Last year I drove out to where my mother said they lived when they was kids. There is Gill's and Smith all out there, I was told of a lady that was the widow of Nancy's brother. I did find several land records in Vernon Parish Court house, with Sim and Nancy. Sim sold and bought land from Smiths, Gills, McMullen. I didn't have long to look at the time. But I haven't had the time to take it any futher. I want to find any elders where Sim and Nancy are buried, he was a pastor there. Do you have other family history, do you have any old bibles, pictures, etc? Do you know anything about William Sim's Parents? I found Sim in the Gill household at the age of 3 and 13 on cencus. I was told that Sim's father was a stow away from Irland, and that is why there is no record of him. I've spoke to people on the net that lives in Irland, they said that the country is full of McMullen family. Do you know why Simeon Gill was raising Williams, etc? If I find any more infomation, I'll let you know. James

DeRidder woman donates collection to MSU library (1/26) By SHAWN MARTIN <<A HREF="mailto:smartin@americanpress.com">mailto:smartin@americanpress.com</A>> AMERICAN PRESS McNeese State University's Frazar Memorial Library is the recipient of the American State Papers, a collection of documents that preserves executive and legislative writings from the archives and manuscript records of the United States Senate and House of Representatives. The original 38 volumes were published by Gales and SEATO from 1832 to 1861 under authority of Congress. Southern Historical Press printed the ASP collection, the Grassroots of America and a computerized index of records from 1789 to 1837. DeRidder's Velmer Smith made the donation to the library. Volumes one through eight cover land claims on public domain of the United States. Volume nine pertains to claims against the government usually not related to land. Nearly 80,000 diverse claims to land from 1789 to 1837 offer genealogical and historical data such as ages of claimants, previous places of habitation and names of children, spouses and other relatives. The works also gives exact locations of claims and the time period of "cultivation and habitation." Smith said the collection contains "genealogical riches." Each volume is indexed. The index in Grassroots combines individual indexes into one directory of surnames, making it is easy to track individuals and/or family members through one or more volumes. For example, Smith said those interested in the name Hickman in Beauregard Parish can use the works to trace their family roots. In this case, that trace would lead to Theopelous and William Hickman, who received land grants in the area known as the "No Man's Land" during the time of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Land grants and claims in the ASP are private claims on public domain obtained by the United States from British, Spanish or French authorities. Smith said the ASP embraces claims based on titles issued by those governments and settlements without foreign grants that were later authorized by various statutes. Each claim had to be proven and verified to be recognized by the United States, regardless of its origin. This was essential because of the disputes involving "No Man's Land" in the Louisiana territory that was not resolved until 1821. The government was required to validate private land claims granted by earlier French, Spanish and British governments in the public domain states before title could be granted under the public land laws, Smith said. Various commissions were established to evaluate these claims and act upon them, with many actions ending in federal courts. Indian claims had to be adjudicated before title could be granted under the public land laws. In addition, a myriad of conflicts arose for settlers filing entries, often resulting in private land claims being presented directly to Congress for resolution. "It is an excellent source for the identification of the prehistoric Atakapas Indian tribe's ownership of lands prior to claims by the Europeans," Smith said. The ten-volume set of the ASP makes family data accessible that formerly was unavailable to many researchers. "These books span an early period of American settlement and opens new opportunities in areas where data is often difficult to find," she said The ASP often does not provide full family information, but furnishes stepping stones that lead to other research possibilities, Smith said. The data, when combined with other sources, may track the movement of people and families from colonial America to the West. "Every family researcher with possible roots in early America should consult the papers in the course of their investigations," she said.

I am looking at a photo of Samuel Flurry (1885-1969 and Annie Hodges Mitchel (1899-1973) made in 1956. The photo includes: children - Lillian Mae (1907-1999), Ruth Aline (1911-1986), William Henry (1917- ), Samuel Grover 1922-1980), Quida Lea (1924- ) and Jacquith Eloise (1930-1998). Sam's daughter, Ruth Aline, had a set of twins that I grew up with. Sam's place was adjacent to my grandfather Robert N Ware's place. Both properties were bordered by Hickory Creek Branch, about 2 miles west of Frank Cole's store located on Hwy 171. The twins, Lany and Lacy went to school there in Ragley. I was born on my grandfather's farm (my mother was Lillian E Ware (1926-1986)). Grandma Sina Maybelle Cooley Ware helped raise me until my mother's marriage in 1948. Her first husband was Jimmy Edwards of Ragley who died in WWII. I am directly related to the Hodges, Cooley's, Ware's and Mitchell's (and many more!!!). I actually went to school in Gillis and Moss Bluff, just south of Ragley in Calcasieu Parish. I have a contact name for the Mitchell family section of the book entitled, "Early Settler's of Ragley (1800-1925 Vol 1). The book is almost 400 pages. Contact Regina Jackson at (337) 786-3797. If you do, please let her know how to reach me as well. God bless you and yours, MIke One more note: Grandpa Ware's dad, James Collin Ware married Arminta Mitchell, daughter of Merida J MItchell and Melissa Jane Slaughter. I carry GG "Collie's" middle name and was born 2 yrs before his violent death. I am certain that Charles and Merida came from Hinds County, Mississippi, as did my ggrandfather. GG Collie came to Ragley in 1880. Merida married in MS and moved to Cameron, La where he lost his young wife and 2 small children in a hurricane (about 1866 or 1867). Feel free to contact me at michaelsr.harrison@attbi.com or 972-691-0911 here in Flower Mound, Tx (north of Dallas). My wife, Connie, and I have raised all three of our children here and now enjoy 1 granddaughter and 6 grandsons. Mike Jr and his wife lost little Ethan Michael when he was born in 1996. Would love to hear from you... I am retired and am home all the time.
