    3. I am searching for information concerning the parents of my great-grandfather Charles Francis O'MALLEY who was born December 3 1876 in Donaldsonville, Ascension Parish, Louisiana. His parents were Thomas O'MALLEY/O'MALEY and Mary BURK/BURKE. He had a brother Patrick O'MALLEY, who was born November 23, 1878. I found Thomas and Mary in the 1870 Census. Does anyone know where they were born, who their parents and siblings were, and whether the brother Patrick had children. Charles O'Malley came to Las Vegas New Mexico as a telegraph lineman right around the turn of the century, married Augusta FLECK, and stayed there for the rest of his life. He was a wonderful man of many accomplishments, and I would love to find his family. Our stories say that his parents died before he came West, of broken hearts after they lost everything to a flooding of the Mississippi River. I think they had levies or something. And that's about what I know. Can anyone help? Thanks, Anne Ogle-Leonard ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    3. Dear List Members, This may be old news to most of you, but I didn't know until recently that the Archdiocese of New Orleans and Save Our Cemeteries are providing security in some cemeteries for All Saints' Day. As I understand it, there will be security at Lafayette No. 1 & 2, St. Joseph, St. Louis 1 & 2, St. Roch, and St. Vincent de Paul (uptown). This will give us a chance to go into some of the cemeteries which are difficult to visit the rest of the year for safety reasons. Have a good holiday weekend! I think that I will hold off on subscribing until I receive news that folks who are members are getting the newsletter and memberships for which they sent in their money! When things change, please let me know! Thank to everyone who replied. You all be safe and smart with regards to that hurricane! My prayers are with you. Heidi

    1. DANTIN DANTIC
    2. DJames Adams
    3. Does anyone have information which might explain a relationship with the DANTINs & DANTICs? This is a portion of a recent letter from myself to the LaFourche Hereitage Society Dear Sir; To clarify the reason for my request, (this was a request asking that the Society place a folder labeled, DANTIN/DANTIC next to their DANTIN folder). My Mothers maiden name was DANTIC. When I began searching my tree, the first day I easily found my Grandfather, Gr Grandfather and Gr Gr Grandfather (Paul DANTIC). The last one I found in a US Census 1820, Madison County, Ky.. This document established that he was an un-naturalized Foreigner. Further investigation shows he wed in June 1819 with parental consent, of Hazzard WOOD for the bride, Lucinda WOOD. My Mother knew only that, the DANTICs came from France and that, " A man and two sons came without a woman accompanying them". I was never to find further trace of this family in Ky, and after a fruitless effort, I posed the question to myself, Where would I go if I were a French speaker and unhappy in Kentucky? The answer was Louisiana, of course! The following gets more to the point asto my request for help: Those in Item A, were previously DANTINs. Item A, 1840 US Census, Bayou LaFourche. Paul DANTIC Joseph DANTIC F. DANTIC In the La. index one of these men was referenced as Dantie(or unsure) Further research: Item B1, 1820 US Census, Bayou LaFourche. Louis DANTON, ( Father) Charles DANTON Louis DANTAN (Son) Item B2, 1820 US Census, Bayou LaFourche. Baptiste DANTAN Joseph DANTAN Item C 1, 1830 US Census, Bayou LaFourche. Charles DENTIN Item C 2, 1830 US census, Bayou LaFourche. Joseph DENTEN Baptiste DENTEN 1850 US Censuses and thereafter: This Family name is spelled DANTIN. DANTAN & DANTON in the 1820, DENTIN in the 1830, DANTIC in the 1840 and DANTIN in the 1850 & thereafter. I easily understand the problems of phonetics which confronted the census takers of the era, however I can not imagine a phonetic error that would produce Dantic( pronounced as dan-tik) . This is my first inquiry to this post. I greatly hope someone can help. Jim Adams Miami Fl

    1. Wall vaults at St. Louis 2 & 3 cemetaries
    2. Mr. Boudreaux, I am writing on behalf of individuals who have families buried in the St. Louis 2 & 3 cemeteries, I understand why the renovation has to take place, cemeteries get old and need to be refreshed again. But I implore you before this is ever to take place, to please do you upmost best to contact relatives who have families buried there. If I had a family member there, I would certainly be most concerned as I feel strongly that a burial spot is scared and should not be destroyed. There is also some historical value here to consider. While I realize the "decay" of the vaults are unsightly to surrounding residents, what about the history that will be destroyed? New Orleans is one of the most historic cities in this country and like no other. It also has a longer history that most cities. I just wanted to share my feelings with you and I pray that you and your office will be able to contact "live" family members of their relatives buried there before this all starts. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Kathie Wilcox LVHS72@aol.com

