Dear Patricia: Please go ahead and post last year's earliest ancestor submission again this year. Unfortunately, I have not learned anything new about John Laird, the spouse of Lydia Wright in Washington County. PA, married in the 1790s in that county. [Two of their daughters, Charity and Jane married Van Wye brothers and between the two marriages produced 26 Van Wye grandchildren for John and Lydia] I have found a little more info on the Wright family this past year, but so far nothing on John's Laird family of origin. Hello LFA members and friends, I hope that each of you have had a chance to download the December issue of "Laird Branches." If not, the file can be found under newsletter at the following URL: http://www.qcsi.net/lfa The Laird Family Association has grown to 131 members. However I have only heard from a few of you regarding submission of your earliest known Laird ancestor for the January issue of "Laird Branches." Since this Special Edition is only published once a year, it allows each of us the opportunity to post our brick wall so that others may see, and possibly find a connection to YOUR family. The importance of this edition of the newsletter cannot be over emphasized, nor should it be overlooked as an important genealogical resource for the Laird researcher. So please support the Laird Family Association by submitting your earliest known Laird ancestor as soon as possible. Since my task will only be to copy and paste the information into a sensible format, the newsletter should be ready for posting on the LFA website as soon as I hear from each of you. If you would like me to post last years submission, then please send me a note requesting that I do so. If you are not sure if you are a member of the Laird Family Association, then please contact our Membership Chairpersons (Robert and Carolyn Laird, LALAIRD@compuserve.com). Robert and Carolyn Laird will be pleased to add your name to the membership list. Remember, the true purpose and goal of the Laird Family Association is to help unite Laird researchers throughout the world into one large family. The true purpose of the newsletter is to gather genealogical information from around the globe into one central location, for the help and benefit of all Laird researchers. Please send your submissions to Patricia Laird Howard @ plhoward@aol.com Sincerely, Patricia Laird Howard LFA Newsletter Editor

My gg grandfather was Laird Henderson born in PA. He died between 1847 - 1849. He married Mary Garretson. I cannot find any information on him. I am writing to your list because I thought maybe Laird's mother's maiden name was Laird. Thank you Penny

For those of us who have been researching the Lodowick Laird line, I may have come across a possible clue to his father's name. - ---------------------------------------------------- From: The History of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania (I copied this some years ago and didn't have the sense to write down the complete source information-CL). p. 16-17 "The emigration began prior to 1718, although few in number and in illustration of the commencement of Scotch-Irish settlement in America, we give herewith the 'Memorial to Governor Shute, of Massachusetts, from residents in the north of Ireland." The memorial is important to us, from the fact that the great majority of the signers subsequently found homes in Paxtang, Hanover, and Derry" (counties in PA). "To His Excellency, the Right Honorable Collonel Samuel Shute, Governour of New England. We, whose names are underwritten, Inhabitants of ye North of Ireland, Doe in our own names, and in the names of many others our Neighbours, Gentlemen, Ministers, Farmers, and Tradesmen, Commissionate and appoint our trusty and well-beloved Friend, the Reverend Mr. William Boyd of Macasky, to His Excellency the Right Honorable Collonel Samuel Shuitte, Governour of New England, and to assure His Excellency of our sincere and hearty Inclination to Transport ourselves to that very excellent and renowned Plantation, upon our obtaining from His Excellency suitable encouragement; and further, to act and Doe in our names as his Prudence shall direct. Given under our hands this 26th day of march, Anno Dom. 1718." The document then contains 310 names of those who signed the Memorial. Among these names is WILLIAM LAIRD. Another name on this list is MATTHEW LORD, however, my research indicates that Matthew is not a name that was passed down through our particular Laird families, while William is. Could this William be Lodowick's father? What do you think? For those who may have other Scotch-Irish names they are researching, I would be glad to do look-ups. Please e-mail look-up requests to me at LALAIRD@compuserve.com I have also posted the above to the Scotch-Irish List. Regards, Carolyn Laird
