    1. [LACLAIBO] Ham and Canada/Canady surnames
    2. eccles98nq6
    3. Hello, I am researching Charlie/Charley Ham and Mary (Canada) Ham of Homer, Louisiana. They eventually left Louisiana and ended up in Arkansas. I found them in the 1900 census I believe in Arkansas. I have been unable to find them in the census in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. Is there anyone who may also be researching the "Ham" and/or "Canada/Canady" surname of Claiborne Parish or any other parish in Louisiana. I am African-American. I would also be interested in anyone researching any white "Ham" or "Canada/Canady" surnames of Louisiana. Has anyone come across any slaveowners or planters with the Ham or Canada/Canady surnames? If so, please let me hear from you. Thanks, Penny

    1. Re: [LACLAIBO] Newspapers
    2. Susan
    3. Jerry Lou, Yes, there were several. I don't have the information right in front of me, but I believe "The Claiborne Advocate" was the first newspaper in the parish, published around 1851 just after Homer was incorporated in 1850. I believe there was also another newspaper published in 1850s known as "The Democrat". I remember seeing it in some of the early minutes of the Claiborne Parish Police Jury. In the late 1850s, "The Homer Iliad" was one of the few newspapers to oppose secession from the Union prior to the Civil War. It only lasted a few years. Around the turn of the century, there was a newspaper known as "The Clipper" that merged with "The Guardian-Journal" in 1903. In the early part of the 20th century, there was a newspaper called "The Homer News" published for a number of years. Haynesville's first newspaper was "The Greenback Dollar" published in 1870s, then "The Haynesville Star" in 1880s, then "The Haynesville News" in 1920. I know little about how long these papers were published or where old copies can be found. Most of the information I got from other writings or history archives. 3. The Haynesville News office is located at 604 North Main in Homer, LA, just east of the Homer Post Office. The phone number is (318) 927-3721. Talk to Joann Williams. I don't know about their microfilm. I am editor of The Guardian-Journal in Homer. Their microfilm is located at LSU-S Library in Shreveport, LSU Library in Baton Rouge, and select copies at the Louisiana Tech Library. Copies as far back as 1880, I believe. I would expect Haynesville News would be about the same. 3. Susan, Thanks for the information. I remember reading great articles in the Guardian Journal back in the 1960's written by Lily Tucker, I think, and she wrote about early people in the area. Also in the Haynesville News during this time there were pictures in many issues of early people and places titled "Remember When" I would love to read those again. Jerry Lou

Check out the main archives page if anyone is interested. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/archives.htm If in doubt about any parish and where to send the files just send them to me and I'll make sure the right person gets them or put them up myself for the ones with no active manager. 1. [LACLAIBO] Magazine/Book "Confederate Veteran" ????
    2. I was sent a page in a Magazine or book that has a small note about the death of my Grandfather Henry Winn (died December 5, 1900 in Columbia County, Arkansas). At the top/Center it reads "Confederate Veteran" page 545 In handwriting, along the bottom "The Conferderate Veteran Magazine" No other information regarding where this document came from. Would like to know for my "Sources". The person who sent it has had it for many years and did not know where it came from. "Timothy Oakley, Adjutant of Camp Henry Gray, Timothea, Louisiana, reports the death of a member, Henry Winn, at his home in Columbia County, Arkansas, on December 5, aged seventy-eight. Comrade Winn was a soldier in the Cresent Regiment, Louisiana Volunteers, company F." Company Roll Muster has date of Jan & Feb 1863, Enlisted Jan 17, 186? at Boosier Parish, louisiana, by Col. Berry, for the War Period. Then, He was a POW at Bayou TECHE, La. Any info out there ? Captureed April 14, 1863, paroled May 11, 1863. What battles were fought/where/ who captured him ? Cresent Regiment, Louisiana Volunteers, company F according to a piece of paper I have here states that it is a Temporary regiment organized about 3-1862 for 90 days, on June 30, 1862 General Bragg ordered the regiment broken up and reassigned to the 18th Regiment of Louisiana Artillery, over-ruled by the War Department the Cresent Regiment was re-organized on October 2, 1863. On November 3, 1863, The Cresent Regiment was consolidated with the 16th Battallion Louisiana Infantry (Also known as the Confederate Guards Response Battalion) and the 11th Battalion Louisiana Infantry, and the now Consolidated Cresent Regiment Louisiana Infantry. Mostly I would like to know where this obit came from. Ley K O'Connor
