Hello Fellow Ascension Parish, LA Researchers! Seems like we haven't had much activity on the list since its inception, so I thought I'd lay some ground rules regarding roll calls and see if we can't get something started. First, for those of you who are new to genealogy and don't know what a roll call is, here is an explanation: A roll call is where you post the names of your MOST WANTED surnames, with a little bit of information about that surname. Example: John Bourgeois - 1850 - Gonzales, LA The ground rules are this: 1. Your "subject" line must contain at least one surname that you are researching. 2. The body of your message must contain the surname listed in the subject line and list ONLY basic information as shown above. 3. The message must contain no signature or tag lines at the end. 4. All surnames in the message must have a connection to Ascension Parish, Louisiana. With these things in mind, I'm willing to give this a try and see if we can't generate some conversation. On your marks......get set.......GEAUX!
I am researching the descendants of Pierre DUPLESSIS (b. 1831 d. 1897). I am descended through his daughter, Mary Cecile (b. 1862). Look forward to hearing from others who are on this line. Margie
I am searching for family members of the brother of my direct line, Louis Albert BABIN through his older brother, Joseph Alexander BABIN (B. 18 Mar 1838) and married Marie Evelina LANDRY in 1860 in Ascension Parish. I know they had a son named Paul Oscar (b.1864) and a daughter named Alice Adele (b. 1871). This is all I have been able to find. I would like to contact any of their descendants. These two brothers were the only whole siblings of Nichols BABIN and Marie Antoinette BRAUD. All listed were born and died in Ascension Parish.
Thanks everbody for the replies on the above name. It was a lot of help Vance
That sounds abt. right. Her husband Jiseph Cariere listed in 1745 La. Historical records. Vance

I am looking for information about siblings and descendents of Adam Marie GUEDRY (b. 1839) & Felicite Mary Veleda BRAUD (m. June 26,1867 in Ascension). My wife, Judith HELMS is descended from their son Henery Joseph GUEDRY through her mother, Henery's youngest daughter Marie Caroline. We are also interested in siblings and descendents of Henery Joseph's wife, Eugenie ROCH (m. Dec. 6, 1894), and her parents Augustin ROCH & Francis MAYO.
Yet another question from Pittsburgh! First of all, thank-you to all who sent information regarding the interpretation of Baton Rouge Diocese Catholic Church Records! It really cleared things up for me! You all are a great resource! Now, I have another question...I have run across information that indicates that some of my ancestors were put in a camp at Snow Hill, Maryland for awhile after expulsion from Canada and before being allowed to travel on to Louisiana. Are there any resources on these "camps" where our ancestors were forced to stay and work? Evidently, there were several of these "camps" along the eastern seaboard. Has anyone explored this topic much, and if so, where might I look for these records? Heidi Streetman

A few are as follows: ASC is Ascension Church in Donaldsonville, Ascension Civil Parish. SMI is St Michael Church in Convent, St James Civil Parish (St Martinsville Church is in the Diocese of Lafayette, not Baton Rouge). SGA is St Gabriel Church in St Gabriel, Iberville Parish. SJA is St James Church in St James, St James Civil Parish. ASM is Assumption Church in Plattenville, Assumption Civil Parish. PCP is St Francis Church of Pointe Coupee and later St Francis Church of New Roads, Pointe Coupe Parish. SJBR is St Joseph Church in Baton Rouge. There are several others which I can send if you need them. Greetings from Pittsburgh! I am using the Baton Rouge Diocese Catholic Church Records to trace my ancestors in Louisiana. At the end of each entry for each name, I find a little reference to the original record. Some of these are easy to decipher, but some are not, and no key is provided. For example, "ASC" is Ascension Parish. However, I have begun to wonder if SMI is St. Martin or something else. What is SGA? I have just begun to run across this abbreviation in the early volumes. So, if anyone out there has a minute, would you be so kind as to tell me for certain how to interpret SMI and SGA????? I would really appreciate it! Clueless in Pittsburgh, Heidi Streetman

I too would be interested in any source materials on the settlements, especially the one in Valenzuela where my family is from. You are probably already aware of the volume Canary Islanders of Louisiana by Gilbert C. Din published by LSU press. There is also the Islenos Center in Chalmette which has some materials for sale. They have an annual Islenos Festival too.
