Author: JDupre5762 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lacroix/137.154.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: dit means literally "says". So the name would be read Lacroix says Bourgault. It is not so much a nickname as an additional name. It was often used to identify a person when several people shared the same last name. The second name was sometimes a geographic one relating to where someone came from,(one of my relatives has dit Suisse, he was from Switzerland) sometimes it could relate to an occupation but there were no hard and fast rules. What often happened over time was the dit name becoming the primary name for the descendants. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Somewhere I picked up a reference that has him as a soldier in the Companie de Mines. I do I find out more about this company? Was it Militia or Royal Army of France. Mines or de Mines was probably the company commander. What Regiment was this? The timer frame was probably late 1680s to early 1690s about twenty years after the Carignan-Sallieres regiment was withdrawan. Any help appreciated. In 1930 and 1940 censuses, find Marvin and Lillian LaCroix on Union Ave in Dover in 1940. In 1930 they lived on 100 block of Walnut St in Dover, as did his parents, in the same house. There were cousins, as well, on about the 400 block of Walnut in 1940. I believe their origins were in TN Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
