The Caddo Parish Unit in Shreveport has just the same system that you can get records from Elaine ----- Original Message ----- From: <LACALCAS-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <LACALCAS-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 18, 1999 6:21 AM Subject: LACALCAS-D Digest V99 #35
Hi everyone, I have had a lot of questions about the Calcasieu Parish Health Unit now handling vital records, so I will try and answer everyone in this email. This office is pretty much like the one in Alexandria and New Orleans (and I am sure there are other locations). If a death record is older than 50 years or the birth record is older than 100 years, then it has to come from the State Archives in Baton Rouge. I have a web site that has the form that you can print. It is <http://usersa.usunwired.net/mmoore/other/phs520a.htm>. This form has been up a while and the prices have changed....so be sure and refer to my first email, until I have a chance to update the form. The form has all of the information including both the New Orleans address and the Baton Rouge address, if you going to mail in a request. They do not want mail in requests sent to the Lake Charles office. The Lake Charles Vital records office does not have a web site nor do they have email. It is for walk in traffic only and the hours are from 8am to...oh gosh I forgot! It was either closing at 3pm or 4pm...now I really cannot remember! If an out of 'towner' needs to know, just email me and I will call them and let you know. It is for all of Louisiana and not just for Calcasieu. I went by there Friday and picked up a couple of death records that I have been wanting and just never sent for them....so it is convenient to have them around. They tell you the wait is about 30 minutes, but it actually only took about 15 minutes. The State Archives also has a web site at <http://www.sec.state.la.us/arch-1.htm> On their site is a link to "Birth and death records" that is more specific on dates and other information. I cut and 'pasted' the following from that page, but there is more info there. The Louisiana State Archives has acquired the following: Birth Certificates (Orleans Parish only) - over 100 years beginning with 1790-1898 Death Certificates (Orleans Parish only) - 1804-1948 Death Certificates (Statewide) - 1912-1948 Marriage Certificates (Orleans Parish only) - 1870-1948 (Index only 1831-1869) Hope this helps.... Have a great day! Margaret
Sorry about that yall I meant the Calcasieu Parish Health Unit not the Calcasieu Parish Health certificate.......I had certificates on my mind! Gee! Margaret
I just found this out and thought I would pass it on....but if you need a birth certificate or death certificate for Louisiana.....you can now go to the Calcasieu Parish Health certificate and get.....Prices are: Birth certificate $15.00 Birth card $ 9.00 Death Certificate $5.00 You get it as quick as their computer can print it! This is wonderful! The health unit is located at 721 E. Prien Lake Rd - Lake Charles, LA . Have a great day! Margaret P.S. Sorry for the duplicate postings, just wanted to make sure I let everyone know.

The actual census images are online in the Calcasieu LaGenWeb Archives. That url is http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/calcasie.htm Click on Census and go to the link to the images. click on Index to the 1860 census images and you can do a search and find to locate all Gills. When you find the one you are looking for note the # of the image and then go to the images and see if for yourself. Ain't this grand? Happy hunting. Hi rooters, I'm sharing some information from Le Comite. Any questions should be referred to <A HREF="mailto:Judy.Riffel@cajunelectric.com">Judy Riffel</A>. CherrylM ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The August issue of le Raconteur is a special Acadian edition which was published to coincide with the Congres Mondial Acadien (World Acadian Congress) activities scheduled for July 31 through August 15th throughout South Louisiana. The issue features family histories, censuses, civil records, and tombstone inscriptions, all with an Acadian theme. The first four articles deal with early families--Melancon, LeBlanc, Ayo, and Albert. The next three are census type listings beginning with Natchez in 1768; Baton Rouge, Manchac, and St. James in 1788; and Carencro in the late 1790s. There is also a transcription of an extensive probate record of Paul Leger of St. Landry Parish, and the first installment of tombstone inscriptions from Arnaudville. And finally, a list of Acadian resources at the Louisiana State Archives provides clues for further research. This special edition is currently available only through a 1999 membership in Le Comite' which carries with it a subscription to le Raconteur. To join, send $18 to Le Comite' des Archives, c/o Ann Riffel, 2576 Bartlett St., Baton Rouge, LA 