The December issue of the Laird Family Association newsletter is finally finished and has been sent to Robert for posting on the LFA Web Site. The file was sent to him late this evening, so please allow Robert a generous amount of time to get the file posted to the web site. Robert usually posts to the list after he has it ready to download. The LFA URL is http://www.qcsi.net/lfa Sincerely, Patricia Laird Howard

Hello, I wonder if we might have a connection? I have James LAIRD born 1831 in Winnyhaw, Raphoe, Donegal Ireland. Your query interests me greatly because of the middle name JAMESON. My James' parents were Roulston LAIRD and Elizabeth(Betty) JAMESON. I have no specific information on Roulston LAIRD or Betty JAMESON other than they were Presbyterian and having children between 1825-1833 in Raphoe. I have some indications that Betty JAMESON may have been born in Scotland. Other children besides James that I know of include: Ralston LAIRD--born 1825-30 Samuel LAIRD--born 1825-30 Catherine LAIRD--born 1833 Ralston, Samuel, and James all came over to the US in the 1850's and settled in Philadelphia then Burlington and Camden Counties, NJ. James' daughter, my great grandmother was Elizabeth Rena Veronica Jameson Laird. >From the records I have looked at, the heaviest concentration of Lairds in Ireland seems to be in Donegal. Kathy Karn
John Gould, In your reference to John Laird and wife Agnes Black: "I have thought that James LAIRD might have stemmed from the family of John LAIRD of Derry, Lancaster, Pa., who married Agnes BLACK in 1741 and mentioned Hugh, John, Mary, Samuel, William, James and Jane in his will of 1777, but I have not been able to prove it." The Bible record of John Laird and Agnes Black lists their marriage as 17 August 1738, and mentions a son named James Laird, born on the 21 November 1744. The children of John and Agnes Laird are as follows: 1. Hugh Laird, born 21 June 1742, married Mary. (My line) 2. James Laird born 21 Nov 1744, married Margaret. 3. Elizabeth Laird born 16 March 1748, married Matthew McKinney. 4. Mary Laird, born 8 February 1750, married Andrew Biggar. 5. Jane Laird, born 12 October 1752, married James Parkhill. 6. John Laird, born 13 March 1755. 7. Samuel Laird, born 13 November 1759. 8. William Laird, born 1 March 1762, married Elizabeth Crawford. LFA NEWSLETTER. Also, I would like to mention that I have been very busy with the marriage of my eldest son which took place on the 21st of January. Hopefully life will now get back to normal, and I will concentrate on having the LFA newsletters ready for posting this weekend. Sincerely, Patricia Laird Howard
The John Laird in our ancestry married Lydia Wright in the 1790s. They married and lived in Peters Township, Washington County, PA. Two of their daughters, Charity Laird and Jane Laird married two Van Wye brothers. Charity Laird and Abram Van Wye [both born in Washington County in late 1790s] moved to Trumbull County, in the area of modern Niles, Ohio after they married [around 1817] part time in 1820s and permanently in 1834; as did Jane Laird and her husband James Van Wye [both born in Washington County in early 1800s, married there 1822]. [Their Uncle Charles Van Wye, who came to Washington Co., PA in 1793-4, married Jane Cameron there around 1800 + or minus, started clearing land in Trumbull County sometime after 1806 but kept his "official" residence in Washington County until around 1820, when he and most of his children permanently settled along the Mahoning River, south of Warren - seems they commuted back and forth between the two]. I have so far not been able to identify this John Laird's family of origin. The info I have had came from Van Wye and Wright records so it may well be lacking in the details on the Lairds. For the past 15 years I have been under the impression that Lydia and John Laird only had daughters, however recently, a fellow researcher has provided info that indicates they may have had male offspring as well. Any insight and leads are welcome. The recent post about James Laird in similar locations in the right time frame, with a possible brother named John, has me intrigued. Perhaps this brick wall I've faced on our John Laird will crumble yet. Gail Van Wye
