Since Martha Owen, Lynelle Stevenson and I practically tied in asking for Bienville Parish, we are all going to do it together. They both live in the Shreveport area and have already contributed a lot of records to the web site. We hope to add a lot more. If you have any wills, Bible records, deeds, obits, etc, that pertain to Bienville Parish, our gracious listowner, Peggy, is the addminstrator for those GenConnect boards, now listed on the Bienville site. Hello everybody! My great great grandfather, John B. Markham, was stabbed to death by a Mr. Morris at Morris' home near Minden. The judge let Morris go scot free. Killed by a jealous husband? I do not know. This happened around February 1856. There was a very short mention of it in a collection of newspapers someone found in the San Antonio library. I believe Minden was in Bienville Parish in 1856. The newspaper said that both men were from Claiborne Parish. But Markham was an early landowner in Bienville and his estate was settled in Bienville in 1857. Markham's widow, Sarah E. Upshaw Markham, was in Bell County Texas by 1865. Her brother, James Upshaw, was the sheriff of Bienville Parish for awhile. I would really like to know where John B. [Bunyon?] Markham is buried. I would also like the burial place of his father-in-law, John Upshaw. John Markham was born about 1819, married Sarh in Noxubee Co Miss in 1843, probably had brothers, Nimrod Markham, and James C. Markham. David dmorgan@efn.org David W. Hi to all, The Bienville Parish USGenWeb page has been updated and is now being maintained by David Morgan. Take a look at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~labienvi/ He has graciously added links to the mailing list and GenConnect Boards, along with links to many other items that pertain to Bienville Parish and Louisiana. I think that all of you will enjoy what he has done with the site. My best to all of you, Peggy
Thanks very much for the Carter and Raborn Cemetery records. Some of these people I can place, and others I have never heard of, but I am sure that one day they will help. Also, thanks, Peggy for the info on Sherrod Raborn. He was another uncle, and I thought he had died in Mississippi. Cynthia **** Cynthia's Genealogy World http://pw2.netcom.com/~samples
Hi Doris, I did a little digging around in Eva Loe McDuffie's book about Liberty Hill, and found a Susan Scoggins Cason listed in the back of the book. (didn't mention Frances' name in the back) Anyway, when I read about Susan, it mentioned Frances. Here's the jest of it: Edwin Poole b 1854 at Brush Valley married Ursula Meribus Cason b 1857 in AL. Ursula was the daughter of John Cason c. 1805 and Frances Scoggins, daughter of ? and Susan Scoggins. After John's death, she married O.M..... By the way, when I was in LA last week, took a picture of OM's and Maranza's tombstone, will send it to you or can scan it for you when I get it developed. Take Care, Peggy
Hi Cynthia, I have my mother-in-laws copy of the book that her cousin, Eva Loe McDuffie wrote about Liberty Hill - Brush Valley area of Bienville Parish. She mentions the Sherwood Raborn family, stating that he was born in 1811 in Mississippi. His wife's name was Sarah and they had the following children: Permelia b. 1833 in MS, Leatha b 1835 in LA, Angeline b 1837 LA, James b 1839 LA, Emily b 1841 LA, Nancy b 1843 LA, Columbia b 1845 LA, and Henry b 1847 LA. She also mentions a Samuel Raborn, who married Maria Fouts, they moved to TX. She goes on to say that Henry married Martha Whitley b 1859 at Liberty Hill, and they moved to Navasota TX. She didn't have any further info on them, nor does she mention Elzy Raborn, or any of the Carter family. Hi Cynthia, Which Raborn family members are you looking for? Peggy
Thanks Peggy, With the info you just gave me, I have located Willie Edwin and Ursula M POOLE buried in New Liberty Hill Cemetery. We never know what a tidbit of information can sometimes do to help......
