    2. LIVINGSTON, Edward - Orleans Parish, Louisiana Submitted by Beryl Browning USGenWeb NOTICE: Libraries and individual researchers may download this file for personal, non-commercial use only. Any other use requires written permission from the transcriber. Livingston, Edward, lawyer, statesman and diplomat, was born at Clermont, Columbia county, N.Y., May 26, 1764, a younger brother of Robert R. Livingston (q.v.). He was graduated at Princeton in 1781, then read law, and in 1785 began. practice in New York city. He was in Congress from 1795 to 1801, when he was appointed U. S. district attorney for the district of New York by President Jefferson, and subsequently he was elected mayor of New York city. In 1803, through the dishonesty of a clerk, Mr. Livingston became a defaulter to the national government. He resigned his official position, made an assignment of his property, and removed to Louisiana, which had just then been purchased by the United States. Beginning life anew as a New Orleans lawyer, he soon became one of the prominent figures in the new territory. He was on the committee to petition Congress to repeal the bill dividing the territory in 1804; became a regent of the University of Orleans in 1805; the same year was one of the founders of Christ church Episcopal), of which he served as one of the first vestrymen; framed a code of procedure for the Territory of Orleans that was in force for twenty years; and established a lucrative private practice. Some lands which he received in payment of a fee were claimed by the city and he became involved in tedious and expensive litigation. (See Batture Affair.) This litigation, and an accusation by Gen. Wilkinson charging Mr. Livingston with complicity with the Burr conspiracy, caused an estrangement between him and President Jefferson, who attacked Livingston in a message to Congress on March 7, 1808, and also in a pamphlet, to which Mr. Livingston made a spirited reply. He was a member of the code commission of 1808; served on the committee of public defense in 1814; was an aide'to Gen. Jackson at the battle of New Orleans, and was honorably mentioned in Jackson's r6port. In 1820 he was elected to the Louisiana legislature and was one of the committee to prepare the address to Gov. Villere at the close of his term. In 1822 he was elected to the lower house of Congress and remained in that body until 1829, when he was elected to the senate. In connection with Moreau Lislet he prepared a civil code of Louisiana in 1823-24, and in 1826 was able to discharge his debt to the United States caused by the defalcation in 1803. In the spring of 1831 he succeeded Martin Van Buren as secretary of- state in the cabinet of President Jackson, and two years later was made minister to France. While in Paris he became a member of the Academy. Mr. Livingston died near Rhinebeck, N. Y., May 23, 1836, leaving an international reputation as a lawyer. PIERRE ETIENNE LEBOURGEOIS Pierre was born on the twentieth of August 1787 and baptised in New Orleans at the Cathedral of St. Louis on the ninth of September 1789. He was the son of Pierre LeBourgeois, a native of Caen in Normandy, France and Marie Margarita Reine, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. In the Battle of New Orleans in 1812 Pierre is listed as a First Lieutenant. Pierre married in St. James Parish, La. the 26th of December 1825, Artimise Matherne, daughter of Pierre Matherne and Celestine Fontenot. A few years later he negotiated with John McDonough, who was a neighbor in St. James Parish, to buy a tract of land on the Amite River. This property was the site of a Spanish Fort. It was also known as the Benjamin Key headright. There right on the banks of the river, was a stone-house, where Pierre and Artimise lived. It was known as the old LeBourgeois Place. After the Civil War, a new farm house was built about a quarter of mile inland from the stone-house, the new house was given the name "Whitehall". No death dates have been found for Pierre and Artimise, however on this property there is a small family cemetery and I would like to believe they are buried there. In the 1850 Census of Livingston Parish the family of Pierre LeBourgeois and Artimise is listed as follows: LeBourgeois, Pierre age 63 Artimise age 44 Aris age 21 Peter age 18 Louis age 14 Stephen age 10 Louisa age 11 On the following pages are translated copies of the correspondence between Pierre LeBourgeois and "The John McDonough". Pierre's letters were beautifully penned in French. McDonough's letters were in English and very hard to decipher. ********************************************************************************** Letter No. 1 St. James Parish, october 24, 1828 Mr. McDonough New Orleans Sir: Knowing that you own some lands along the