Judy, I've checked McBee and the West Florida Spanish records index, but I don't know about your book. How do I get a copy? As to the will referred to, the child was apparently raised by her father's brother and wife. The wife left a slave to the "natural daughter of John Doe" in a will dated 1814. In a subsequent court action, the uncle acknowledged the slave left by his wife to the "daughter of my brother John Doe." I do have a name--fact or fiction--and there are only a few people, all kin, all male, with that name in Natchez in the 1792 census, as well as in McBee. You're encouraging me to go ahead and follow that lead. Thanks for your help.