Dear Heather Thanks for your message. The best place to go is the website I listed www.robertburns.org - it is now live - and this has links to other sites that will tell you a great deal about Scotland. You could also try my website http://ourworld.cs.com/INSLaird/ where I have listed a number of websites that you can click on for more information on things Scots, not least the "Gateway to Scotland" at the bottom of the page. The Thistle is the emblem of Scotland as it warned of the arrival of Viking raiders in the 11th Century. Scotland was part of the Kingdom of Norway down to Perth, and the Norse were keen to take in more territory. They were advancing barefoot on Perth having rowed up the river and but leader trod on a thistle and cried out, thereby warning the Scots and therefore preserving the Kingdom. The Thistle has its motto "Nemo me impune lacessit" - "No-one hurts me with impunity!" Yours aye Iain
I received this email from Paul Gould, he is trying to find his family of LAIRDS. Does anyone on this list recognize his line and could perhaps help him. Please respond to Paul or to Tena McDowell Hanna. Subject: {not a subscriber} James LAIRD Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2000 09:14:52 -0800 (PST) From: "John Gould" <jogould@erols.com> For Tena McDowell Hanna: I was taken by surprise by the citation of a letter to me from John Fralish. This letter was written at least fifteen years ago, at a time when I was attempting to trace my Laird ancestors. I eventually gave up that task. I couldn't find my way through the limited supply of given names. Your message has made me want to take up the search again. If you have information you think could help me in this, I would appreciate learning of it. The person whose parents and ancestors I'm trying to identify is James LAIRD (1764-1826), who came to Mesopotamia, Trumbull, O., from Peters, Washington, Pa., in 1811. James was in Peters by 1780 (from tax lists). He died in Mesopotamia. Mespotamia histories say that James LAIRD was a veteran of the War of the Revolution. I have doubted this because it has seemed to me he was too young for such service. However, both a private and a lieutenant James LAIRD are listed as having served in the 1st Battalion of the Cumberland Co. Militia (Virgil White, Index to Revolutionary War Service Records). James LAIRD of Washington County married Elizabeth, daughter of Josiah and Margaret (MORRISON) CRAWFORD. The children of James and Elizabeth (CRAWFORD) LAIRD were Josiah (1789), Rachel (1790), John (1792), Matthew (1794), Andrew (1796), Margaret (1798), Elizabeth ( ), Mary (1804), James (1807) and William (1809). Josiah CRAWFORD was in Strabane, Washington Co., in 1800 (also from tax lists). Strabane adjoined Peters. I have tentatively traced Josiah's family to East Nottingham, Chester, Pa. I have thought that James LAIRD might have stemmed from the family of John LAIRD of Derry, Lancaster, Pa., who married Agnes BLACK in 1741 and mentioned Hugh, John, Mary, Samuel, William, James and Jane in his will of 1777, but I have not been able to prove it. There is another tentative tie of James LAIRD (1764-1826) to Cumberland County besides the possible Revolutionary War service cited above: A Trumbull County history states that after the death of her husband Seth Morrison in 1823, Rachel (Laird) Morrison, eldest daughter of James LAIRD of Mesopotamia, went on horseback to Carlisle to settle family matters. I have assumed the family matters were those of the Morrisons. There is a possibility they refer to the Lairds instead. A last note: Abigail, daughter of Matthew LAIRD and granddaughter of James Laird of Mesopotamia, married an unidentified YOUNG. John Gould
Iain; That is marvelous news. We have attended a "Robbie Burns" night the last few years. Since we are not really Scots folk we go in company of some. The haggis ceremonies and a super meal, followed by recitations, songs and skits are just wonderful. One of the group has played the part of the Bard for many years. Thank you for giving us the notice of the new site. Daphne N. Dear Cousins I thought you might like to know that new website (created by Scotweb) will be launched on Burns' Night (Tuesday 25th January) next week and will be found at www.robertburns.org - it will have 2,000 Scots words translated to English, French and German and 560 of the Scots Bard's poems and songs. I hope it will help with the many clelebrations that are sure to be taking place in Laird households across the world in the next few days! Yours aye Iain