Amite River, and intending to settle in that neighbor hood, I would like for you to do me the pleasure of letting me know if it were possible for you to sell me a portion which would be advanta- geous to me, either for cultivation or for some other purpose. As I recall having heard you say formerly, that the lot on which your sawmill is located, was advantageous to a man will- ing to work. Should you wish to sell this portion to me at a reasonable price and with reasonable conditions, perhaps I would be able to make arrangements with you. I think I should tell you that I am not rich, I dare flatter myself that you will have regard for my situation. In case these sawmill lands no longer belong to you, I will ask you to please give me the necessary information so that I may know to whom to address myself. Please have the complacency of answering my letter right away, and believe me to be With Consideration Sir: Your Very Humble And Obedient St. And Friend (signed) Pre LeBourgeois (On back: Mr. McDonough, New Orleans) ****************************************************************************** Letter No. 2 New Orleans, November 3, 1828 Mr. P. LeBorgeois (draft) Your favor of the 24th was this moment handed to me and as you requested I will reply. You inform me of your inten- tion to establish, on the River Amite and request to know whether I can sell you a tract of land in that District, and particular a tract where I formerly had a sawmill. To this I have observed that I will sell you a tract (with great pleasure) of valuable land, any where within my surveys, that you may select -- with the exception of a few tracks which I wish to reserve, but as I had two sawmills on that river, one propelled by steam, the other by water power -- I do not know which you referred to. The steam mill was near the lake, this tract I do not wish to sell, the other was high up on the Amite, above the mouth of the Comite. This situation with the improvement of land I will sell you, if it is what you wish. Not knowing what your particular object is, I cannot say which part of the country would suit you best. If your object is commerce the country above at this time is the place for a store. If your view is agriculture, the land below is best adapted as they are generally rich. The whole country from the Lake to Galvez is a rich body of land. Those lands are now cheap being worth from 4 to 5 cents the acre. Say 160 to 200 dollars for six (?) acres front by 40 arpents in depth. But in a very short time, will settle the country and make the land very valuable, as in a few months we will be established**. It has been in contestation for 25 years and has kept the country from settling. The conditions will be made (East of the river) and I will feel pleasured of being of service if it is in my power. The lumber business becoming a great object (in New Orleans). Two or 3 negroes even in making pine cord wood would make a great deal of money. It sells to the steam boats generally at 5 or 6 dollars for four cord and one half -- at times they cannot procure it. On the Tickfaw River there is a great deal of pine. I send you a rough sketch of the lines of my survey for your information. With Esteem and Regard Verfied Lot 12 JMcD P.S. Parish of St. Jacques I have tracts of lands in vaious situations on the side of the lake-- some of which perhaps might suit your object better than the Amite. **Reference to the establishment of Livingston Parish (Founded 1832) ******************************************************************************* St. James, November 18, 1828 Mr. McDonogh New Orleans My Dear Sir: This morning I had the honor of receiving yours of Nov. 3, in answer to mine of October 24th last. I am deeply grate- ful for the good offers you make me, and for the kindness you had in sending me expressions of your friendship. I did not know that you had two sawmills on the River Bank, one operated by steam which was located one league from Lake Maurepas. The other seemed to me, to be too far from the Capital. I had the occasion to travel through a good part of the Amite River, and the only place which could answer my purpose, would be the 1st where your steam operated sawmill was located. My wife (Artemise Matherne) who was raised in the country bordering on the Amite, is worrying me for a long time to make these ar- rangements with you. She wants to bring there her family, which is very numerous and very poor. It consists of first of all, her father (Piere Matherne), three or four brothers, as many sister, brothers-in-law and all of them have fathers and mothers of families of childrens. So that with from 5 to 6 slaves that I have, we will make a total of from 25 to 30 per- sons -- they are industrious people accustomed to field-work. I will use some to