    1. Photos/ Why Avoyelles? / Kohler family
    2. David Kohler
    3. Hi everybody, I have just joined the list. I wonder if some kind person could answer some questions for me. Sorry if they seem naive. 1. Where I could get/see old photos of Avoyelles Parish, especially around Echo around 1880-1900? I'd love to see what it looked like. 2. Two of my ancestors, William & Ernest Kohler, emigrated from French-speaking Alsace directly to Avoyelles Parish around 1880-1890. I'm wondering why they chose Avoyelles. Was that area well-known at the time, for being receptive to French immigrants? Or did they, perhaps, already have relatives in the parish? 3. How I can find more info about an ancestor of mine: WILLIAM KOHLER? He was born in Alsace (under the name Guillaume Kohler) in 1853 or 1854, and he's supposed to have entered the USA about 1872 (maybe using the name William Kohler which is the one he used in the US), but I can't find him in Ancestry's Immigration database. He married Angelica Rabalais in Avoyelles Parish in 1874, and died in Avoyelles Parish in 1887. I'm interested learning absolutely anything about him, including copies of the official records of his immigration, marriage and death. 4. How can I find similar info about his brother Ernest (born Charles Ernest Kohler in Alsace but he called himself Ernest in the USA)? He became a US citizen on 14 Oct 1901. The application for citizenship states that he moved to the United States from Alsace in 1880 when he was 17 and that he had resided continuously in Louisiana since 1880. I can't find him in Ancestry's Immigration database either, but he does appear on the 1900 census in Avoyelles Parish. Thanks very much, David Kohler Palo Alto, CA
