Shelia: I'm not sure the question was clear............but yes there are actually three places to research in Baton Rouge. The Louisiana State Archives, 3851 Essen Lane; Bluebonnet Library (genealogy section), 9200 Bluebonnet Blvd.; and the Louisiana State Library (Louisiana section), 701 North 4th St. in downtown Baton Rouge. Another good library would be the Hill Memorial Library at LSU (wonderful collection of manuscripts that are indexed in NUCMC) as well as the Howard Middleton Library at LSU. Hill is not a browsing library; library personnel get material for you after you fill out slips :( As to you not knowing the parish of death.......that is not a necessity when searching the death index, but it helps if you are dealing with a common name. Good Luck! Is anyone going to Baton Rouge archives----I have Joseph Istre's death date as 13 Nov 1930 in Duson,Louisiana sanitarium-----All I would need is date of birth and names of his parents to prove which Istre line he goes to-------Crowley did not have a newspaper for Nov 1930---do not know reason for no newspaper-------Thanks Alvenia
Ok, hope I don't sound ignorant. Worked on it as a researcher-for-hire. That why I threw the material away. Yes, they were from Beggs, LA in St. Landry Parish. I went to St. Landry Courthouse and found some things about the family, but can't remember what, CRS I guess (can't remember stuff). Alvenia: Please use your local library! Or at least call your genealogy librarian. We have the index to deaths for LA to 1949. Go see if your man is listed in the index. If he is, then write to the LA State Archives and order a copy of the obit. It cost $5.00 by mail. Or maybe someone in BR can do a look up and send it to you for less. How about it anyone? With the date of death you can also search the newspapers of the area he lived in for an obit. The Crowley paper in on microfilm at McNeese University's Frazaar Library. Alvenia, Our library has the death indexes on microfilm. You can go there and look to see if there was a death cert. Then you can order it from the archives. Dear Sheila: You don't need to know the Parish they died in, they are alphabetized by last name and year of death. They do put the Parish number on the index and it tells you what parish, but all you have to do is copy the year, volume and certificate number, and they pull the correct film for you to view. Lisa
Oh wow I'll keep trying maybe he's under another spelling of name. Lorain
Thanks I actually found him in the1870 census listed as Waston Yeatman
I'm going tomorrow send me the name and date of death I'll send it to you
Karen: Call before you go....I went friday and the microfilm machines all needed "servicing"...could barely read let alone make a copy on them. Lisa
Could anyone tell me how to go about getting the death record on Joseph Istre who died in 1930------Crowley had no newspaper for some of 1930 --relatives do not know who his parents are etc. Can it be gotten at La. Archives? If so please send me more info on how I may obtain it--Alvenia -----Original Message----- From: Karen <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, July 21, 1999 5:10 AM Subject: Re: [LA-LGHS-L] Hebert book lookup >courthouse don't have death rec what yr did he die I'll pull the death >rec from the Archives if before 1949 > > >==== LA-LGHS Mailing List ==== >LGHS: Serving Louisiana Genealogist since 1953. > Visit our website at > http://www.rootsweb.com/~la-lghs/lghs.htm >

Try asking people how to spell the last name. I think that may be part of your problem. Run all the spellings through the BLM and through all the search engines (GenConnect, LaGenWeb, etc.) Like you, I have some Indian or Native American. I wish someone had the time to do the 5 Dawes Rolls (the index) and put them up somewhere on Rootsweb so the search engine could pick it up! Annette