cultivate the ground, others to make cord wood, posts, shingles, stave-wood. Besides, we will have the facil- ities for many animals, such as cattle, hogs, sheep, chickens, and being near to New Orleans, by using a bark, we will be able to carry on a commerce which will enable us to pay you more readily. You are rich my dear Mr. McDonogh, you can easily do without this land, in the name of old friendship which existed between you and us, sell it to me, or sell me a portion of it. I promise you as an honest man, it is to facilitate the lives of these good people as it is for me. I will be at their head, you will have to deal only with me. I have the honor of being with consideration Sir Your very humble & obedient St. & friend (signed) Pre LeBourgeois Mr. John McDonogh New Orleans ************************************************************************** Letter No. 4 New Orleans, November 28, 1828 Mr. Piere LeBourgeois, (my draft) I have the pleasure to acknowledge the receipt of your esteemed favor of the 18th. In the contents of which I note and in reply have to observe that I have refused twenty times to sell to rich men the tract of land you wish to purchase of me and only then says I will, to a gentlemen with 50 slaves who wished to establish it as a sugar estate, but when you ask me to join you in the doing a good act (one that does you great honor) the objecting to make a dozen poor families com- fortable and happy, I confess I cannot refuse you. I will therefore do all I can for the poor community you are desirous of serving, and upon how you will become their father. I will sell you a part of the tract of land you wish where I had my steam mill fronting the Amite River so as to include a suffi- cient body for all your friends. When your time will admit, take your horse and come down, that I may converse and explain to you in person, as I write you in haste being much occupied. Present my respects to your venerable mother* and your lady**, and believe me to be in great regard and esteem, Your friend and well wisher, (signed) JMcD * Mother -- Marguerite Reine ** Lady (wife) -- Artemise Matherne

Goff, William D., a prominent member of the Arcadia bar, and a representative citizen of that community, was born Oct. 9, 1882; a son of Robert and Sarah C. (Davis) Goff, both of Bienville parish, where the father was engaged in farming. He is a descendant of an old and widely known family of North Carolina, his grandfather moving to Alabama in the colonial days, and later settling in Louisiana in 1840, where he conducted a mercantile business until his death in 1904. Of the 2 children in the family, the subject of this sketch is the older, and Carl, the younger brother, is a bookkeeper for a hardware concern in Arcadia. Mr. Goff secured his primary education in the schools of Bienville parish, and later studied law in the offices of the well-known firm of Barnette & Roberts. April 12, 1909, after 2 years of diligent study, he was admitted to the bar, and was immediately taken into partnership of what then became the law firm of Barnette, Roberts & Goff. He lived at Homer for a year, where the firm had an office, during which time he was mayor of the city. When Mr. Barnette was elected judge of the third judicial district, Mr. Goff returned to Arcadia, when the business changed its name to Roberts, Goff & Barnette, with offices at Arcadia and Shreveport, a brother of the judge being taken into the partnership. In 1913 Mr. Roberts removed to Shreveport, and the name of the firm was again changed, becoming Goff & Barnette. Mr. Goff is a staunch democrat in political adherency, a Blue Lodge Mason of lodge 126, of which he is Worshipful Master; Knight Templar of Monroe, Commandery No. 7, and a member of the Eastern Star, of Arcadia. He is a stockholder in the First National bank, and also of the Title Guarantee & Security Co., of Shreveport. May 20, 1906, was solemnized his marriage to Carrie, a daughter of Oliver P. and Julia (Weldon) Mitchell, of Lincoln parish, where the father has a large plantation. They are descendants of an old and distinguished family of that section of Louisiana. Mr. and Mrs. Goff are the parents of 3 children, namely: James Ralph, Louise and Mildred. A. and Mattie E. (Goff) Givens. The ancestors of both families lived in Alabama in the Colonial days. The father was a planter, and moved to Louisiana before he war, where he continued his occupation. At the outbreak of the war he promptly enlisted his services in the defense of the cause of the Confederacy, in the 12th Louisiana infantry. He served continuously for 3 years, taking part in many engagements, and was a brave and courageous soldier. Of the 7 children in the family, the subject of this review is the eldest, and received the elements of his