Allen, were soldiers in the confederate army. They were in the Briarfield Rebels commanded by Col. W.F. Slemons. Columbus enlisted in April l861, (the Crescent Rifles Co.A.) in New Orleans and Cicero in June of that year, joining the company at Youngs Mills. They also served under a Gen. Magruder. George McCarroll was their cousin, I believe, and served with them. I have inhereted a portrait (dated approximately 1810-1820 by an appraiser), and as the family was from La. I want to identify the subject. I believe it may be of the grand-father of Cicero and Columbus, and perhaps his name was Stokes. I have a copy of a writing to Col. J. A. Chalaron, chairman of the Southern Historical Committee of Louisian, in l901, by Columbus in which he has written of his experiences while in the Briarfield Rebels. Apparently there was other facts given by a Sgt. Ed. Newman to Col. Chalaron at the same time. I have my ancestors letters plus a bill of sale for a parcel of land in Carroll(?) parrish to Sarah McCarroll by S. D. Oliver on January 8, l863. Cicero died in l868, and was the father of my grandfather, Augustus Cicero Allen. Isn't there a group called the Sons of the Confederacy which might lead me to the names of Cicero and Augustus' father and grandfathers. Any help you might offer would be greatly appreciated! Most sincerely, Mary Allen Stine
