I found much valuable information about family in visiting the cemetery postings in East and West Feliciana, but I need more detailed locations if you can help: MULFORD CEMETERY on Retreat Plantation. Where is Retreat and what family is it most closely connected to? I am trying to learn more about the COBB family. Sarah MULFORD was a BINGAHAM, first married to Stephen COBB, who was the son of Arthur COBB who was in Natchez District as early as 1783. Early Natchez court records show a son named William and connections with the children of Jedediah SMITH. In the late 1780s, early 1790s Israel, Josephus and Calvin Smith married three COB sisters--Sara (Sallie), Patience and Priscilla--supposedly from Wilkinson County. Sara died early as did her brother-in-law Josephus. Patience married 2nd John BAKER, and they lived in West Feliciana. No one has ever determined who the parents of the COBB sisters were; so all COBB leads help. DOHERTY CEMETERY: Members of the DOHERTY family married descendants of Courtland SMITH of West Feliciana, my ggg-grandfather. Who were the early DOHERTYS and where did they live? Where is the cemetery located? Does anyone know where in West Feliciana the Courtland SMITH cemetery is located? According to the book, The Rev. Henry Smith (Puritan Pastor) and His Family by Brady, SMITH and five sons are buried at his plantation, which was called "The Oaks." Supposedly this was a land grant obtained at the same time his brother Luther got Locust Grove and his friend John BOON[E] also settled in the Felicianas. (Courtland m. 1st Catherine COOPER, 2nd, Narcissa BOON, 3rd, Jane BOON. The Oaks is said to have adjoined Luther SMITH's and BOON's land and to have been located on the west side of Thompson's Creek between St. Francisville and Jackson. There is a house pictured on page 57 In the little book, Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow, published by the Jackson Assembly, that shows Monte Bello, "originally called Oaks Plantation. . . Locally, many of the old times remember it as the Smith place." Is this the family home? And does anyone know the location of the BOON property? I appreciate any and all help. E. W. Prichard
Thanks, Jim, for including my information about Grimmer in your column today. The 1897 Universal Dictionary defines a coffee house as a "house of entertainment where persons are supplied with coffee and other refreshments." Those "other refreshments" in the Acadiana area coffee houses were alcoholic beverages. In 1854, Eugene I. Guegnon was sued by Antoine Raggazoni and Ursin Hebert's widow. Hebert and Raggazoni had owned a coffee house in Vermilionville, "for the purpose of retailing spirituous liquors and of keeping a Billiard Table," according to the lawsuit. Guegnon had run up a huge tab from 1850 to 1853, when a glass of liquor, and a cigar cost 5 cents each; a game of billiards cost 20 cents. Judgment was in favor of the plaintiffs. Guegnon was the proprietor and editor of the Vermilionville Impartial, at that time. He founded the Abbeville Meridional, in 1856. In 1871, Abbeville's town council set its municipal license fees. Coffee houses were to pay $75. The next highest fee, $25, was to be collected from hotels and livery stables. Physicians and attorneys were to pay only $20, which was the same for retail merchants, unless they sold liquor in smaller amounts than "an ordinary wine bottle." In such cases, their fee was the same as for "coffee house keepers." A billiards table in a coffee house cost an extra $10. Acadiana's coffee houses later came to be called saloons, but I don't know when.

Allen, were soldiers in the confederate army. They were in the Briarfield Rebels commanded by Col. W.F. Slemons. Columbus enlisted in April l861, (the Crescent Rifles Co.A.) in New Orleans and Cicero in June of that year, joining the company at Youngs Mills. They also served under a Gen. Magruder. George McCarroll was their cousin, I believe, and served with them. I have inhereted a portrait (dated approximately 1810-1820 by an appraiser), and as the family was from La. I want to identify the subject. I believe it may be of the grand-father of Cicero and Columbus, and perhaps his name was Stokes. I have a copy of a writing to Col. J. A. Chalaron, chairman of the Southern Historical Committee of Louisian, in l901, by Columbus in which he has written of his experiences while in the Briarfield Rebels. Apparently there was other facts given by a Sgt. Ed. Newman to Col. Chalaron at the same time. I have my ancestors letters plus a bill of sale for a parcel of land in Carroll(?) parrish to Sarah McCarroll by S. D. Oliver on January 8, l863. Cicero died in l868, and was the father of my grandfather, Augustus Cicero Allen. Isn't there a group called the Sons of the Confederacy which might lead me to the names of Cicero and Augustus' father and grandfathers. Any help you might offer would be greatly appreciated! Most sincerely, Mary Allen Stine

I am attempting to find information on a Benjamin L. WHITE born approximately 1815. I am told his mother was Elizabeth White. Benjamin left Louisiana in approximate 1823 and moved to Sabine County, Texas; he later become the first sheriff of Trinity County, Texas. Interestingly enough, one of his daughters, Elizabeth Jane White married a son of Jesse James. Any insight or information is greatly appreciated. Amy McCroskie Denver, CO
Hi Benjamin L. White was the son of Reuben White and Elizabeth ?. He was b. @1815, prob in LA, where the family arrived before 1784. Reuben and Elizabeth were from Craven Co. SC, which no longer exists, not far from the highly-mobile NC state line. I guess the area is generally known as Cheraw. Reuben b. 1765 in SC, died prob in Catahoula Parish LA before 1830. Elizabeth b. @1770, died in either Sabine Co. or Houston Co. TX before 1850. I have Benjamin L. listed, so far, as the 7th of 7 kids. There may be some missing. Nancy Matilda White, Reuben b. abt 1793 and d. young, Martin D. White, James Taylor White b. abt 1798, Elizabeth White b. 1805, Reuben b. 1808. It appears that all of them ended up in the Trinity and Sabine Co. TX areas. Two married Earl and Dollarhide family members. Benjamin L. White m. ? (she d. bef 1847, it appears) and they had at least five kids, Elizabeth Jane abt. 1838, William Thomas 2/24/1840, Jamese Augustus b. 2/5/1844, Nancy A. b. 1845, Matilda b. 1747. Perhaps others. Back to Reuben again...His father was James White b. abt 1736 in VA d. abt 1784 in Natchez, MS. His mother was Jerusha, believed to be a Davenport family member but it's not proven, b. VA abt 1740. She would be the sister to Sophia Davenport, wife of William White, Reuben's brother. James and William were two of six children belonging to James Taylor White and Elizabeth Powe. The genealogy of their family was covered in a highly-researched book by Gifford White, which is where this data is from, for the most part. I'm related to the White family through a couple White cousins and also the Dunman family, who were also cousins. Jan G. AmyWM@aol.com wrote: > > I am attempting to find information on a Benjamin L. White went from LA to Sabine County, TX with his mother about 1823; was in Cherokee County, TX by 1845 and Houston/Trinity Counties, TX by 1850. I suspect Benjamin L. White could have been from St. Helena Parish because of the Richardsons, Womacks and Watson names. A lot of those same families ended up in Trinity County, TX. Amy McCroskie Denver, CO