education under his mother's careful instruction, and in a country school in the vicinity. He later continued his studies in the high school at Simsboro, where he remained for 2 years. After completing his education he turned his attention to agriculture, and farmed successfully for about 3 years. In 1899 he moved to Ruston and became a salesman in the general merchandise establishment of S. S. Gullatt & Bros., in which capacity he served for 4 years, after which he took a partner and went into business, under the firm name of Rinehart & Givens. They made many friends, and succeeded in establishing a lucrative business, in which Mr. Givens remained active for 5 years. In 1909 he became associated with Cargill Co., general merchandise, in which business he remained 3 years. In 1912 he was elected assessor, in which office he has served most efficiently ever since. Garrot, Robert Barbin, of Marksville, La., was born in that place March 2, 1895, and is a son of Leon and Florence (Barbin) Garrot, both of whom were born in Avoyelles parish. The paternal grandparents were S. and Eugenie (Mayeux) Garrot, and the former was a native of France. His wife was born in the same locality as was their son, Leon. The maternal grandfather, Ludger Barbin, married a lady whose maiden name was Goudeau. They were both of French ancestry. The maternal great-grandfather was sent to Louisiana by Louis XIV, to dispose of stores for the French government, at the time of the transfer of the Territory of Louisiana to the United States, and after completing the business connected with this mission, he located in Louisiana, and later married a Spanish lady. Ludger Barbin served in the Confederate army throughout the Civil war. Leon Garrot began business as a cotton planter on the family plantation, 3 miles from Marksville, which has been in the family several generations. After a few years, however, he accepted office as a deputy sheriff and continued in that capacity 11 years, when he engaged in mercantile business and conducted a general store about 5 years. Thereafter he occupied the office of deputy assessor of the parish 8 years, after which he resumed the business of growing cotton, as a main crop, on the family plantation. This plantation home, by the way, has an interesting history, and many stirring events of Civil war times took place in its immediate vicinity. Fort De Rousse, the defensive works of which are still to be seen on the banks of Red River, is on the Barbin plantation. There are 2 forts, in fact--a larger and a smaller one and both are at this time well preserved. Robert Barbin was the sixth of 11 children born to his parents, of which the following are now living: Angelica Ann, married and living in California; L. Percy received the degree of B. S. at Louisiana state university with the class of 1909, studied law at Harvard university during 1912-13, worked as a sugar chemist in Cuba for a time, with the intention of finishing his professional education at the Harvard law school; Louise; a graduate of the state normal, is now teaching at White Castle; Virginia, graduated from the local high school, later attended Louisiana State university and the state norinal, and is now teaching at Plaquemine; Robert Barbin, the subject of this sketch; Leonora C., is now attending high school at Marksville. Robert Barbin received his earlier education at the public schools of the locality in which he was born, graduating from the high school. He then attended the summer school of Louisiana State university, and during the succeeding school year filled the position of principal of a 3-teacher school in Ascension parish, since which time he has occupied the station of principal of Evergreen school in St. John the Baptist parish. Mr. Garrot affiliates with the democratic party and the Catholic church. Files may be printed or copied for personal use only. Fuller, Ned McGuire, M. D., well-known young physician of Bosco, is a son of Dr. John Nathaniel and Ida (Robinson) Fuller, and was born July 1, 1885, in Calhoun, Ouachita parish, La. The father was born Aug. 29, 1841, where Calhoun is now located, and practiced medicine there until his death, in 1893, having been killed by a runaway saddle-horse. He was in the Pelican Grays from Ouachita parish through the Civil war. He was in the siege of Vicksburg, was taken and held 1 year as prisoner, having several diseases of an infectious character. He was paroled at the close of the war and took up the practice of medicine. In reconstruction days he was very active and became captain of the Ku Klux Klan of the hill section of Ouachita parish. As a democrat he took a deep interest in politics, but was not an office holder. He was a member of the Masonic order, of the Knights of Pythias and the M. E. church, South. His