Mitchell, 1949, Winn Parish, LA. From: October 27, 1949 Winn Parish Enterprise Lt. Mitchell Is New Commander of Winn Guard Lieutenant John W. Mitchell, veteran of Pacific warfare and a resident of the Wheeling Community, is the new commander of the Winn Parish National Guard Unit, Company G, 199th Infantry. On Wednesday he succeeded Captain Van Ingram, who is leaving Winnfield. Mitchell, who given a commission last May as a second lieutenant, received his orders form the Louisiana National Guard headquarters, and took over Wednesday with the usual check of equipment. Lieutenant Mitchell served 31 months in the Pacific during World War II. Discharged as a sergeant after campaigns with the 81st Infantry Division on Leyte and Pellilu, he later was sent to North Japan with the occupation troops. The new commander extended an invitation to young men of Winn Parish to join the Guard unit now while there are plenty of openings and ratings. "With the new armory soon ready for occupancy, we will have a better place for training, storage of equipment, and for recreation," he said. He pointed out that the new pay scale offers an even better opportunity in the Guard for profitable use of spare time. Lieutenant Mitchell is assisted by Second Lieutenant Winfrey Blair. The unit enjoyed a fish fry at Saline Lake last Wednesday night. The event was planned by Lieutenant Mitchell. --------------E66EAA6ACBF30BDB90325C4C--
