1. [LA-LGHS-L] Mardi Gras in Abbeville
    2. Kris, this is an excerpt from one of my articles that appeared in the Meridional several years ago. It should fit your request quite well! Ken The parade we will view in 1902 is a Mardi Gras parade. Until this time, Mardi Gras was barely acknowledged in Abbeville. Generally, our citizens went elsewhere--New Orleans or New Iberia. Thanks to promoters Gaston Levy and Col. Richard Dozier, the celebration took place here in town. In 1901, Mr. Levy had tried to promote a parade, but his was the only float in the parade. On that float was "little Mable Lann riding on top attired in a fairy costume," surely, J. S. Lann's daughter. He was one of our merchants. Also in this fledgling parade, there was "a large body of maskers" who marched down our streets under Levy's command. Evidently the idea of having our own parade took hold in the minds of other Abbevillians and this parade came about in 1902. The celebration was taken seriously and nearly all "business houses" closed at 1:30 p.m. in time for the parade. However, the saloons, fruit stands and drugstores remained open. After all, essential businesses had to be open to supply the public! Mardi Gras, according to the Meridional, was celebrated in Abbeville "more elaborately" that year than ever before. Finally, we are seeing a parade in which one of our own bands, the Abbeville Silver Cornet Band, provided the musical treats. The newspaper didn't go into great detail about this parade. It did state that "the streets were full of people who enjoyed the home production." In this Mardi Gras parade, there were several floats, including Levy's, and Dozier's. Also dazzling the young and the appreciative were wagons and carriages and "the fire apparatus." The vehicles must have been decorated in some way. There were even those who rode by on their horses, and there were pedestrians as well. I trust that the pedestrians marched before and not behind the horses. This February 11th parade, then, had been a bright spot that had made up for a dreary time in Abbeville. Prior to February 15, 1902--when the parade was reported on in the newspaper--there had been only two clear days that month. It would seem that the "cloudy, gloomy, foggy and misty" days had lingered too long, like unwelcome guests sometimes do. We all have them: unwelcome guests. However, before we feel too high and mighty, let's not forget that we, too, are sometimes unwelcome guests! While the newspaper doesn't give us many details, at least we get a sense of what it must have been like at a Mardi Gras parade in Abbeville, almost a century ago. I wonder how many of you who are reading this excerpt had ancestors that participated in or viewed that grand parade! Ken Dupuy

    1. [LA-LGHS-L] Henry Shelto Sanford:
    2. We are a government agency in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and are researching land history in Florida. Several individuals who impacted the development of our state had ties to Louisiana. Henry Shelton Sanford owned a sugar plantation, Oakley, in the 1870s. Another is Rufus Edwards Rose who was born in Louisiana, was an expert on sugar cultivation and became the state chemist for Florida. The third is James Edmondson Ingraham, born in Wisconsin and reported to have come to Florida in the 1870s from Louisiana. Please advise what resources you might have available to track these men or if you have any information you can provide. We have looked at the Oakley Plantation (associated with Audubon) website and no mention is made of Henry Shelton Sanford. Was there more than one Oakley Plantation. Thank you very much for your assistance. Barbara Poleo (Please respond to jous@aol.com)

    2. Hi Patricia, IOOF stands for Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a very old & honorable fraternity. The PG stands for Past Grand meaning he was head of his lodge at some time during his membership. The members are called Brothers, so his obit in the paper would have him listed as such. I am a member of the female branch of the IOOF.....the Rebekahs. You might be interested in the IOOF website at: IOOF Home Page or http://128.125.109.137/IOOF.shtml Joyce

    2. Good Morning Thursday, I got a copy of D.D. Atkinsons obituary at the Orleans Parish Library. I have looked for this to no avail for months. I found it by an accident, but have a question--in it it says Brother P.G.D.D. Atkinson, a loyal member...........of I.O.O.F. It is the right person, the right address, etc, but what does it mean Brother P.G.D.D.? If anyone knows anything about the IOOF maybe they can explain the use of PG--perhaps a title of some sort? Thanks Patricia

Robichaux, Jr. "Civil Registration of Orleans Parish, 1790 - 1833 has 1,016 pages and costs $ 55.00 plus $ 3.00 shipping per book. Please note we cannot at this time accept credit card payments. We have only 500 copies to sell and we are not planning a reprint of this book. About the book: "Before 1990, the civil registrations of Orleans Parish were closed to the general public, but then opened to the public once the transfer occurred to the State Archives. Now, with the publication of "Civil Registration of Orleans Parish, 1790-1833 by Albert Robichaux, the civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths appear for the first time in any published format." "The author has painstakingly abstracted all genealogical and historical data, except reference to legitimacy, for all births, marriages, and deaths that occurred in Orleans Parish between 1790 and 1833. Although registration did not begin until 1819, there were late registrations of 72 births and 24 deaths that occurred between 1790 and 1818." "In total, this work contains more than 2400 entries that include names of parents, their occupations, places of nativity and residence, including specific street addresses as well as similar information for deponents and witnesses. More remarkable is that of the 1528 births included in this book, that occurred from 1790 - 1833, a total of 308, or 20 % include the names of the parental and maternal grandparents, sometimes their places of birth and residence. Although New Orleans and Louisiana are blessed with very detailed Catholic Church records, the civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths provide even more information." "In addition to recording births, marriages and deaths that occurred in Orleans Parish, this book contains registration events that occurred in other countries, states and parishes in Louisiana. Although the book contains names of Frenchmen, Germans, Acadians and Anglo-Saxons, it also contains a wealth of information on families from Santo Domingo and also of African-Americans." You may order by sending a check for $ 58.00 for each book to: Hebert Publications P.O. Box 147 Rayne, LA 70578 Thankyou for your support of Fr. Hebert's work. Jude Huckaby for Hebert Publications
