    1. [LA-LGHS-L] Goins
    2. Gene & Pam Tatum
    3. I hope someone out there can be of help. I have been butting my head against a brick wall for too long now. I am in search of my Goins line ancestors. They were in LA, Rapids Parish before moving on to Texas. Prior to this I haven't a clue. I think they may have been dropped down from Mars or Pluto. If anyone out there has ever ran across the surname Goins and has information on it, PLEASE let me know. The one in particular I am looking for is Thomas J Goins b Oct. 1820. He married Rebecca the first marriage, I think, then Harriet. He was in the war, a POW out of Rapids Parish and I have a list of children. I will refrain from boring all of you with the details until this tidbit jogs someone's memory. May I also note that the Goins name is spelled many different ways. Goin, Goen, Gowen, etc. all with or without a s on the end. And I have been a member of the Gowens Research Foundation for years and they have nothing on my line. So if anyone has any suggestions, I would be deeply appreciative. Thanking You In Advance Pamela Goyens Tatum

    1. [LA-LGHS-L] UPDATE: Databases for the Study of Afro-Louisiana History and Genealogy
    2. Hi all, To refresh some of you guy's memory about the CD-Rom of the slave db that Gwen Midlo Hall has authored, I have included more information about it below. It is ready for prepublication orders from Amazon.com at the price of $45 + S&H. If you search the ISBN # on Amazon.com, it will come right up. Databases for the Study of Afro-Louisiana History and Genealogy, 1699-1860 : Information from Original Manuscript Sources by Gwendolyn Midlo Hall (Editor) Software Cd-Rom edition (October 1999) Louisiana State Univ Pr; ISBN: 0807124826 This item will be published in October 1999. Good luck, Cherryl In a message dated 10/8/98 4:11:33 AM Central Daylight Time, GHall1929 writes: << Thanks for the copy of your email re slave data. My database CDROM will appear in early 1999 published by Louisiana State University Press. It will contain detailed information about just about every slave found in documents in Louisiana between 1723 and 1820: 90,330 records each describing an individual slave with about 120 fields (items of information about each slave). About 30,000 of these records give the birthplace. Among these, over 16,000 are born in Africa. Over 10,000 identify the African ethnicity of the slave. A separate emancipations database with information about 3,900 individual manumissions will be included. There will also be a number of census databases by myself and other scholars covering the colonial and ante-bellum period (through 1860). These are almost all Louisiana documents, but there are a few colonial censuses of Mobile and Pensacola as well. For more information, contact Louisiana State University Press. They should have a leaflet announcing the publication. We've managed to keep the price down to $45. Please forward to interested others. Gwendolyn Midlo Hall >>

    3. Many years ago the Murrays lived in Independence, where I met and married a "native" of Independence..........don't know if they were born there or not. Nicholas Murray/Murry published (also owned, I believe) the Independent newspaper for years, wrote his column on hunting forbears. They lived across the street from the elementary school, I knew them slightly, they had 4 sons. Dorothy Murray was in our Tangipahoa Chapter DAR but was in failing health by the time I became active in 1985. They had moved to Hammond in later years and he published the Hammond Vindicator till it was sold. She died first, them some time later he died. Their son, Nick, lives in Kentwood, I met him at a Tangipahoa Parish Genealogical Society meeting 3-4 years ago, Delll Magee Clawson who wrote the "The Fields of Broom" was speaker that night in Kentwood and he was there. I don't recall the Murrays ever moving to Utah.........could have but I never heard about it, I'm pretty sure they were living here when they died. This is the way I remember them, anyway. I have never seen their book but used to read his column, once in a while, many years ago.........My memory my not be too accurate, but this is the way I remember them......... The following is from: ROOTSWEB REVIEW: RootsWeb's Genealogy News Vol. 2, No. 34, 25 August 1999, Circulation: 352,504+ (c) 1999 RootsWeb.com, Inc. <http://www.rootsweb.com/> RootsWeb.com, Inc., P.O. Box 6798, Frazier Park, CA 93222-6798 Editors: Julia M. Case and Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG <[email protected]> * * * WWI DRAFT REGISTRATION CARDS AT NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS ADMINISTRATION, SOUTHEAST REGION (Date Issued: August 23, 1999) The following information is provided by the National Archives and Records Administration, Southeast Region, in response to recent postings on several list serves concerning World War One (WWI) Draft Registration cards maintained at our facility. Unfortunately, the original posting, and subsequent, altered postings provided incorrect information about these holdings and related reference procedures. To better serve the public and the research community, we provide the following information and guidance concerning the WWI Draft Registration cards: 1. The original cards, in excess of 24 million, were received at our facility a number of years ago. Upon their receipt, they were boxed and arranged by NARA employees. The original arrangement was by state, thereunder by county or draft board, and thereunder alphabetically by the registrant's last name. The cause for arrangement by draft board instead of county is due to the size of certain cities. For example, New York City had in excess of 180 boards, Chicago had over 80. As a result, we require a street address when searching for cards in most large cities. 2. The cards were later microfilmed by representatives of the Genealogical Society of Utah in the exact order they were originally arranged; each NARA regional facility has a copy of the microfilm for the states in the region that it serves. Any patron wishing to use microfilm will find the cards arranged exactly as they are in the box. The arrangement of the cards has never been changed. 3. NARA, Southeast Region, has provided a request form for these records for a number of years. The forms can be ordered via e-mail ([email protected]), telephone (404-763-7383), or in writing (NARA, Southeast Region, 1557 St. Joseph Avenue, East Point, GA 30344). 4. At a minimum, the following information is required from the requestor for NARA staff to conduct a search for draft registration cards: o Full name of registrant o Complete home address at the time of registration (to include county) o Name of nearest relative 5. Additional information, if known, which can improve the thoroughness of a search includes: o Birth date o Birthplace o Occupation of registrant 6. In July, 1997 NARA established an updated fee schedule for services provided to the public. The minimum mail-order fee for photocopies for each WWI Draft card was increased from $6.00 to $10.00, a fee which includes both sides of the card. Patrons need not request that both sides of the card be copied, and patrons need not submit a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) with their request. Walk-in customers can make self-service photocopies of the original records for $0.10 per side. Please contact individual regions for their policies regarding microfilm copies. These fees are copying fees only; there is no charge for searches when a record is not located. The staff of the NARA, Southeast Region, remains committed to assisting our patrons in anyway possible, including the timely and accurate dissemination of information concerning our holdings and services. The WWI Draft Registration cards represent only one of many significant collections of historical records maintained by the Region that are invaluable for genealogical research. For additional information regarding our holdings and services, visit our home page at <http://www.nara.gov/regional/atlanta.html>. JAMES J. 3. Hi all. The Murry's who did the Hunting for Bears series lived in Hammond. They were close friends of my Dad. Mr. Murry also was a newspaper editor and my Dad was with the Ag. Extension Service as a dairy specialist and wrote a weekly column for Mr. Murry's paper. They are probably dead by now as they were elderly the last time I saw them in the early 70's. They were a delightful couple!