Well aren't you just the greatest!! Thanks so much for your help, Peggy. I would love to have a copy of the headstone pictures. Would be happy to reimburse you for the expense. Isn't it amazing how our "gut instincts" help out in genealogy. Just knew the burial info had to be of my Frances Cason. Still don't understand why she was buried with the name of her 1st husband, but guess the answer to that will come in time. Since she died later than O M, maybe her daughter wanted it that way for some reason. Of course, she also had children while married to O M. Thanks again. Some of the nicest people in the world are working on genealogy. <grin>

I am looking for the gravesite of my ggrandfather, Henry Y. Carter, who died in Bienville Parish in 1885. Two of the places they lived were Sparta and Brush Valley. I have been to the Sparta Cemetery and walked through and couldn't find anything. I couldn't find Brush Valley on the map. If you run across anything I would appreciate your letting me know. I am researching Carter and Raborn families. Both moved to Bienville from Pike County, MS. Thanks, Cynthia -- **** Cynthia's Genealogy World http://pw2.netcom.com/~samples
Does anyone have information on a Frances CASON who married Orian Moses COLLINSWORTH in Bienville about 1864? They were listed on the 1870 Bienville Parish Census and it appears that she was previously married because of a daughter listed as Ersula aged 14(who doesn't belong to Orian). Her mother Susan was also listed on the 1870 as well as the 1880 census in the household. I located in the listing of Little Hope Cemetery (near Lucky, Hwy 4 & 9) CASON, Frances Scoggin, born 02/19/1827, died 02/09/1899. Found no other CASON on any of the listings. My Frances Cason Collinsworth would have been born in 1827 according to her ages shown on the census records. Orian was buried near his 1st wife, Maranza Loe Collinsworth in Old Liberty Hill Cemetery in 1890. Can anyone provide a puzzle piece that fits?
Hope none of you mind the replies coming to the list. I am thinking we might be able to help someone who is sitting silently by if we come up with some information for each other.
Hi Karen, Sorry, did not find a Mabry in any of the Cemetery lists. I sure am glad these books are full of COLLINSWORTH and their connecting lines or I would be feeling like I didn't get my money's worth. Will be happy to help any time.
Hi Cynthia, Checked all the listings for your Henry Y. CARTER. Did not locate him listed in any cemetery. There is a Potts Cemetery located at Brush Valley, according to the books, but no Carter listed there at all. Did notice some Carter and Raborn/Raburn listed in some of the cemeteries. If you need others, let me know.
Just wanted to make the list aware that I just today received "Bienville Parish, Louisiana Cemetery Records", Vols. 1, 2, and 3. If any of you need a look-up, I will be happy to do it for you. There is no index, so if the family is normally in a given cemetery, let me know which one such as Bistineau, Old Sparta, etc. If you don't know, I still will try to help. Just might take a little longer. Please post your families. We might have a connection out there. I am looking for information on COLLINSWORTH and JORDAN in the Bienville area. Good luck, Doris

Would sure like to hear from some of the other family names on this Bienville list. Where are you? Who were your ancestors? Received this from another list. Thought you might enjoy: THE RECORDING OF A CEMETERY BY THELMA GREENE REAGAN Today we walked where others walked On a lonely, windswept hill; Today we talked where others cried For Loved Ones whose lives are stilled. Today our hearts were touched By graves of tiny babies; Snatched from the arms of loving kin, In the heartbreak of the ages. Today we saw where the grandparents lay In the last sleep of their time; Lying under the trees and clouds - Their beds kissed by the sun and wind. Today we wondered about an unmarked spot; Who lies beneath this hollowed ground? Was it a babe, child, young or old? No indication could be found. Today we saw where Mom and Dad lay. We had been here once before On a day we'd all like to forget, But will remember forever more. Today we recorded for kith and kin The graves of ancestors past; To be preserved for generations hence, A record we hope will last. Cherish it, my friend; preserve it, my friend, For stones sometimes crumble to dust And generations of folks yet to come Will be grateful for your trust.
Have seen several cemetery listings in Bienville Parish on GenWeb. Does anyone know if there are listings online anywhere for the Liberty Hill and/or Providence Cemeteries in Bienville Parish? I would love to have information on them if available. Thanks, Doris
