    3. My SCHWARTZ per family tradition were Black Dutch because they were from the Black Forest area of Germany, were Dutch and not Jewish. They changed the spelling to SWARTZ/S after they had been in PA for a generation during Henry Swartz lifetime 1805-1895 of Lackawanna Twsp, Luzerne & Dunmore, Old Forge, Wayne & Falls Twp.Wyoming Cos. PA. I am looking for any info on Harry SWARTZ changed his name to Harry BREWSTER and founded the Brewster Co. of Shreveport, LA. He was married to Lillian Turner of Magnolia, Arkansas and The brother of my Grandmother Laressa Swartz LINDSAY. Harry said he changed from Swartz to Brewster, because folks thought he was jewish and he was not! (I am not so sure about that-not a practicing one anyway.) I think there are several versions of why people labeled themselves Black Dutch. josie At 04:40 AM 9/26/00 -0700, you wrote: > Some took Black Dutch because they were of Indian bood and did not want >to go to the INDIAN RESERVATION .
