Carl A. Brasseaux in Lafayette: An Illustrated History (Windsor Publications, 1990), states, "In 1840, Lafayette Parish was rocked by an abortive slave insurrection, resulting in heightened vigilance on the part of local white in the years preceding the Civil War."
