Lewis, Arthur Cullen, of Amite, and superintendent of the public schools of Tangipahoa parish, was born at Lewiston, La., Sept. 1, 1881; son of G. D. Lewis, born Feb. 19, 1854, and of Leah Schillng Lewis, a native of Mount Herman, La. He was educated in the public schools of his parish, the high school of Magnolia, Miss.; the Mississippi college at Clinton, and University of the South, at Sewannee, Tenn. He was elected superintendent of the Tangipahoa parish public schools, Sept. 21, 1906, and is filling his second term. Mr. Lewis is a Presbyterian, and secretary of the Tangipahoa Sunday school. The democratic party has always received his support. Having at all times shown great interest in educational matters, Mr. Lewis is actively connected with all movements for the welfare and the improvement of the community in which he lives. He is a member of the executive committee, State Teachers' association, a Royal Arch Mason, member of Kenneth Commandery No. 9, Knights Templar; a Woodman of the World and a Knight of Pythias. Jan. 1, 1908, Mr. Lewis married Miss Ida C. Watson, daughter of John G. and Ida (Werlen) Watson, of Denmark.
