    1. [LA-LGHS-L] A shooting in Vermilion Parish
    2. The following article was taken from the July 5, 1871, issue of the Planters' Banner which took the article from an earlier issue of the Meridional. Sheriff G.B. Shaw was a very effective sheriff who helped to return the Parish to a law-abiding land. He was a crack shot with a shotgun and won several awards at shooting matches around the United States. Sheriff Shaw and his friend, State Representative Paulin Fontelieu, had a duel with pistols in 1874 on the outskirts of Abbeville. Fontelieu was fatally wounded and died not long afterwards. In the 1880s, Shaw, himself, became a State Representative. I have no info on Thomas Theall. "Sheriff Shaw shot Thomas Theall, Thursday night, while attempting to arrest him at the residence of Mr. Solomon Morgan. The ball took effect in the man's side, and may prove fatal. This Theall was arrested some time ago for stealing--gave bonds, and like a model scamp, ran off. We are sorry he got hurt, but it is gratifying to see that our sheriff has the nerve to shoot straight when a culprit attempts to escape justice."

    3. This would be Granville Shaw (middle name probably Berwick), born at Nunez Island LA about 1850 and died 1909. He was the son of John Merriman Shaw b. 1829 d. 1865, and ?. John Merriman Shaw was the son of John C. Shaw and Margaret Rebecca Merriman. John C. Shaw was supposedly born in NC and his wife was born in St. Martins Parish, LA in 1807. She was the daughter of John I. Merriman and Mary Angelica Berwick. Thanks for printing it up. :-) Jan Garland AKDana@aol.com wrote: > > The following article was taken from the July 5, 1871, issue of thePlanters' Banner which took the article from an earlier issue of the > Meridional.
