Another aspect that I forgot to mention was the listings of Post Offices in La. They were often listed under the name of the person who had a general store in the community, which no longer exists. Call your local postmaster to get the address of where to write for those old listings. I can think of two such instances in Assumption Parish called "Tallieu" another called "Star," and one in Lafourche Parish called "Chula." And you won't find any on a modern map. I searched for years for "Democrat" ARK (where my grandmother was born in 1896), finally found it on a very old map (in St. Francis Co.) but it is now an open field with no houses or anyone living there and even the natives never heard of it when I visited St. Francis County a number of years ago.
