    1. [LADESOTO-L] Hope it's OK to send this to the lists/since it is Valentine's Day/History
    2.    Grandpa's Valentine                  By Elaine Reese      I was the only family member living close by, so I received the initial call from the nursing home.  Grandpa was failing rapidly.  I should come.  There was nothing to do but hold his hand.  "I love you, Grandpa.  Thank you for always being there for me."  And silently, I released him.      Memories...memories...six days a week, the farmer in the old blue shirt and bib overalls caring for those Hereford cattle he loved so much...on hot summer days lifting bales of hay from the wagon, plowing the soil, planting the corn and beans and harvesting them in the fall...always working from dawn to dusk.  Survival demanded the work, work, work.      But on Sundays, after the morning chores were done, he put on his gray suit and hat.  Grandma wore her wine- colored dress and the ivory beads, and they went to church.  There was little other social life.  Grandpa and Grandma were quiet, peaceful, unemotional people who every day did what they had to do.  He was my grandpa - he had been for 35 years.  It was hard to picture him in any other role.      The nurse apologized for having to ask me so soon to please remove Grandpa's things from the room.  It would not take long.  There wasn't much.  Then I found it in the top drawer of his nightstand.  It looked like a very old handmade valentine.  What must have been red paper at one time was a streaked faded pink.  A piece of white paper had been glued to the center of the heart.  On it, penned in Grandma's handwriting, were these words:                  ===================                  TO LEE FROM HARRIET                   With All My Love                   February 14, 1895      Are you alive?  Real?  Or are you the most beautiful dream that I have had in years?  Are you an angel - or a figment of my imagination?  Someone I fabricated to fill the void?  To soothe the pain?  Where did you find the time to listen?  How could you understand?      You made me laugh when my heart was crying.  You took me dancing when I couldn't take a step.  You helped me set new goals when I was dying.  You showed me dew drops and I had diamonds.  You brought me wildflowers and I had orchids.  You sang to me and angelic choirs burst forth in song.  You held my hand and my whole being loved you.  You gave me a ring and I belonged to you.  I belonged to you and I have experienced all.                  ===================      Tears streamed down my cheeks as I read the words.  I pictured the old couple I had always known.  It's difficult to imagine your grandparents in any role other than that.  What I read was so very beautiful and sacred.  Grandpa had kept it all those years.  Now it is framed on my dresser, a treasured part of family history.

The name is "Susannah Phieters." Source:Kennth L. Malone (Kenneth Malone's e-mail address: <Klmalone@aol.com> However, I find that upon this inquiry the maiden name for Rose is given as "Stover." The Headrick's came to Georgia from North Carolina and the elder Caspar Headrick (1765-1837)had draws in the Georgia Gold Lottery of 1834(in old age). A marriage record of Sharlotte Headrick Dozier (1818-1904) says that her father was Caspar Headrick and her mother, Mary Margaret Fischer (they married in Augusta County, Virginia in 1793). My gggrandfather John Headrick and Caspar were probably the only heads of Headrick (Hedrick) households in Lumpkin,Habersham, or Union Counties Georgia at that time. I'll try to do more research.

I have thought they were all related but was not sure. I have information on George and his brother Casper. Also had information on Capt. Peter Headrick. My missing link was the father Casper Headrick although I had thought he would be the father. The only extra child I have for Casper (the father) is Frank. Do you also have him? Would love share any information with you. Thank you so much for your response and the women's last maiden names. If any one has Susannah's maiden name that married Casper (the son) I would appreciate them sending it.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/CEB.2ACI/360.386.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Bob Sewell, I responded to a query by Ruby Newell. My paternal gggrandfather was a John Headrick (1794---95? ?) who came from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia (lived in Union County, Georgia from 1832-1840?). His father was a Caspar Headrick (1762-1837, died in Lumpkin County, Georgia and was born supposedly in Rowan County, North carolina and son of the famed Revolutionary of German descent, Capt. Peter Hedrick). Well, my gggrandfather, John Headrick had a brother Caspar who was listed in the Hall County, Georgia census of 1830 as a "barrelmaker." I don't find him on the 1840 census. He apparently married a Susannah ? (I have her maiden name from the Internet but have misplaced it). He had a younger brother, George Headrick (Hedrick) who married a Rose Ann Martin. The brother of Rose Ann, John Martin, in turned married Mary Hedrick (1808? ?), sister of Caspar and my John Hedrick. My John Hedrick, his brother-in-law John Martin, Rose's brother, aided in the Cherokee Indian Removal from Union County, Georgia, 1838-39 (no personal pride in that fact). My John was married to a Nanc! y? (died after 1870) and they next appear on the 1850 census of Hickman County, Kentucky, and then they moved to Cape Girardeau, Co. Missouri, and then to Cane Creek, Butler County, Missoui. I suspicioned that the Caspar Headrick in Panola County, Texas was John's brother. If they were brothers they also had a sister, Sharlotte Headrick (1818-1904) who married a Dozier Sutton and lived most of her life in Hot Springs, Arkansas. I received some papers from there recently. If I can be of further help please let me know. I live in Ellington, Mo. (address: Warner Conder, P.O. Box 773, Ellington, Mo. 63638) Phone: (573) 663-2257 THANKS!
