    2. Clare
    3. My name is Clare Sanders Washington and I'm researching relatives in both Caddo and Bossier Parishes. Interestingly enough, the surnames on my maternal side of the tree went back and forth between the states of Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas. Specifically, the counties of Cass, Bowie and Marion counties in TX; Miller County in Arkansas; and Caddo and Bossier Parishes in LA. These are African American and Native/African American surnames. BROOKS, HUGHES, SHEPPARD (also spelled SHEPARD/SHEPHARD/SHEPHERD), WAITES These are all on my maternal side of the tree, and all were found on the 1870-1900 federal censuses for Caddo and Bossier Parishes. Then later on the 1900-1920 censuses for Linden (Cass Co.), TX; Jefferson (Marion Co.), TX; Texarkana (Bowie Co.), TX; and Texarkana (Miller Co.), AR. Anyone else doing any research on these names? Anyone have any slave bills of sale, or wills and inventories that might list slaves with the first names: William and Jennie/Jenny (BROOKS); Daniel and Nancy (HUGHES); Isaac and Delia (SHEPARD -- spelled all ways); or William or Arthur (WAITES)? 3. Elaine: Where is it? Did they just move the genealogy dept. out, or build a whole new library? I'm about 35 miles from Shreveport and this comes as a total surprise. I've never even see anything in the paper about it. (Hope they got some new microfilm readers...those old ones were lousy!) 1. Missionary, LA
    2. I almost got to go to Missionary yesterday, just to drive around and see what was what. But my son was driving, and made me a nervous wreck, so we only got as far as Ida. (Thanks goodness) BUT, I am going to get over there, very soon. (Under my own steam). My grandfather and his father were clearing land there, the horses were spooked, and somehow the dynomite in the wagon exploded, and killed ggrandfather. This web site maps all of the area: (most maps do not show Missionary, but this one does) http://www.topozone.com/ It shows Missionary to be another community on the Red and the map also shows a "ferry"? Is that current or historical? I thought that when they put up the bridge at Spring Bank, that the last working ferry in the area was discontinued. VR [email protected] writes: << Hi, I am interested in Missionary, too. I have an ancester who was born there in 1899, according to his social security application. He states it was in Bossier Parish. His name was William Davis and had a twin brother, John. They were an African American family. Thanks, Nadia >>

    2. ELAINE NAGEL
    3. Bettye, This probably doesn't mean anything, but, I have a Mary A. Smith that was married to Archibald T. Munroe in Jan 18, 1849. They lived in Talladega Ct. Ala and moved to almost the Ruston area, in Vernon. (It is almost unoccupied now) He died in the War between the States and she moved to Marshall TX. Sometime after that she moved to Shreveport, La with her 4 girls. They each married a Hull, Wilson, Caperton, and Beardsley between 1874 and 1896. Poor Mary died in the Yellow fever epedimic in 1873. Plain Dealing is just up the road from Shreveport about 30 minutes North.... Elaine (Monroe) Nagel Ya'll keep the messages flowing now so we can keep this list alive..... ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, March 26, 2000 4:30 PM Subject: Smith, Prothro, Pockrus > Was Plain Dealing in Caddo Parish?? 1. Tribal Locations
    2. F. Todd Smith, in his book The Cadddo Indians Tribes at the convergence of Empires, 1542-1854 contains a map on page 105 entitled "Tribal Locations & Treaty of 1835". This map shows the Choctaws on land ceded in treaty in the Lafayette County and Miller County areas of Arkansas. Since the county boundary lines changed at least twice between these two counties you will have to check your dates and locations to see which county those reservations were in. Sulphur Fork was a European Settlement in 1818 call Sulphur Fork Agency. At the Sulphur Fork Agency the Sulphur River and Little River came together as one. The Sulphur River runs from North East Texas into Arkansas where it joins with Little River and later runs into the Red River in Louisiana. Hope this helps. Kathy Roberson Hart

Thre is a place to remove your date and name if you so desire. They have been picked up from all kinds of sources. Have fun filing in the late dats on yor genealogy!
