My husband and I will be in Louisiana Oct. 14. Can someone e-mail directions to Mt. Lebonon cemetery from I-20 east of Shreveport. I have ancestors buried there.
Let me add my thanks to those that have already been given. Do I understand that you will also place other family information on the site? If so, what format would you like to receive it in? GEDCOM files? Thanks again for all your work. We appreciate it! Thanks to everyone for all of the praise, but you all have something to contribute....if you're working on Bienville families you have copied deeds, bible records, family stories, lots of goodies that the page can use! Markie is faster than a speeding bullet at getting it up on the web site, so if you'll just get it to her, we'll put it out there for you. If you have pictures and don't have a scanner, see if you can get someone to scan them and get them to us. Newspaper articles on the pioneer days, pictures of the small towns "back when", obits that were tucked away in grandma's bible etc. It's all helpful and all interesting. Something that I particularly like myself are pictures of the old cemeteries. When I visit one I always like to back off a little and get a picture of the whole cemetery to keep with the pictures of my family's markers. Have you taken any of Bienville cemeteries? Please don't be shy about it..... we want it ALL. (G) Lynelle

You can add my name to the list of grateful receiptants of info from Bienville Pages Thank you very much Markie and Lynelle for all that you are doing Now I need to get my family group sheets on line Talk to you later JOY
Hi Everyone, Lynelle and I wanted to let everyone know that we have been putting some new pages up on the Bienville Parish Page. Abstracts of the families from "The History of Bienville Parish Vol. I"....There are no more copies of Vol. I to sell and since no more can be made...... Lynelle has been typing up a storm, and I have been building the web pages. Below is what is posted on the main page. As Lynelle gets the information typed, I will be adding more pages. Right now, we have the "A's" and "B's" uploaded. **********(quote) "With the permission of Billie Gene Poland we will begin posting abstracts of the Family History articles contained in "History of Bienville Parish Vol I", published in 1984. The name of the contributor of the article is included in the abstracts if it was given in the book. NO ADDRESSES ARE GIVEN IN THE BOOK and we have no knowledge of how to contact them. If a picture is included with the article it is noted, along with the names of the people in the picture. WE CANNOT COPY THE PICTURES FOR YOU OR COPY THE ENTIRE ARTICLES. Some of the articles are quite lengthy and contain much more information than we can copy here. We are copying only the names, dates, marraiges, and children when the information is given in the book. Please be warned that we've made no effort to verify the information and it is only as good as the researcher who contributed it. Also some of the articles on families now living has not been included for obvious reasons. I did check the articles for grandparents names etc. This is "slow going", so please be patient with us! Thanks, Lynelle and Markie " ********* We will continue to add more families as soon as we can. The "C's" are next! Thanks...and happy researching... Markie & Lynelle
Hi Markie & Lynelle, The two of you will probably never understand how much those of us researching our families of Bienville Parish appreciate all the work you two have undertaken to abstract Volume 1 for us. I know it has to be a "work of love" for genealogy and its researchers, because NONE of us really have the time to do all that. I say a THANK YOU and WE LOVE YOU for doing it. How about it gang? Lets hear it for Markie and Lynelle.
Jolie, Thank you for posting your response to Judy on the list. I too have the same questions concerning my family line. I am unsure if purchasing her book would be lucrative for me & would like her to check on my family names first. If she doesn't mind giving her phone number to me also, or I will be glad to use the snail mail method if she has no access to a computer. Thank you, Janina (Harper) Castillo -
A big THANK-YOU to all of you that responded to my query. Because of you, I have a few names and info that I didn't have before. It is a group of truly wonderful and generous people that make up this list! Judy Reed
Hi Judy, In LA, birth certificates over 100 yrs old and death certificates over 50 yrs old are housed in the LA State Archives in Baton Rouge. I'm not sure of the cost but the address is: LA State Archives P.O. Box 94125 Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9125 More recent birth and death certificates are housed in the Department of Health and Hospitals in New Orleans. The cost is $15.00 for birth certificates and $5.00 for death certificates. Make check or money order payable to "Vital Records." Their address is: Vital Records Registry P.O. Box 60630 New Orleans, LA 70160 Marriage records, wills/probate, land records, etc are housed in each parish's courthouse. You must write to the individual parish clerk and request whatever you're looking for. Each parish charges different prices....but usually it's about $5.00 for certified copies. What particular parishes are you interested in??....I may have their addresses. Hope that helps :o) Kelly Priestly Simsboro, LA Judy Reed wrote: > I apologize to those of you who have received this twice. > I have two requests. Jana My husband descends from the Horn line. His great grandfather was John Williams Horn who was the son of Roland Horn. The Horn family that came to Bienville Parish in 1844 were so intertwined with the Chesnutt and Pouland (Poland) families that it is difficult to research one without researching the others. Here is some of the info I have on the Chesnutt's. Hope it helps. gaytha thompson Nashville TN Charles Chesnutt was listed in the 1820 Sampson Co. NC census with his wife and 3 children. In this census living nearby was Jacob Chesnutt and his family---and is believed to be Charles King's parents