From: December 5, 1952 Winnfield News-American J. W. Crippen, 70, Prominent Local Citizen Succumbs Railroad Man and Masonic Leader Lived Here Since 1915 J. W. Crippen, 70, retired railroad man and well known Winnfield citizen, died in a local hospital Friday morning of last week following a lingering illness of several months. Born in Merryville, Louisiana, Mr. Crippen had lived in Texas until he came to Eros, Louisiana in 1914, moving one year later to Winnfield, where he has resided ever since. He was employed by the Tremont & Gulf Railway Company as conductor until he retired five years ago because of ailing health. Mr. Crippen was a member of the First Baptist Church, Eastern Star Lodge No. 15q, F. & A. M.; Palestine Chapter 55 O.E.S.; Winnfield Chapter No. 59, R. A. M.; Winnfield Commandery K. T., and a Shriner affiliated with the El Karubah Temple of Shreveport. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at three o'clock from the First Baptist Church conducted by Dr. W. L. Holcomb, pastor, assisted by Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Interment was in the Winnfield Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers funeral directors. Masonic rites at graveside by Eastern Star Lodge No. 151 F. & A. M. concluded the services. Pallbearers were fellow Knight Templars of the local commandery. Surviving him are two sons, J. J. Crippen of Winnfield and Melvin Crippen of Houston, Texas, the latter by a former marriage; a daughter, Juanita Lasyone of Winnfield; one brother, Frank Crippen of Winnfield, one sister, Mrs. F.