    3. Subject: Wall Vaults at St. Louis No. 3--The official version Date: Fri, 19 Jun 1998 22:18:11 -0500 From: ken clay <kclay@bellsouth.net> To: LOUISIANA-ROOTS-L <LOUISIANA-ROOTS-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU>, Ascension Parish Mailing List <LAASCENS-LA@rootsweb.com>, "St. Charles Parish Mailing List" <LASTCHAR-L@rootsweb.com>, "St. John Parish Mailing List" <LASTJOHN-L@rootsweb.com>, "Mr. Mike Boudreaux" <tburnett@archdiocese-no.org> Dear Friends, I sent my e-mail to Mike Boudreaux, Director of Cemeteries for the Archdiocese of New Orleans this morning. I got a call from Mr. Boudreaux at 11. This is the official version of what is going on at St. Louis No. 3: His office was getting complaints from the people who live at Parc Esplanade, a high rise apartment building nearby. The ceilings on the vaults were caving in. The Cemeteries Office started talking to contractors, consultants, etc. They are concerned about safety issues and the high volume of tourists that pass through the cemetery. I said, "No problem, I understand that something has to be done." The renovation is going to be costly. They've decided to renovate two vaults one at a time and start respectfully removing the remains of those who are buried in the old ones. Before their removal, the Cemeteries Office is going to diligently attempt to contact surviving family members. Their hope is that family members will want to buy a vault in the renovated sections for the remains and for future burials. The purchases will be at a discounted rate. How discounted he did not say. Mr. Boudreaux is planning to put the remains of those who remain unclaimed into several of the renovated vaults. I guess they will place multiple families together. And they have no plans to destroy any records. He was very admanant about that, almost perplexed that we should even consider that possibility considering all of the work, he and Charles Nolan, the Archdiocesan archivist, are putting into preserving the records. (How are we supposed to know that?) Anyway, he really wanted me to get the word out about what was going on and to encourage anyone who has questions to call him. Office phone: (504)596-3050, fax (504)596-3055, or the e-mail address: tburnett@archdiocese-no.org. Well, I feel better. I still want to find cousins to help decide what needs to be done, another separate vault purchase or what. I'm very glad that we got that straightened out. I don't like to give out wrong information, and I'm sorry about that but I wasn't getting a very careful explanation from the Archdiocese. You don't know how much I appreciate your support and help and concern. The e-mails that you sent are a very good thing because now the Archdiocese knows the depth and breadth of the concern all over the world about these cemeteries and our beloved ancestors. I'm sending Mr. Boudreaux a copy of this e-mail so that he can correct any misconceptions that might still remain. Thanks again so much. If you need anything from New Orleans, please don't hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, your friend, Renee Clay

    1. Wall vaults at St. Louis No. 3 Cemetery, New Orleans

    3. I am looking for anyone with the following surnames who has a genealogical connection to the New Orleans area: GOUGUET, MULHOLLAND, PETIT (through France>Santo Domingo>LA rather than Acadian), JOSSE, MAROTTE, and PAGART. The Archdiocese of New Orleans has planned the demolition of three sections of condemned wall vaults in the St. Louis No. 3 Cemetery within the next few years. Among these wall vaults is one purchased by my gggggrandmother, Rosa Therese Petit Gouguet. There are 12 of our family members, including my gggrandmother and 6 children, buried in this wall vault. (See below.) I am hoping to find other descendants of Rosa's and especially the holder of the deed, so that we may decide what can be done with the remains of our ancestors. This is a very troubling situation. I thought that tombs were sacred places that the family owned forever. Not so. Any plot or wall vault "neglected" for 50 years reverts back to the possession of the owner of the cemetery be that the city or the Archdiocese or whomever. The cemetery is then entitled to resell that property. This is what the Archdiocese plans to do within a few years: tear down three sections of wall vaults and rebuild and resell them. They say the money is to be used to fund restoration of the two sections that will remain for historical purposes.
