Tod, The California birth and Death Index is on line and I spent several hours checking them yesterday. It is a cumbersome site with the search in a little corner and lots of ads. However you have to click on the year and then the name and it will check. Mother's maiden names are sometimes included. Good luck with the search! They are current until the 1998 area on some, and go back to the turn of the century. However the site is after the money for getting copies for you.
