    1. [LADESOTO-L] johniken surname
    2. Hello, I have started an email list for the surname JOHNIKEN, JOHNICAN, JONICAN, JOHNIGAN, JONIGAN, JOURNIGAN and any other name that may have a similar pronunciation. I know a lot of other families intermarried or other ways mingled with them in DeSoto/Sabine Parish. The list is not intended to replace any other list, especially JERNIGAN-L@ROOTSWEB.COM. However, I know some variations of the JOHNIKEN surname have existed with the independent spelling for at least 150 - 200 years. The purpose of the new list is to identify the origins of this name, with its myriad spellings. Some of these families may be related, even when the name is spelled different, but it is MORE likely that illiteracy and regional dialects caused the name to evolve in separate times and places. I want to identify the times and places and limit posting to events and people that existed at the time or came after the spelling of the name was standardized. Please share what you know with the rest of us. I do not expect JOHNIKEN-L to have many subscribers because there are not many people who use and research the name. I also believe the name evolved independently in SC, MS, and very likely in other places. The most likely root for that surname is JERNIGAN or JURNIGAN but there may be more. Let's compare notes. If you are a JOHNIKEN researcher, or if you think a branch of your family diverged from another surname and may have a pronunciation similar to JOHNIKEN you can subscribe by sending a blank email to JOHNIKEN-L-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM with the word subscribe in the Subject Line. 1. [LADESOTO-L] Pleasant Hill
    2. Jerry Linney
    3. I have a question for those of you familiar with the Pelican and Pleasant Hill areas. I have finally found the death information on my g-g-grandmother that I have been looking for, for more than a year. This past July I located her resting place at Zions Rest Cemetery in the community of Wallace in Pelican. Unfortunately, it was only marked with an old brick and the paint was fading away. Now that I have her death information I plan to have a new headstone placed there. Now for my question - on her death certificate it says she lived in Pleasant Hill for the last 1 year prior to her death in March 1916. I know from the 1910 Fed Census that she was living with her son as a widow in Pelican. In 1910 she was 55 years old. Does anyone know if there is some place that she might have lived in a retirement type home in Pleasant Hill in 1915-1916...or is that a silly question and no such thing existed like that during that time period? Her name was Anna B. (Kerlin) Mat(t)hews, born in 1955 in Georgia. Married Robert Walker Mathews in 1878 in Lisbon, Claiborne Parish. Their son Samuel Mathews and wife Cordelia Cook-Mathews lived in Pelican from about 1906 until they died. Samuel died in 1969 and Cordelia in 1971. Did anyone know this family? Their house was on highway 177 next door to Mrs. Hinkey (spelling??). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Yes, I'm Linda's sister...in fact i told her about seeing one of your queries on the Desoto site & gave her your email address, she enjoyed hearing from you. I havent seen Austin Smith's site about the schools, but would love to. Please send me his site address. Linda has a picture of Lula School with her class in front, and we are just curious about the building, when it was built & if it was originally built for a school. Thought i had heard some wealthy man built it for his daughter named Lula & it was later donated for the school, (may have been something i dreamed)! It was really a pretty impressive structure for that little community, hated that it was torn down. Thanks for your response!! I work on our Genealogy & the internet has really been wonderful for that!! Thanks, Julia