wife was also a native of Ouachita parish, and bore him the following children: Lotta, now widow of J. M. Smith, of Port Arthur, Tex.; Addie, teacher in Alexandria high school; Mattie, now Mrs. R. H. Bennett, of Rob Roy, Ark.; Mande, now widow of Dr. E. L. Wright, of Bosco; John Newton, farmer, of Calhoun; Richard Robinson, mail carrier, of Calhoun, and Ned McGuire, the subject of this sketch. It is thus seen that Dr. Ned McGuire Fuller is the seventh and youngest child of his parents. He was reared at Calhoun, where he attended public school, and worked on a farm during vacations. Having finished the Calhoun high school at the age of 15, he entered the L. S. U. in his 18th year, spending 2 sessions there, and then went out of school for 2 years. He entered the medical department of Tulane university in 1907, and graduated in 1911, with the degree of M. D. Mathieu Brignac married a second time on November 7, 1793 at St. John the Baptist Church, Edgard, Louisiana, Marguerite Vickner, the widow of Lorenzo Gregoire Villique (Willief), (Vilic), and the daughter of Nicolas Vickner and Marie Apoline Elfer (Helfer). Mathieu became the stepfather of: 1. Scholastic Vilique 2. Felicite Vilique 3. Marguerite Vilique Mathieu and Marguerite Vickner then had the following children: A-1. Mathieu Jr. 2. Henry Simon 3. Marie Emilia 4. Marie Marguerite Magdelaine - called "Manon" 5. Celeste 6. Sylvain 7. Nicolas 8. Marie By the year of 1810 Mathieu Brignac moved his family to the Amite River colony and joined his brother Alexander Brignac who was living on Sectio 38 along Bayou Colyell and his brother-in-laws, Paul Guitrau and Joseph Lambert. An interesting document recorded in St. Helena Parish on the fourth day of July 1814 by the Judge Shepherd Brown of said parish gives us the follow- ing information on Mathieu Brignac and his brother-in-law Louis Lobell. "Know all men by these presents that we Shepherd Brown Judge being Shepherd Brown and John McDonough have bargained and sold to Mathieu Brignac a plantation or tract of land on the river Amit in the Parish of St. helena on which he at present resides containing five hundred arpents above the landing of Jacob Vauser (Fauser) at the upper line of a tract engaged by Paul Guidron (Guitreau) thense twelve arpents and one half in a north west line from whence and also from the commencement, running back in parallel lines a north east course forty arpents making the quantity as above mentioned of five hundred superficial arpents, the front of said tract to be the distance of five arpents in the swamp or between the edge of the high lands and the river on the lower line of adjoining Paul Guitrau and for and in consideration and in full payment of said tract of land we the said Shepherd Brown judge acknowledge to have received in hand of the said Matthew Brigniac the sum of two thousand dollars being the price agreed on between the parties. We have here to signed our names this twenty-second day of March 1811." Shepherd Brown, Judge Witness: Jean Louis Picou Francois Bonnet On the same day July 8, 1814 is recorded this sale of property: "Know all men by these presents that I Matthew Brigniac of the Parish of St. Helena in West Florida have this day for the sume of nine hundred and sicty dollars to me in hand paid and that receipt where of, I hereby acknowledge bargain, sold and delivered to Louis Loubel a tract or parcel of land containing two hundred and forty superficial arpents, being part of a tract of land of five hundred arpents purchased of Shepherd Brown, Judge on which I at present reside and bounded as follows, to wit commencing at the upper or north western line of my tract in front thence downriver along the front line a south east course six arpents from thence back a north east course forty arpents being bounded above by my upper line in its extent of forty arpents making the quantity as above of two hundred and forty arpents superficial and I the said Matthew Brigniac do hereby warrant and defend to him the said Louis Loubel his heirs and assigns the said tract of two hundred and forty superficial arpents against myself, my heirs and assigns forward (or forever). In witness whereof I have hereunto set my mark and caused my name to be written this twenty second day of March 1811." Matthew Brignac (his mark) Witnesses: Jean Louis Picou Francois Bonnet (his mark) This document establishes the move of Mathieu Brignac and Marguerite Vickner from St. James Parish, they are now residents of La Cote Francaise, in the parish of St. Helena. Their home was in section 41, several hundred feet from the present highway and in the rear of the present post office. Another document in St. Helena Parish Court House dated 10 July 1832, by the virtue of an order of the Court of Probate, State