adn younger brothers and sisters. Charles Chesnutt , his wife and 6 children, are enumerated in the 1830 Thomas Co. Ga census. The 3 youngest children were born in Ga in 1823, 1828, 1830 The Charles chesnutt family was listed in the 1840 Irwin Co. Ga census. By 1840 two of his older children had married. It is through these census records that charles King's birth is placed in 1795, probably in Sampson Co. NC and his wife's birth in 1797. Their oldest child was born in 1814 and it is believed they married ca 1812 Charles King died in Dec 1840 and his probate is on file in Irwin Co. GA in which his wife, Sarah, and their 6 children are listed. His oldest child, Henry William and a son in law, William Wyatt Poulan, were two of the administrators of the estate. An article written on "Judge W. W. Poulan" and published in the Georgia Genealogial Quarterly in 1954 gave the burial place of Charles King and Sarah Pew Chesnutt at the Chesnutt Cemetery in Worth Co. GA on land known at the time as the Chesnutt Place, later called the Watson Place. Their graves are unmarked. Nothing is known of Sarah Pew's parents. She was listed in the 1850 Irwin Co. GA census with her oldest daughter, Mary Ann, who was unmarried, and her 3 youngest children, Jacob, Charles King and Walter Marley. Sarah was probably deceased by Dec 1854 when these three youngest children sold their part of land that is believed to have been part of the home place. Shadrick Pew and his family were listed in the 1830 Thomas Co. GA census, living very close, if not next door, to the Charles Chesnutt family, and is undoubtedly some realtion of Charles King's wife, Sarah Pew. Shadrick Pew was also enumerated in the 1820 Sampson Co. NC census. The first census of the United States was taken in 1790. In the 1790 Sampson Co. NC census many Chesnutts are enumerated and are all believed to be realted. Charles King Chesnutt's father, Jacob, was one of 10 children, and the 4th child, born to Charles Chesnutt and his wife Juliana Driver Chesnutt ca 1760. Jacob's father Charles was born ca 1725 probably in Isle of Wight Co. VA. Charles and several of his brothers are believed to have moved to Duplin Co. NC (now Sampson Co.)---to an area called Six Runs Creek in the 1750's. The first Chesnutt that came to Isle of Wight Co. was Alexander chesnutt who recieved a grant of land in 1683, and was deceased by 1690 when his wife remarried. Jacob's father, Charles, is not found in the 1790 Sampson Co. census, and is believed to be deceased by that time. However, a brother, Charles, was enumerated in this census with his wife and some of his children, as wellas, other brothers and sisters. The first or second given name of King that has been handed down to a number of male decendants of Charles King Chesnutt has possibly been derived from the maiden name of the mother of Charles Chesnutt (who married Juliana Driver) or from the Driver family???? This is all very hazy and bears more research. A number of descendants of these Chesnutts that came to Duplin/Sampson Co. NC in the 1750's lived the Clinton NC area in 1994 In a message dated 9/14/1999 2:22:59 PM Central Daylight Time, LABIENVI-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: << Looking for information about the ancestors and descendants of CHARLES KING CHESNUTT & his wife, SARAH PEW. I apologize to those of you who have received this twice. I have two requests. First of all, where in Louisiana do we write if we want copies of birth or death certificates, or marriage licenses? How far back do they go and what is the fee? Secondly, I'm wondering if someone who has a copy of the History of Bienville Parish, I or II would be willing to do a lookup and let me know if there are any HORTMANS, WILKERSONS, OR NEWTONS mentioned in the book. My great grandfather, William Henry Hortman married Laura Wilkerson there in 1878. While I have a little info on the Wilkersons, I have virtually nothing on the Hortmans prior to William Henry and know very little about him. I know he was born in Bossier Parish in 1852, and his mother was Elizabeth Newton, but do not know his father's name. I do not even know what William Henry Hortman did for a living. He died at Caddo Parish in 1920 and is buried in Bisteaneau Cemetary in Bienville Parish. Does anyone know what newspaper was there at that time that I might be able to get an obituary from? I am from Michigan and do not have immediate access to the historical societies there. Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated! Thank-you, Judy Reed al ñ
Dear Judy: I am unable to do any lookups for you, but I hope someone on the list can help you. I just wanted to be sure you got a response because sometimes the list is quiet. You might want to phone Billy Gene Poland, the woman who compiled Vols. I and II (she is in the processing of compiling Vol. III). She might look something up for you. If you would like to do that, email me and I'll send you her phone number privately. Good luck with your research. Listers, I talked to Billie Gene Poland a couple of months ago regarding the books and putting info from them on the Bienville Parish web pages. There are no more copies of Vol. I to sell and no more can be made. There are a few copies of Vol. II which are $75 each. There are very few of them, but more may be printed at a later date if the need arises. She is in the process of getting Vol. III ready for the publishers now. You might check with her to see if it's too late to send your info to her to have it included in the book. I will be putting some of the info from Vol I on the Bienville Parish site as soon as I get it typed up. Lynelle
Hello. I have also spoken with Billie Gene Polland a few times in the past several month. I have submitted my HUDSON genealogy to her for inclusion in Vol. 3 and am in the process of completing my BLANCHARD line so she can include that as well. She appreciates receiving photographs, too. She does not have a computer or availability to the internet. She is typing the book the old fashioned way! She did a commendable job on the first two volumes. Good luck to all!
