    3. Karen, There are a couple of Havens mentioned in the few volumes of Ancestor Charts that I have from the Southwest Louisiana Genealogy Society. Volume 1 1985 has John (Jack) Havens, Jr. b. 24 July 1812; d. 19 January 1900 in MS and m. 3 October 1830 to Sabra Ann Fletcher b. 8 July 1814 d. 4 April 1882. Their son... William L. Havens b. 18 April 1837 in Jackson Co., MS d. 17 June 1931 in Singer, LA m. Mary Louise LAdner b. 30 September 1836 in Hancock County, MS d. 4 September 1899 in Singer, LA Then their son... Jefferson Rankin Havens b. 20 April 1871 in Jackson Co., MS d. 4 May 1956 in Singer, LA married Rachel E. Slaydon b. 20 January 1872 in Calcasieu Parish, LA d. 29 April 1937 in Singer, LA Then their son..... Lonnie Havens married Mayola Alston and had a daughter named Betty Jean Havens. Betty married Irwin Carol Stine. Now in Volume 5 1997 there is mention of Charles Havens who married his cousin Mary Havens (it does not state what cousins....1st, 2nd etc) and their daughter Araminter Havens b. 19 Dec 1877 in Ragley, LA d. 4 Dec 1961 in Hineston, LA married on 15 Nov 1896 to Abraham Evander Marler b. 25 Feb 1870 in Hineston, LA d. 23 Dec 1949 in Hineston, LA. Not sure if any of this helps, but I thought I would throw it at you just in case. Have a great day! 3. Hello, Hey I have been looking for the John Henry Havens family who were reportedly living in Lake Charles in 1894, and I have written to the gen. society there, and written in to the mailing list, with no response. John Henry Havens married Metellah Cramer in Fremont, NE in 1877, his father was Romanzo his mother was Cordelia Seymour. Surely John and Metellah had some children, and since she was my great aunt, I would love to find descendants, besides genealogy information. Thanks for the request to send in requests, I would really like to find these folks and learn about them. 3. Hi Everyone, The Lake Charles American Press does have a web site at <http://www.americanpress.com> However, the Southwest Louisiana Genealogy Library at 411 Pujo Street in Lake Charles, La 70601 has all of the newspapers of the Lake Charles American Press, Echo, The American dating back in the 1880's or 1890's. They also have a card catalog on the obituaries. If you will write them and send a SASE along with .20 (twenty cents) per copy, they will look up the obituary and mail it to you. You can't get any cheaper than that! They also have the marriage records for some years. I am currently working on the marriage record index. And I have the years they have available on the file for marriage records in the Archives. Just go to <http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/calcasie.htm> then to marriages. I only have the A's done, but some day, hopefully in my life time, I will get them all done! <BG> Hope this helps and I am so glad to see the list active! Great job getting it going Judy! Some of my Jean/Jeans family moved into Calcasieu Parish in the years just before the Civil War. By 1913 they were in the Merryville area in the northern part of Calcasieu that became a part of Beauregard Parish. Now, I'm aware that the Calcasieu Parish courthouse burned, I believe in 1910, and I'd like to know if any of the marriage and land records of those earlier years survived and if so where they might be found. The marriage records, especially, would be extremely helpful at this point in sorting out who's who. Thanks for your offer to help, do you have any connections to the LeBleu family?? They date way back in Calcasieu history. Alice McRae

    1. Marriage Records
    2. Hello List. I am searching for a record of an old marriage, or marriages I should say. Francis Marion Browning married Amanda Elizabeth Cooper about 1870-1884 in Calcasieu or Beauregard parishes. Elizabeth died in 1886 and Francis married her sister Hattie Cooper probably within a year. Anyone having access to these records, I would certainly appreciate a lookup. Thanks a bunch. MT

However, so many researchers feel that anything in print MUST be right. Some can't believe that their sainted ancestors would lie. And obviously one of mine - or someone very close - did! 3. Floreda, The info from most obits comes from survivors. If the information is incorrect, it could be that the survivors were misinformed or the other info you have is incorrect JF3bMJB@aol.com wrote: > I would like to cite a good example why one must use obituaries with a great > deal of caution. 2. I would like to cite a good example why one must use obituaries with a great deal of caution. Following is part of the obituary for my g-grandfather who died in Lake Charles March 24, 1916. There are the usual typographical errors - and one big bald-facaed lie. I am unsure what newspaper it came from because all I have is the cutout obituary. I will skip part of it. Dr. R. A. Duke died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carroll Gillett in Lake Charles yesterday. He was born in Pardue, Dickson County, Tenn March 20, 1841. He leaves his wife, a daughter Mrs. Carroll Gillett; two sons, R. A. Duke of Pardue Tennessee and G. M. Duke of Alice, Texas: two sisters Mrs. Martha Cato and Mrs. Rhoda Abernathy of Nashville, Tennessee. Dr Duke was an invalid for many years. He traveled extensively in search for health, coming here last November hoping to prolong his life for a while. (skip a paragraph) Dr. Duke was a surgeon in the Confederate service during the civil war and a member of the Masonic order. F. H. Gay, of the local Masonic lodge, and Capt.. G. M. Gossett, of the Veterans, aided in the funeral arrangements. The bald-faced lie? He did not graduate as a doctor until March 1866 (from the University of Nashville, Republic of Tennessee). He served in Company D of the 50th Regiment of Tennessee Infantry. The following year he became ill and was sent home (his younger brother Greene Wesley Duke, Jr replaced him). He contracted Tuberculosis and lost a lung as a result. The facts are all the same: he was a doctor, he served in the confederate army and he lost a lung. They just have to be put in the correct order. Floreda