of Louisiana, the property of Mathieu Brignac and his deceased wife was exposed for sale. We now know that Marguerite is deceased. The inventory and appraisement listing the community property and also separate property, tells us that Marguerite was separated from Mathieu before her death. We have not been able to establish where Marguerite died or where she is buried. The 1840 Census of St. Helena Parish does not list a Mathieu Brignac. By this time Livingston had been established as a parish and probate records were being recorded in the parish court house. These public records were desroyed by a fire on October 14, 1875. Mathieu's death and the division of his estate we cannot establish. We can just say it went up in smoke.

Any other use requires written permission from the transcriber. >From the French Settlement Historical Register, published by the French Settlement Historical Society, French Settlement, Louisiana 70733. The LaGenWeb Archives thanks them for contributing this information. Vol. 2, December 1977 Henry Villar was born on the First German Coast (St. Charles Parish) around 1764. He was the second of six children born to his parents, Jacques Villar and Catherine Schnexaydre. Of these six, on ly three, Henry and two sisters, lived to reach adulthood. His father died when Henry was only sixteen years old and to him and his new brother-in-law of two months fell the responsibilies of the family. Like his father before him, Henry was the sole male survivor to carry the Villar name. On April 29, 1786 (1), at the age of twenty-three, Henry married Rosalie Vickner, the daughter of Nicolas Vickner and Apolonie Elfer (Helfer). Rosalie was also born on the First German Coast about 1768. The newlyweds resided on the Second German Coast (St. John the Baptist Parish). On August 12, 1788, upon reaching his majority, Henry received from his mother, the amount due him from his father's succession. (2) Sometime between the baptism of their third child in June of 1790 and the birth of their fifth child in May of 1792, Henry and Rosalie, along with her parents, moved from the banks of the Mississippi River into the District of Galveztown. At the time, this district was bounded on the north by the Tickfaw River, on the east by Lake Maurepas, on the south by the Amite River, and on the west by the District of St. Helena (about twenty miles from the confluence of the Amite and Comite Rivers) (3) and was served by the Spanish priest of St. Gabriel and St. Bernard Churches. Most probably, Galveztown on the westbank of the Amite River was also included in this district. Proof of this early move into the area is established by the baptism certificate of the couple's fifth child, Rosalie, on May 11, 1792. (4) The priest clearly states that the parents, natives of St. John the Baptist Parish, were now habitants of Galveztown. From this date until October of 1804, St. Gabriel Church records contain the baptisms of five more children born to Henry and Rosalie. (5) 1. St. John the Baptist Church, Edgard, La., 1st Book of Marriages, page 27 B. 2. St. John the Baptist Courthouse Records, Edgard, La., Doc. #31 of the year 1788. 3. Pintado Papers, Vol. IV, Register D. 4. St. Gabriel Church, St. Gabriel, La., Baptisms, Item 9, Page 19, Entry 73. 5. Note: To research these records, one must look for Villar spelled: Bilak, Bigner, Bilark, Bilar, Villard, etc. Likewise, Vickner will be found spelled: Wikner, Wizner, Bigner, etc. It is my belief that Henry Villar and his father-in-law, Nicholas Wichner (Vickner), were the first of the French and German families to leave the Mississippi River and move to La Cote (French Settlement) settling there among the few Spanish and Anglo-Saxon families. French Settlement was not included in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 and it wasn't until December 10, 1810 that the Florida Parishes, of which French Settlement was part, came under United States jurisdiction. At this time, land ownership had to be established. Each owner had to swear for one another that they lived on and cultivated their lands prior to 1810. Henry's land claim, Section 44 in French Settlement, totaled 332.43 acres. (6) Eleven known children were born to this couple. I have only been able to establish proof of four surviving childhood, three boys and a girl. At the age of forty-eight, Henry Villar died in St. James Parish on July 9, 1812 and was buried in that churches' cemetery the next day. The funeral record clearly states he was a resident of Galveztown. (7) His widow, Rosalie Vickner Villar, signed the marriage certificate of her son, Jean Louis, on April 27, 1820. (8) To date, this is the last known record I have been able to locate of her. Although the Villar name has now passed from French Settlement, Henry's