel Laird married their daughter, Delilah Albin Secrest, in 1824. The Albin family attended Claysville Methodist Episcopal Church in Washinton County PA, as did the James Laird family. Thus, it is not inconceivable that the children of those two families played together. And, if the James Laird in Guernsey County is the same James Laird from Washington County, PA, the marriage of Samuel and Delila is not at all unusual. This is all beautiful and logical theory. But I can't prove any of the theory that my Samuel is the son of James Laird from Washington County. I hope some of you have researched the John Laird line and can help me. You can email me direct at thelairds@att.net. - Paul Laird

John Laird married a Pheobe Ford who was somenow related to Thomas Ford, a governor of Illlinois around 1850. Can't find anything on them either. Sure would appreciate some hints as to where to look. My grandfather, John Parry Laird, Jr. (born circa 1890's) was originally from Decatur, Georgia. He and my grandmother moved to San Francisco in the 1930's where our family remains. Our family intermingled with the Parry (also spelled Perry), Greene and Flake families from the southern region of the United States. Most of my relatives have these names or variations thereof included in their given names at birth. We know that we are descendant's of General Nathaneal Greene of the Revolutionary War era. It would be interesting to discover and learn more information about the Laird family.

I don't know how many children Sarah and Elim had, before she died, but Elim marries again to a Melissa (JENNINGS) JONES. She was a neighbor married to James Isham JONES and was daughter of Samuel JENNINGS and his wife, Bethany/Bethenia BAILY or HALEY from TN, also nearby neighbors. There were more children after Melissa and Elim married and one daughter, Elmyra LAIRD says she was born in Hinds Co., MS on their way to TX. The family is found in Davis (which became Dass Co., TX) in the 1870 census. By 1880, Melissa is apparently widowed and living in Kaufman Co., TX with some of the remaining children and next to one of her sons from her first marriage, Isham JONES, his wife ansd small daughter named Melissa. I've l! ost some of my computer data and am replacing it slowly, so I will add to this later. My GGrandmother is Cornelia LAIRD, daughter of Sarah and Elim LAIRD, born1854 or 1856. JBrown

    2. I'm going to give this another try, hoping that someone on this list will recognize my great grandfather and have a little info for me. - Great Grandfather - M.C. Laird, born approx. 1876 in Arkansas, he married Pearl Hopkins, also of Arkansas. They moved to Truckee, Nevada Co., California, showing up on the 1910 Census with their daughter Viola Mae. They cannot be found together in the 1920 Census. It's my understanding that Pearl, who had had two sons with M.C. between 1910 and 1915, took the three children and moved to Arizona. The two boys were, Orville Manuel and Horace Dean. M.C. was seldom heard from by the family after that. If anyone recognizes this family - I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Karen O.

    2. Good morning! If you sew or know someone who sews, and want a Scot-Celt outfit, you are in luck. Simplicity patterns has two Celtic patterns out now. #8913 is called "The Celtic Costume Collection" and has a man's kilt, spats, drape, pouch, hat (tam) and shirt in men's sizes Extra Small to Extra Large. Simplicity 8855 is the women's pattern with a blouse, long skirt and overskirt, lace up front vest, shawl and tam. Sizes are 6 through 20. Patterns are normally $11.95 and $12.95, but many fabric stores have the patterns on sale during the pre-Christmas sales, I bought my patterns for 99 cents each. Now if we only knew for sure what tartan to use.......Best wishes, Pat Jorgensen
