    3. Posted on: DeSoto Parish La Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/La/DeSoto/672 Surname: DUBOIS, GREENING, WILLIAMS ------------------------- Re. <<I am searching for J. Lud Williams desendants. J. Lud Williams was my GGfather's brother. He was an enumerator in the 1900 census in Mansfield. I'm told that he was Supt. of Parish schools, or another public office. He had brothers named W. Reid Williams, Hundl(e)y Williams, and Lon Willliams. Need to know where he was born, and hopefully, who his parents were. THANKS>> J. Lud Williams was either a grandson or great-grandson of Josiah & Judith (Elmore) Williams of VA, SC & AL. See the url below for more information on their family (J. Lud Williams is discussed among the "mystery" Williams). Hundley was used as given name especially among the descendants of their son Josiah H(undley?) Williams. J. Lud Williams was among the seven prospective tutorship committee members named in the petition submitted Dec. 1877 by attornies for the minor children of Dr. S.P. DuBois. They were related to him through their paternal grandmother, Louisa (Williams) DuBois. The actual minutes of the committee meeting were signed by a Josiah L. Williams (of which there were at the very least two - related - in DeSoto Parish at the time). Lud Williams is enumerated (age 24, born LA) in the 1870 DeSoto Parish census, along with Charlie Williams (age 18, born LA) in the HH of Antoinette Huitt[sic], widow with three Huitt[Hewitt] sons in same HH. He may be the Ludlow Williams (age 15, born LA) enumerated Smith cty., TX 1860 in the HH of Sarah Williams, widow of Louisa Williams DuBois' brother Warner, who lived in DeSoto Par. 1850-56. He was *not* a son of Warner Williams', however. Other Williams enumerated in that HH who were not chn of Warner & Sarah were Charles (age 9, born LA) and Alfred (age 13, born LA). J. Lud Williams' occupation was given as "Debt Tax Coll." in the 1870 census. In 1874 J.L. and and A.R. Williams were named special auditors to investigate the accounts of a former Parish tax collector. J. Lud Williams married Emma Temperance Wimbish 08 Jan 1874 (DeSoto Marr Vol 2, p.588). There is a Lud WILLIAMS born Nov. 26, 1889, died Dec. 1917 buried at Gravel Point Cath. Church Cem. DeSoto Parish. Preliminary research seems to indicate that he was unrelated to J. Lud Williams, but that reflects only unreferenced, secondary sources, so far. According to the WWI Draft Registrations, he was working for J(ames) T(homas) Guy, married and had two children when he registered. I'd appreciate any additional information on him. Director Eileen Nabors & staff members Eleah Gamble & Billie Chadwick have an encyclopedic knowledge of DeSoto Parish history. Many items of historic interest may be seen there, and publications of the DeSoto Historical Society are available for purchase. (Tel. number, etc. at the top of the DeSoto Parish main page.) State and local holidays vary and may affect openings, so it's always wise to call in advance. Rgds., Judy

Posted on: DeSoto Parish La Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/La/DeSoto/661 Surname: DUBOIS, GREENING, WILLIAMS ------------------------- Ellen Catherine Clifton Williams 12 Sep 1860 - 15 Jul 1902 Josiah Laffitte "Pomp" Williams 1852 - 1919 Both bur. Carmel Cem. Josiah Laffitte Williams was the son of Thomas Jefferson Williams Sr. (1803-187?) and his 2nd wife (marr 17 Sep 1851 DeSoto Par.) Marie Celemine Laffitte (Oct 1823 - 13 Jan 1881, also bur. Carmel Cem.). Thos. J. Williams Sr. is said to be buried at the old Parson's Cem. Does anyone have any information as to where that is? Josiah marr a second time. Williams family members recall that his second wife went by the nickname "Doll". The following notation is from the old DeSoto Par. History by Slawson. "Simon DeSoto had five children, namely: Joe.. Marcelle.. Neville.. Simon.. Cheat (nick name) De Soto, who was my God-Mother [Mr. Slawson's?] and the mother of Babe, who was the first [sic] wife of the late J.L. (Pomp) Williams." To whom was "Cheat" DeSoto married, i.e. what was the last name (and real given name) of "Babe" Williams? Also is she the same person recalled by family members as "Doll", or does she represent another marriage of Josiah Laffitte Willaims? Any information appreciated.
