    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I have sent the following information to Sharon and will post it here in the hope that someone with a better background on Homer's history will know if this could be the event she describes. I have not yet checked that wonderful series of "Claiborne" books published in various years, perhaps they will shed some more light. Here is what I did find. There is a reference in the Minden section of the Webster Parish Centennial Booklet. It says: “The year of 1859 was made memorable when Judge Egan shot and killed the sheriff, Elkin Jones.” This book was put together by the late Rita Moore Krouse and she does not name her source and I have not been able to find another account to confirm this event. Unfortunately, her records, while they have been preserved, are not currently accessible. It would seem likely that the records of any formal investigation by a Grand Jury or a trial if one occurred would be in the court records at Homer. Although Mrs. Krouse seems to be saying that the killing took place in Minden, the Judge did live in Homer, and any court proceedings would have taken place in Homer, so it is entirely possible that the killing did occur in Homer. I’m not aware of any newspaper covering those events from Claiborne Parish, however it could be mentioned in some of the papers being publis! hed in Shreveport or even New Orleans. As to the other post on the Arizona Seminary. In his book, "Thoughts, Visions, and Sketches of North Louisiana," Dr. Luther Longino has a chapter devoted to old Arizona and his time as a student at the school. He states that the school began to decline with the sale of the Arizona factory. After the departure of Professor Nicholson, he says," the school was largely left in the hands of Leslie (William Leslie) and Harris (Rev. A. Harris, father of T. H. Harris). The section on Arizona runs from page 183 to 197 in his book and includes a picture of the school at Arizona.
