    1. [LA-LGHS-L] Charles Felix Grimmer
    2. Jim Bradshaw, as usual, you wrote an interesting and informative article that appeared in today's Lafayette Daily Advertiser. This one was about early "coffee makers" in the area. I thought that you might be interested in C.F. Grimmer, whom you mentioned in your article. He was employed in Abbeville as early as 1904. By 1909, Grimmer had opened a grocery store on the corner of State and Lafayette Streets in the building where Kane's Restaurant is presently located. He also ran a restaurant and a saloon in that building. In 1915, Grimmer installed a large coffee roaster in his store, and served his customers "parched" coffee. He ran the roaster by electricity which began to be supplied both day and night to Abbeville's residents that year. Grimmer used gasoline to provide heat for his roaster. He began advertising "Grimmer's Kajion (sic) Coffee" at that time. Seems that he wasn't aware of the spelling of the word "Cajun" at that time. Anyway, his ad stated that his coffee was roasted both morning and noon. Couldn't get much fresher that that. I believe that he was the first in Abbeville to roast coffee for his customers. He moved to Lafayette in 1921 and sold his bakery in Abbeville in 1925. In a 1929 ad, Grimmer stated that he was a "Roaster of Coffee for Particular People." Sounds like a nice slogan. C. F. Grimmer, as he was generally referred to in the newspapers, died at his residence in Lafayette, in 1936, at the age of 64. His obit stated that he had been the owner of the Grimmer Coffee Co. and that he had helped to found the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce. Hope that this information will be helpful to you. Ken Dupuy
