I'm finally getting around to organizing all of my research and I found something I meant to post in July. Someone on the Claiborne List was asking questions about the name Monzingo. While I was in Homer at the County Clerk's Office this past July, I ran across a deed for Monzingo. It was in the book titled "Index to old original deeds K-Z" listed as #399 the deed was from Angusta L. Long to Monzingo. If anyone is interested in this data you could contact the Claiborne County Clerk's Office for a lookup. Thanks, Jerry Linney
I have no picture, but am wondering if the Joel Simeon Murrell was the J.S. Murrell that died during the CW in about 1862 or 63 and was married to M.A. Arthur. I found it was quite common in early day Claiborne Parish, for the young couple to go to Arkansas to marry. Some went over to Lafayette Co., Ark., which is online at RootsWeb. 1870 marriage record of Winship Capers Connor and Tullora Fannie Cornelius (daughter of Dr. Matthias Cornelius and Elizabeth A. Lewis). Now, mind you I'm not saying if they are there, BUT, I have found about 85% of my Claiborne family's marriages in Union Co and Columbia Co., Arkansas. And you are in luck to look. I spent over 5 years transcribing the Union County Marrriages and they are on USGENWEB in the Arkansas/Union Co. Archives. Try there. I have posted a few hundred for Columbia Co , also at USgenweb. No promises, but, take a look. I asked my grandmother why almost everyone got married in Union County and she said it was because you could get your farmwork done in the morning, pack a lunch and take a train to Union Co and get back in time to finish up your chores. Other coice was to walk, ride a horse, borrow a buggy, wagon and take most of the day to get to and from the Homer Court House. My families were mostly in Haynesville. Ley

This is the 2nd Parish we have completed, Bossier being # 1. The results will be published shortly. In using the 1880 census for Claiborne, we have been able to establish several families back into the slave conveyances. We hope this information will be of value to those seeking their ancestors. For the one searching favorite churches: I would have two churches to recommend as favorite churches to see. It may be because I know the part that these churches played in the lives of my ancestors. The oldest active Baptist Church in Mississippi is the Ebenezer Baptist Church located in the rural area near Liberty, Amite County, Mississippi (in Ducktown Area). The second is the Atchafalaya Presbyterian Church located in the Bayou Current area of St. Landry Parish. It was formed around 1850 and is still active today. Both churches appear architecturally as they did in the beginning. A Family Center has been added next to the Presbyterian Church, but the little church remains the same. Martha Henagan Luby

Mine would be the Colquitt Methodist Church in the Colquitt community of Claiborne Parish. Many of my family are buried in the Colquitt Cemetery. Janet Bailey Bryant
Mine would be the little church associated with New Ramah Cemetery, where I'm related to almost everyone buried there. Outskirts of Haynesville, Millerton ? Anyway halfway between Grandma and her sister that lives in the ouskirts if Emerson, just over the border. Ley K O'Connor

My favorite church is the Friendship Baptist Church located in Haynesville, La. Mary
My favorite old church would be the old Alabama Methodist Church located in Union Parish. The Weldon Cemetery is located next door to it. I think it is located near Bernice, Louisiana. Maybe someone on the board could tell you. The history of the church was framed and hanging on the wall when I was there in 1969. They only had five members at that time. The church was unlocked. Enjoy your trip, Sherry Gritzbaugh
There is one in Pineville on main street. It is by the jewish cemetery. It was a church but now is not used for services but for some kind of office I believe. I can't remember the name of it but it is really beautiful. If you are in Alexandria and go into Pineville on the Jackson Street Bridge it is just a block or two past the bridge on the left. You can't miss it. It isn't very big but it sure is beautiful. Nola Ellington

I have located an ancestor, Gay Mathews, that I have been looking for, for quite some time. He/She is shown on the 1900 Fed Census as a Boarder living with the family of ROBERT & JANE McCLENDON. Is anyone related to, or familiar with the McClendon family that might be able to provide me with any information on Gay Mathews. According the the 1880 and 1900 Fed Census, Gay Mathews was a Male. Has anyone heard this name used for a male? I know the Census is often incorrect, but twice... Thanks, Jerry Linney San Diego, CA
