Would someone please give me the link for Shreve Memorial Library again. Evelyn
Hi Cuz! I spoke to my Mom today because I remembered a Mrs Barras who lived near my grandma when we were young. I remembered eating her homemaid bread!! Our cousin Nello Shay took care of her before she died. I cant recall the year. She didnt have any kids and we dont know if she was kin. Mom said she would get back to me on this. Our cousin Elaine Lemille Powers aunt Eugenia Shay Lemille's daughter is very sick in LA.Calf. Mom is going up there to be with her. Keep her in mind when you pray. I'll get back to you soon. >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: [LA-LGHS-L] Looking for a long lost cousin- BARRAS >Date: Mon, 2 Aug 1999 19:00:12 EDT > > I'm looking for a man by the name of Wilfred Barras >(Barra). Thanks, Cherry. This has been a very frustrating brickwall made even more difficult by the fact that I'm in Central TX and what I need to look at is in LA. Thanks for your ideas. It's given me some direction Charlotte Turner Merrifield
In a message dated 8/11/99 6:24:34 PM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << The slave schedules I've looked at only list the numbers not the names. Is there a way I might find the names? >> Charlotte, According to Tony Burroughs, a nationally renowned instructor on African American Genealogy, the 1850 & 1860 US Census listed names of slave owners only. In a few cases did the census taker make a mistake and listed the slaves by name. If you go back and look at the census schedule instructions, where there are several owners only one is listed. If a person or family employed or rented out a slave then the employing family got credited with the number of slaves, not the real owner. Many small poor farmers rented slaves. They were not the owners. The Slave schedule doesn't prove who the slave owner is. You have to look elsewhere for proof. The schedule can be a guide. If the owning family you are looking for was a large slave owning family, them perhaps a library, history society, university or family may still have some old plantation papers. If you know who the family is, maybe they can tell you who may still have the plantation owner's papers. Bibles, diaries and plantation log books, day books, or personal letters may help. Hope I've helped, [email protected] Baker, LA Researching Southwest Louisiana Parishes surnames of MERCIER, WILTZ, ESCLAVON, DECLOUET, MASSE, JEAN LOUIS, SHAY (CHAIX), GUIDRY, BASILE(CHIASSON), BARRAS, LeBLANC, FONTENETTE, BROUSSARD and HENRY. This is my problem. My 4GGrandfather, Thomas J. HOOPER was married to Mary Henrietta Wells Fulton. I can find all sorts of documentation for the time he spent in LA. On the 1850 census he says he was born in GA. There was a group of Hoopers in GA that moved to TN. I'm trying to find Thomas J.s parents. I believe that he was Churchwell Hoopers son that was named in his will and left his choice of two slaves, Lamb or Lewis. The reason for this assumption is Thomas J. named his only son Churchwell, not a common name. So in order to give some credence to my assumption, if I could find some documentation that named his slaves and there was a Lamb or a Lewis then there would be a link, weak but a link none the less. The slave schedules I've looked at only list the numbers not the names. Is there a way I might find the names? If anyone else has a suggestion, I'm all ears. Thanks, Charlotte Turner Merrifield
I may have made the error below, and I appologize to anyone who it may have offended. I get used to the way we hear things pronounced around this area. Sorry Chris [email protected] wrote: > > Please, people, it's obits not orbits and obituaries, not orbituaries. A "burned county" or in our case in Louisiana a "burned parish" is a county/parish where the courthouse burned and the records were destroyed or partially so. Cindi, East Baton Rouge was created in 1810. I would first check the archives in the basement of the courthouse there. If you do not find it, then I would check the courthouse in Clinton. And, if you don't find it there, try St. Francisville. notsure what you mean by Burned but all the slave sch are avaialbe in the Archives and the Bluebonnet lib here in Baton Rouge
Please, people, it's obits not orbits and obituaries, not orbituaries. Even if you're saying it as a joke, people in other parts of the country may just assume we are dense!
Does anyone know where I can look for a probate record of Nehemiah Powers for 1818, in Feliciana Parish? I know that this parish was divided in 1824 into East and West Feliciana Parishes. I think he lived in what is now East Baton Rouge parish. Which place would have the records? Cindi
I found a new place for orbits and they get posted daily from the Times-Picayune here in New Orleans. www.nola.com/t-p/orbituaries
Could someone tell me whether or not there are slave schedules for the burned parishes in LA, specifically Rapides Parish. Thanks, Charlotte Merrifield
Thanks again. evelyn