70805. Members of Le Comite' des Archives will be attending two CMA family reunions where they will set up displays of the society's books and periodicals. Ann and Judy Riffel will attend the Breaux Family Reunion at Parc Hardy in Breaux Bridge on Saturday, August 7th, and the Melancon Family Reunion at the Yambilee Building in Opelousas, on Saturday, August 14th. They are also planning to attend the Genealogical Symposium at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux on Thursday, August 5th. If you're planning to attend, please look for their table. Le Comite' has set its annual meeting date for September 11, 1999. Speakers will be Donald J. Lemieux, Director of the Louisiana State Archives; Glen Fortune of the East Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court's office; and Judy Riffel. Dr. Lemieux will speak on past accomplishments and future plans for the State Archives. Mr. Fortune will discuss the E.B.R. Parish Clerk's plans for a genealogical web page. And, Ms. Riffel will explain how to use the Natchez Trace Collection Provincial & Territorial Documents now available on microfilm at the State Archives. Admission is free to Le Comite' members. Memberships will be accepted at the door. A list of all of Le Comite's books for sale is available on the Internet. The tables of contents of its journal, le Raconteur, will be updated soon to include the August 1999 issue. The annual indexes are current through 1998. These files are available for downloading on the Louisiana State Archives' web page at: www.sec.state.la.us/arch-5.htm

Hi Everyone, I received this letter from Judy LaBorde Coordinator Molecular & Human Genetics Center at Louisiana State University Medical Center and thought the seminar might be of interest to some of you. Sorry if you are on one or more of the lists and receive this multiple times. Margaret Rentrop Moore Calcasieu & Vermilion Parish Coordinator of the USGenWeb Here is Judy's letter: My purpose in writing is to request help in publicizing a major health event that will take place on August 9th at McNeese entitled "Genetics of the Acadian People." The event is being organized by LSU Medical Center and is part of the Congres Mondial Acadien. What follows is the press release about the event: "GENETICS OF THE ACADIAN PEOPLE" TO BE HELD AUGUST 9th Discoveries in genetics are redefining medicine and our understanding of the basic causes of disease. But how does this new knowledge translate into improved health care and why are some diseases more frequent in the Acadia population? "Because of the need to sort out so much new information there has never been a better time to educate the community about genetics," says Dr. Bronya Keats, director of the Molecular and Human Genetics Center at LSU Medical Center in New Orleans, which is organizing a major public health event entitled "Genetics of the Acadian People." The all-day event will be held Monday, August 9th, at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, from 9:00AM until 4:30 PM. Co-sponsors are Congres Mondial Acadien and Southwest Louisiana Area Health Education Center. BACKGROUND One in 20 American babies is born with a genetic disorder. Among the Acadian people, risks for some diseases range from 35% to 250% higher than the national average. AGENDA There will be four main speakers: (1) Dr. Charles Scriver, a renowned geneticist from McGill University in Montreal, who will talk on "History of Families, Histories of Genes;" (2) Dr. Bronya Keats, director of the Genetics Center at LSU Medical Center who has been involved in genetic research among the Acadians for 16 years, will talk on "Genetic Links and Cajun Connections;" (3) Dr. Michal Jazwinski, a biochemist who is also with LSU Medical Center, will talk about major research on the genetics of aging that in the future will compare the Acadian populations of Louisiana and Nova Scotia, and (4) Dr. Carl Brasseaux, assistant director of the Center for Louisiana Studies at USL, will talk on "Acadian to Cajun: History of a Society Built on the Extended Family." There will be other doctors at the small breakout sessions who will talk about and answer questions on these topics such as genes and cancer, genes and psychiatric Illness, genetic disorders in children, genetic disorders in adults, genetic research in Acadiana, genetic testing and genetic counseling, gene-based therapies, psychological and social impact of genetic disorders. REGISTRATION There is no charge to attend but advance registration is necessary. All activities will be fully accessible to people with disabilities, including interpreters for braille, sign language and tactile. For on-line registration there is a webpage in both French and English located at htttp://www.acadian-cajun.com/genetics.htm Copies of the informational flyer/registration form are available from Judy LaBorde at jlabor@lsumc.edu and (504)568-6117.
