My name is Clare Sanders Washington and I'm researching relatives in both Caddo and Bossier Parishes. Interestingly enough, the surnames on my maternal side of the tree went back and forth between the states of Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas. Specifically, the counties of Cass, Bowie and Marion counties in TX; Miller County in Arkansas; and Caddo and Bossier Parishes in LA. These are African American and Native/African American surnames. BROOKS, HUGHES, SHEPPARD (also spelled SHEPARD/SHEPHARD/SHEPHERD), WAITES These are all on my maternal side of the tree, and all were found on the 1870-1900 federal censuses for Caddo and Bossier Parishes. Then later on the 1900-1920 censuses for Linden (Cass Co.), TX; Jefferson (Marion Co.), TX; Texarkana (Bowie Co.), TX; and Texarkana (Miller Co.), AR. Anyone else doing any research on these names? Anyone have any slave bills of sale, or wills and inventories that might list slaves with the first names: William and Jennie/Jenny (BROOKS); Daniel and Nancy (HUGHES); Isaac and Delia (SHEPARD -- spelled all ways); or William or Arthur (WAITES)?
