Hi Sue, Martha Blair is mentioned in the will of John Leard of Cumberland Township, York (now Adams) County. will book B page 54 written May 20, 1766 John mentions his wife Martha, daughters Martha Blair and Mary Neelson, and sons John, William and Robert Jay Laird
Just to really muddy already dark waters, but also , perhaps, to send some of you in a completely different direction in "translation" raher than "spelling" I humbly offer the following "food for thought": the Irish Gaelic for the the family name 'Laird' has been known to be translated to Mac an Tiarna (teer; tear; tearr; tearre; and so on.) Thus we now have the common name Macateer, Macteer, Mactierny, and even the the dropping of the prefix Mac to become Tierney (as in Gene ?) and sundry variations. The "mac" means 'son, "an"(for this purpose means 'of' and Tiarna means landlord, which of course is the old common meaning of "the Laird" traditionally. The head scratching begins when one wonders if ANY of the original Laird settlers, especially in the N of Ireland, changed their names into the then native language (you already know the story of how some settlers became more Irish than the Irish themselves), or, if , (and I put this forward to play devil's advocate here), some of the original Tierneys, Macteers and so on, "anglicized" their names to the English (Scottish) equivalent, in order to bypass some of the Penal Laws still in force before 1829 in Ireland, under which same laws 'native' families were penalized to an extraordinary degree. Thus, it might be possible, if one were researching Lairds in Ireland, and if one were to come across an insurmountable barrier, to make a "lateral leap" and compare the first, or Christian, names if there are contemporary records of Mactirs, Tierneys (and variations). While the barrier may still remain in most cases, the search for that most elusive needle-in-the-haystack can at least be extended. If there are some strong corollaries, then one can at least proceed to the next stage of examining land titles, wills, geographical locations, townlands and so on. I realise that this suggestion may be anathema to some purists, but we all know the extent to which names were changed to become more "socially acceptable" at different periods in the histories of various cultures. Anyway, I throw this slight offering into the brew and trust that it might indeed pique someone's interest, and provide additional fodder, on which we shouldn't gag, but with which the flagging genealogical scholar might renew some strength to KEEP GOING!! Are you insinuating that we just might be Irish? How about all the years we have researched Scotland, Ian what about this?

We have discussed all the ways the real name could be spelled. I may have mentioned this in the past, but since we have a lot of new people on the list it may be worth mentioning again. When searching indexes, be aware of the kinds of mistakes the person making the index might make. For example, I have found the name Lard indexed as Sard, Sand, Lord, Land. Horatio Nelson Lard is in 1860 Indiana Census Index as Horation Nelson Land.

Patricia, I would like to *thank you* for all your hard work and patience! I appreciate having someplace to come and search for living relatives that can help me find my ancestors. And maybe, I can find some Laird info in this part of the country that will help someone else. Sincerely, Sherry

I am sure that your Samuel and my James were very close. Geographically and personnally. I agree with you on the LDS web site, I have used it, but have spent almost two years at the LDS family history center in NE Sacramento. It is slow going. My uncle on my mother's side of our family was in the Mormon church (is no longer), and when he was there he submitted his tree for their family (LYKE) several times, each time they rejected it and asked him to correct items. He finally gave up on his family tree project after many years of research and rejection. He is actually quite mad about it still, even though he is not a Mormon now. I have worked extensively on that part of my tree, they lived in upstate New York and thebirths and death records are no where to be found for this family. I am back to the late 1700 and have all but one birth record. Thank you for your kind offer. Tena M. The newsletter has been sent to Robert for posting on the web site. I would like to thank all of you for your patience. Sincerely, Patricia
Tena, Thank you for the revised edition. I will get it into the newsletter and send to Robert. Just remember you are not the only one that has been confused about the early Lairds. I have seen Samuel Laird who married Mary Young, and Capt William Laird who married Martha Wilson named as the children of my ancestor John Laird who married Agnes Black. I have seen my ancestor Hugh Laird of York County, son of John and Agnes Black confused with Hugh Laird of Cumberland. The problem seems to be the repeat of names (Hugh, Samuel, Matthew, etc.), with few birthdates. Without the use of wills, deeds, warrants, patents, tax records, orphan court dockets, etc., it makes it very difficult to see the complete picture. To come to a conclusion without documentation only creates chaos. I wish you continued success in your research, and I compliment you for hanging in there. Jay and I will work on clearing up any questions you may have on the emigrant family, and place the information in the next newsletter. Sincerely, Patricia Laird Howard Sincerely, Patricia
Tena; I suppose you have looked in the records of the First Dutch Reform Churches in NY, just on the off chance that some ancestors might be there. Many of my Clark ancestors (TRUAX my mother's lines) were there, even though some were English and/or Welsh. They seem to have quite a few "married -ins". Hello to all; Martha Laird b. about 1732 in Ireland d. April 1803 in TN, m. John "The Pioneer" Blair Jan. 5, 1754. They had 8 children: William b. 1762 m.Dunham; John b. 1754 m.Kelsey; Ann b. 1758 m. McLin; Joseph b. 1770 m. McConaughy; Richard b. 1772 m. McConaghy; Brice b. 1772 m. McLeary; Robert b.1779; and Martha b. 1781. Any information on the Laird or Blair lines would be a great help. I'm always willing to share. Thanks for any help. Sue K.

Hi Patricia: I am enclosing a copy of our genealogy from Hugh and Anna Laird to about three generations. This eliminates the areas in question. In reference to my posting to the Cumberland County list, I think the topic was the Young family, my source for the genealogy information was Pennsylvania Genealogies, Author: William Henry Egle, Call Number: R929.1 E31, page 213 (See below), but the comments about the wills were from your newsletter, I posted your note so that the list would be aware of the possible problem with this record) The Rev. Mr. Montgomery was twice married; m., first, in 1765, ELIZABETH REED, d. March, 1769, daughter of Andrew and Sarah Reed, of Trenton, N. J., and they had issue: ii. Elizabeth, b. July 17, 1768; d. October 12, 1814, in Harrisburg, Pa.; m. Samuel Laird, b. at Carlisle, Pa., 15th February, 1769, son of Samuel Laird (1732-1806) and Mary Young, (1741-1833,) daughter of James Young. His father was for many years one of the provincial magistrates of Cumberland county, and, under the Constitution of 1776, one of the justices of the courts. Mr. Laird received a classical education, studied law at Carlisle, and was admitted to the Dauphin county bar at the September term, 1792. He located at Harrisburg, and soon secured a large and successful practice. In the early years of the borough he took an active part in its local affairs, and was a prominent actor in the first decade of its history. He died at Harrisburg, Pa., January 15, 1815. Pat here is the revised, revised copy of my genealogy report starting with Hugh Laird. I do have a problem with the birth date of Hugh being before 1737, My James was born in 1753, usually there is a 20 - 25 gap between generations. The date 1736 would be about right for Hugh to be the father of my James???? But...Williams deposition states that his father sent Hugh Laird, a son up to the Swatara. This was dated 1737. Lets suppose Hugh was 18 - in 1737, that would make him 34 or 36 when James was born. Not impossible, but it does put a question in my mind. Where can I write for a copy of the disposition of William Laird? This seems to be a critical document. Sorry about the date errors, they are purged for right now. I most certainly am looking forward to your article on this line. hope this hasn't held you back too much. Tena McDowell Hanna Descendants of Hugh Laird Generation No. 1 1. Tena; Sounds to me like you have done your homework better than most. Perhaps someone will be able to help you track down the source of the apparent error. Hi Paul: I would appreciate the information that you have on Samuel Laird. Tena M.
