    2. josie bass
    3. My SCHWARTZ per family tradition were Black Dutch because they were from the Black Forest area of Germany, were Dutch and not Jewish. They changed the spelling to SWARTZ/S after they had been in PA for a generation during Henry Swartz lifetime 1805-1895 of Lackawanna Twsp, Luzerne & Dunmore, Old Forge, Wayne & Falls Twp.Wyoming Cos. PA. I am looking for any info on Harry SWARTZ changed his name to Harry BREWSTER and founded the Brewster Co. of Shreveport, LA. He was married to Lillian Turner of Magnolia, Arkansas and The brother of my Grandmother Laressa Swartz LINDSAY. Harry said he changed from Swartz to Brewster, because folks thought he was jewish and he was not! (I am not so sure about that-not a practicing one anyway.) I think there are several versions of why people labeled themselves Black Dutch. josie At 04:40 AM 9/26/00 -0700, you wrote: > Some took Black Dutch because they were of Indian bood and did not want >to go to the INDIAN RESERVATION . Rose was an engineer involved in the construction of sugar machinery and became the state chemist for Florida, Sanford had a sugar Plantation (Oakley, but I am not sure in what part of Louisiana) and I am not sure what Ingraham did in your state. All three became instrumental in the development of Florida, specifically as related to railroads and drainage. Any information or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Barbara

This is the only compilation of Italians only to this port. Vol. contains 44 passenger lists, vol. 2 contains 22 lists, and vol. 3 will consist of over 55 lists. The CDs consist of three formats and an A-Z index. All lists give names, age, marital status, occupation, native country or town, and final destinations of about 40, 000 Italian family members who came to settle in this area. Also included are the names of those deported, were ill, runaways, stowaways, newborns, and those who died on the passage and the cause of death. The lists also name the masters of each ship and the sources of the microfilm from which the data was copied. The lists give the ports of departures and other ports the ship may have visited. These CDs are a complete record of all the Italians who came to New Orleans and then settled throughout the state of Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and those who went to other areas. The cost of the first CD is $40, postpaid. Vol. 2 and vol. 3 cost $35 each, postpaid. 1. [LA-LGHS-L] Correction
    2. I sent the article below, about the Franklin Reading Room, several months ago, and now I’m updating and correcting it. As many of you are aware, I’m a stickler for accuracy of historical data. I couldn’t tolerate not correcting some errors that I sent in this email. While I'll be talking about Franklin's Reading Room, the main reason for relaying this information is because one of the members of the list is related to Dr. Fassitt. It was the doctor's contribution to the Reading Room that caught my attention. The Reading Room was active and a part of the cultural scene by at least 1848, and probably long before that. It was a privately owned library, and was owned by the Planters' Banner, and Robert Wilson, proprietor and editor of that newspaper. Wilson is one of several “local” adventurous individuals who left in late 1848, for the gold rush in California. I wonder if any Vermilion Parish residents were struck by the gold fever and traveled to California. For the use of the Reading Room, there was a fee involved. By subscription it cost $5 a year, or one could pay fifty cents a month. For “strangers,” use of the library was free, for one week. Use of the Reading Room was also free for subscribers to the Banner who lived “10 miles and over” from Franklin, La. Like a regular library, it contained the usual volumes upon volumes of books, recent papers and, in 1848, it housed 12 years worth of bound issues of the Planters' Banner. There was also the latest Atlas of North America, “nearly all of the leading journals and periodicals of the Union,” Chess tables, numerous reference works, etc. In addition to these and other items, there was a sort of museum of natural history. It is in this regard that this email is being sent. Below is the item, copied mostly verbatim from the Planters' Banner about the Reading Room. On 5-18-1848, in an article titled "More Curiosities" We are indebted to Mr. Robert B. Royster, of the Centreville Academy, for a very beautiful Ocelot skin from Texas, and to Dr. Fassitt of Centreville, for minerals from Ohio, and shells from Mississippi. Also, to Dr. Hawkins, for some shells collected by him in Texas. Messrs. Orien Carlin and A. Mortimer Salles have sent us a very splendid living rattlesnake. We beg friends to remember us when you visit the sea shore [the Gulf of Mexico was then referred to as the sea. For example, the steamships or boats that went to New Orleans by way of the gulf were said to take the "sea route."] We are promised some valuable fossils from Tennessee in exchange for shells from Louisiana." About this time, May 1848, a mounted Bald Eagle was placed in the Reading Room. It had been shot by a Mr. Fenn "on the shores of Grand Lake." This body of water is to the east of Franklin and Bayou Teche. In late May 1848, that huge rattlesnake that had been on exhibit in the Reading Room escaped. Naturally, much excitement and concern were stirred up, especially in the vicinity of the Reading Room. On June 1, 1848, a news item appeared about the capture of this runaway snake. It was returned to the Reading Room. It seems to me that those who made use of the Franklin Reading Room certainly got their money’s worth. Ken Dupuy

Born Agnes Bauerle, she was 29 years, 9 months and 12 days old; she married Robert Kemmler on 10 June 1924; he died 14 Feb 1927. One 5 year old child, Dolores Bertha Kemmler. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- I'm searching for the descedants of two brothers John and Jacob Kemmler, who lived in 1891/92 in New Orleans. John was a painter. From Jacob I know, that he has lived separated from the family and worked as a bar tender during that time. I only could locate a directory entry for John in New Orleans. John and Jacob had a cousin, Robert E. Kemmler living in St. Louis, Missouri in 1891/92 from which I have some letters and know a little bit about the relations. Robert E. Kemmler immigrated to the U.S. in 1891 from London, but was born in Reicheneck, Wuerttemberg, Germany. He was looking for two uncles immigrated earlier. He found one of his uncles in Pennsylvannia and the other was the father from John and Jacob. Their father died in 1874. When I read the entries for Robert E. Kemmler, I wondered whether he could be a son of John or Jacob. Perhaps it would be possible to trace the roots back to John/Jacob and their German ancestors. If any one of you have some more information on Robert E. Kemmler and his wife, I would appreciate any help. Kind regards, Ruediger Kemmler Munich, Germany

    1. [LA-LGHS-L] Harrell:
    2. Looking for information on Louis Harrell who married Virlinda Averett in 1836. Have their line to present. Trying to tie him to Lewis Harrell who married Mahatible Bryan in 1816 and Parmela Rentz in 1821 to the other Louis. 1840 Liv. Census shows a Louis Sr. and Louis Jr. living next door to each other in Coyell Liv. Parish. Have found no other concrete evidance to tie these two together. Any inf. would be appreciated.