sons and grandsons went on to settle new areas of Ascension Parish and in honor of one of them, Lake Villar received its name. 6. The LaGenWeb Archives thanks them for contributing this information. Vol. 1, December 1976 Submitted by Mercy Cambre Ambrose Heidel, progenitor of the "Haydel", "Aydell", "Aidel", and numerous other spellings, dates back to 1721 on the German Coast of Louisiana (St. John the Baptist Parish). Records show Ambroise as a native of Neukerchen, Germany. The departure from Lorient of German emigrants on four "Pest Ships" - Les Deux Freres - La Garonne - La Soconne - La Charente - was on January 24, 1721. On the passenger list of "La Charente" was Heidel - Widow Jean Adam and two children 1724 Census of the German Coast Ambros Heidel - Catholic - 22 years old - Baker His wife - his brother (18 years old) - his brother-in-law, cripple One and half years on place Good worker - very much at ease 1731 Census of the German Coast Ambros Heidel - wife and two children One engage' - Three negroes and two cows The younger brother is not mentioned and it is believed that he was killed in the Natchez Massacre in 1729. FIRST GENERATION Ambroise Heidel married Marguerite Schoff, issue of Jacob Schoff and Marianne _______. This was the beginning of many generations of Haydels in Louisiana. I will only give the direct line to the Aydell's who settled in French Settlement. Children on Ambroise Heidel and Marguerite Schoff 1. Regina b. 1723, m. Sebastien Fredric 2. Jean Jacque b. 1727, m. Cesaire Millet All of these records are found in St. John the Baptist and St. James Parishes. Mathais Haydel died 2 February 1800. Magdelaine died April 1776. THIRD GENERATION Antoine Haydel was one of the original settlers in this area, having settled and cultivated prior to 1810, 640 acres in Section 38, Township 8 South - Range 4 East, Greensburg District, La. I have records of eleven children of Antoine Haydel and Cesaire Millet. Cesaire Millet was the issue of Jean Millet and Catherine Mayer (Widow Tregre). Cesaire died in 1814 and records of her succession were found at the St. Helena Parish Courthouse. A second marriage between Antoine Haydel and Marie Eulalie Picou on 9 September 1820 is also recorded at the St. Helena parish Courthouse. A death certificate verfies that Antoine Haydel died and was buried in St. John the Baptist Parish in December 1843. Records of two children born of this marriage are also found at St. John the Baptist Parish, Edgard, La. Children of Antoine Haydel and Cesaire Millet 1. Antoine b. 1798, m. Euphrosine Webre 2. Carmelite b. 1813, died 1815 FOURTH GENERATION Drausin Hilaro (Hillaire) Haydel was the missing link that kept the chain broken until a birth certificate and succession was found. The older members of the family kept informing me that Antoine Haydel was the father of Hubert "Butch" Haydel. As you will see now, Antoine was the grandfather of Butch Haydel. Hillaire Haydel married Celeste Brignac, issue of Mathais Brignac and Marguerite Vicner, and had three children, one being born after the death of Hillaire about 1829. It is believed that Hillaire had a trading post on Blind River, died and was brought by boat to Port Vincent at night and buried there. I have found no death record of Hillaire so this story may well be so. Would like more information on this. Celeste Brignac's second marriage was to Jacque Vicnair and four children were born of this marriage. Celest Brignac died in 1896 and is buried in French Settlement. Children of Hillaire Haydel and Celeste Brignac 1. Alscide Hubert b. 1825, m. Polomie Poche 2. Eliza 3. Marie Odeliska b. 1829 (after Hillaire's death) FIFTH GENERATION Alscide Hubert Haydel, known as "Butch" Aydel, was really the one who started the spelling of Aydell as now spelled by all of us. He married Polomie Poche, daughter of Irene Berthelot and they had twelve children. It is known that he had a rice mill and quite a bit of property. It is believed that Butch Aydel left French Settlement for a while after the death of Polomie and bought a plantation in St. Charles Parish. However, he returned to French Settlement, died at his son's house, T.D. Aydell, and was buried in French Settlement. Would like more information on the activities of "Butch" Aydell. Issac Lambert Jules, Thomas D' Aquin, Antoine, Ansele and Eugene Aydell are the five brothers whose descendents originated in French Settlement, therefore, each of you may connect your direct line to this genealogy. It would be interesting to have all descendents from the five to the present compiled. Anyone interested in helping on this project should contact me. Lambert "Au Chaloupe" they came, one hundred sixty eight years ago, in the cold month of January eighteen hundred and eight to clear and inhabit this land (defrechie' et habite' une terre). Three families joined a few settlers along the Amite Rivver. They were the families of Joseph Lambert, Paul Guitreau and Alexandre Brignac of whom I shall write. Other related families came to the Amite River Colony called La Cote and by eighteen hundred and ten, starting at Bayou King George to Bayou Collyell were the following settlers: Jacob Fauser married to Scholastic Villic Joseph Fauser married to Anastasic Villar Joseph Heard married to Harriet Norton J.B. Vickner married to Rosalie Picou Gregory Brown married to Joseph Lambert married to Theotiste Vickner Henri Villar married to Rosalie Vickner Jean Louis Picou married to Marie Francoise DeMoulin Paul Guitreau married to Josephine Vickner Mathew Brignac married to Marguerite Vicknair Louis Lobell married to Leonide Vicknair Antoine Hidell married to Cesaire Millet Alexandre Brignac married to Agnes Poche The Vicknair sisters, Theotiste, Rosalie, Josephine, Marguerite and Leonide, were daughters of Nicholas Vicknair and Apolonie Helfre of German nationality. Son of Jean Baptiste Adam Vickner and Marie Therese Girard. She is known to have had a son. 1-f-Joseph Marie Zelina second marriage to a widower, Samuel Settoon. No known issues of this marriage. Marie Zelina is a legend in the Lambert family. She is said to have lived to be a hundred years old. In checking the St. Joseph Church records, I found this entry - Marie Augelina Lambert nee 1808 La plus vielle femme de la Paroisse. Buried 13 September 1906. Her exact age at the time of death, 99 years, 11 months and 2 days. She was buried over her mother's grave (Theotice Lambert nee Vickner) in the "Vieux Cemetiere". She has no marker. She is said to have been able to speak German, French, Spanish, English and some Indian languages. ("La langue et les Cri des Choctaw") 7 - JEAN CYPRIEN (SYMPHORIEN) LAMBERT Born 10 December 1808. Baptized 27 March 1816, age 8, St. James Church, St. James, Louisiana Married Marguerite (Mirza) Guitreau. Mirza is deceased by 1870 census. Joseph Lambert is deceased by February 8, 1821. His succession in St. Helena Parish Court House list three (3) major children and three (3) minor children. Joseph is buried in the Old French Settlement Cemetery. His grave is to the left of Theotiste Lambert nee Vickner, the oldest marker in the cemetery. Joseph's grave has no marker, only an iron cross. Theotiste Vickner Lambert has the oldest headstone in the Old French Settlement Cemetery. The inscription reads: Theotiste Lambert nee Vickner, Born August 19, 1784, Died January 21, 1857 There is an error in the date of birth. Theotiste was baptized in St. John the Baptist Church, Baptismal Book I, Page 34a, 23 August 1777 and probably born a short time before this date. Using the 1784 date, she would have been only 10 years old when she married Joseph, February 6, 1794. Using the 1777 date, she would have been 17 years old which is probably right. (Note: Joseph Lambert was buried in teh cemetery in 1821. We know the cemetery is older than this date). PAUL GUITREAU - GUIDROZ was born in New Orleans, Louisiana about 1770. There are no records of his birth because of the fire that destroyed the early recored of the St. Louis Cathedral. Paul was the son of Abraham Guidroz and Catherine Buquoy. Paul married Jospehine Vickner 28 April 1802, St. Ann's Church, Morganza, Louisiana. There were residents of False River, Pointe Coupee Parish. The marriage made legitimate their three children, Paul age of 7 years, Charlotte age of 4 years and Artimise age of 2 years. Josephine Vickner born 19 March 1775. Daughter of Nicolas Vickner and Apaline Helfre. Children of Paul and Josephine: 1-Paul II, born 1794 2-Charlotte, born 1798 3-Artimise, born 1800 4-Nicolas, born November 1804, baptized 24 November 1805 5-Marcelin, born 6 December 1806, baptized 14 June 1807 6-Marie, born 26 July 1809, baptized January 1810 Nicolas, Marcelin and Marie were baptized in St. John Baptist Church, Edgard, Louisiana. Paul Guitreau is deceased by 1810. He had settled his family a la Cote in 1808. In 1810 Josephine signs the land claim certificate as the widow of Paul who had cleared the land of four arpents front - this is in Section 42 where the Town Hall is today. Josephine Vickner is deceased by 1840 census. There is no recorded death or marker in the cemetery. No doubt some of the graves that have no stone today might be of some of the early residents of the community. It is fortunate that there was a record to be found in a book titled Caldwell Parish Garden of Memories. The cemetery is well kept up with a chain-length fence aroud it. Take Highway 4 East from Chatham about 13 miles until you see the Palestine Church sign on your left. The church and cemetery are visible once you turn off Highway 4.
