Posted on: Claiborne Parish La Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/La/Claiborne/10168 Surname: White, Turbeville, Coleman, Cook, Mayes ------------------------- Claus Staffen is found on page 345A, line 23 of the 1880 census of Claiborne Parish, LA, dated 10 June 1880 and enumerated by my g-g-uncle Ben R. Coleman. The family entry reads: Staffen, Claus W M 43 Hd Md Farmer Ger Ger Ger Staffen, Frances W F 33 Wife Md Kpg Hse Ga Ga Ga Staffen, Georgia W F 16 Dau. S Ga Ga Ga On the next line is a name that appears to be Simons, Martha, 49 year old widow with Sarah 20, Rosina 18, Isham 16, James 14, and Madison 9, in the household. I believe David 24, is found in the household of John W. Penix who lived near Tulip. Mr. Staffen's farm was about one half mile SW of the then Village of Aycock and about one mile NW of the farm of my g-grandfather, William White. I think it was in Sec. 19, Twp 20N Rng 5W but don't hold me to that. In addition to the Whites, some of his neighbors in 1880's were Walton Wilson, T. B. Coleman, F. P. Coleman, Bryant Hood, Jonas Joiner, Jesse Watson, Charles P. Gee, Wm Sconyers, W. B. Edmonds, Lee Swint, E. R. Cook, and their families. He and his wife are buried in Tulip Cemetery, but the names on their headstones read STEPHENS, Clause; and STEPHENS, Frances J. w/o C. Stephens. Birth and death dates are the same as you had. Mrs. David Simons headstone reads: SIMONS Georgianna MCCLENDON w/o David R. Simons. Descendants of those buried in Tulip Cemetery gather to honor our ancestors on the Saturday before the second Sunday in May and have done so for well over one hundred years. Memorial Services are held in the church followed by "dinner on the grounds". The original Church, built in 1872, still stands, although since about 1900 worship service has been held only on our Memorial Day.
Posted on: Claiborne Parish La Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/La/Claiborne/10159 Surname: Simons, McClendon, Reese, Roach, Busby, Butler, Edwards, Wilson, Holt, McCarty, Colvin, Driskill, Oxford ------------------------- I am having a bit of a problem locating some family. I am looking for Claus (also found as Claud and John) Steffens (also found as Staffen)and family. There is no listing on the census - granted, it could be listed under Stephens or some other name. He was born in Bremen, Germany in 1837. In 1857 he came to the United States. Initially he was in SC and he became naturalized. Then came the Civil War and he enlisted in the Confederate Army and fought during the entire war. His money was lost with the defeat of the Confederacy as it was in a SC bank. He married Frances Jane (aka FANNY) Reece McClendon, the widow of Samuel Lee McClendon, who was in Georgia at the time. He accumulated another bank account and having heard of the fertile land in Texas, he, his wife and stepdaughter Georgianna McClendon, started to Texas. They found that the train ran only to Monroe, Louisiana. It was the dead of winter and the roads were bad, but they got passage to ARCADIA and decided to buy a farm there. They bought a farm about 12 miles from ARCADIA in the AYCOCK community. He is buried in the Simons' plot in Tulip Cemetery, Athens, LA. His grave is marked and kept by his adopted SIMONS family. Claus DOB is May 10, 1837 Fanny DOB is November 24, 1845 His adopted daughter was born July 12, 1862 and named Georgeanna McClendon. She might still have had the surname McClendon or possibly Reese. His wife's name was Frances Jane, aka Fanny. I think it more likely that they lived in Claiborne parish, as Georgeanna married David Richard Simons who lived in the Arizona Community of Claiborne Parish. If anyone can help me locate them on a census or any other information that would be wonderful. He died in 1919 and she died in 1920. I am trying to find them when Georgeanne was still with them, she married David Simons in 1882. Karen

Dear Pat: While searching for my family (in Bienville Parish et al) and identifying death dates, I found that dates on the tombstones are NOT always accurate. For instance my ggrandmother's date of death was one YEAR OFF; and her youngest son's date of death was twenty-four years in error. Yesterday while I was looking at some burial records through Rootsweb, I believe, someone had put Claiborne Parish on the web, and there was Rocky Springs Baptist Church Cemetary lIsbon, Claiborne Ph, LA. When I searched it for Harris, it came up with Rev. R.A Harris and his wife, Mrs. R. A. Harris, birth and death dates identical for Austin Dabney Harris and partially right for Rebecca Amaretta Milner. Obviously this is wrong and they had dates of birth for Rebecca as 1877 when her husband died in 1881 making her four years old. But that is where my records say they are, so I believe the graves are theirs. Pat Harris

Dear Terry, This is very strange. My father's family is Underwood. We might possibly be related to Bud Underwood. But the relatives who lived in Claiborne Parish LA were named Thomas H. Holcomb (b. 10 Jan. 1823, died 18 Jan. 1864) and his wife Matilda Gwin (b. 28 Nov. 1827, d. 18 Jul. 1888). Their daughter (my ggrandmother) Miranda Louisiana Holcomb was born 10 June 1858 in Claiborne Parish, but then died in Terrell, Texas 26 May 1905. It is confusing to me because I didn't even know we had Underwoods in Claiborne Parish! Bud sounds like a cool guy to me. If I find out anything more, or any connection with your relatives, I'll let you know. P. Mumford
Posted on: Claiborne Parish La Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/La/Claiborne/10155 Surname: Nails, Bates, Underwood ------------------------- Hello, I am calling on Everyone in Claiborne Parish who may have kin people there, who may be have access to census records, who can help us in any way to locate information on Mason N. Nails and Louisa/Louvisa/Louvenia Bates. Mason was born 1844 in Tennessee. His family moved to Claiborne around 1850. Mason had infantile paralysis as a child and was badly crippled. Mason went to work for, and to live with a man called Bud Underwood. This man thought a great deal of Mason and treated him like a son. Mason learned to make wooden furniture and weave baskets. Mason would not have served in the Civil Ward due to his disability. He married Louisa Bates about 1863. The date I have is Sep. 4. 1863. This feels a little early because they didn't have their first child, Samuel M. until 1874. In 1875 a daughter, Fannie was born. They had a total of 6 children. Sam, Fannie, Bertha Ann "Pet", Hannah, Louvenia "Dink". and Barney Fulton Nails. I believe most of these children, if not all, were born in Claiborne Parish. Mason later moved to Red River Parish where he died in 1891. He is buried at Holley Springs Cemetery along with several of his children. Louisa is not buried there leading me to believe that she is buried in Claiborne Parish. Almost everyone in this family died at an early age. Records are not easy to find. I am not sure where Mr. Underwood lived. Many of the children located in Desota Parish. Some went to Red River, and some moved down south. If you could please take the time to help us find info on these people it would be greatly appreciated. I live up in Memphis, TN and won't be home any time soon. I appreciate any help you can give us. Thank you, Terry
