    2. Hi Pam, I don't have any genealogical information that I can pass on to you, but I can tell you this: there are some Goins in St. Landry Parish. Whether they are yours or not, I don't know, but it is not a name that is plentiful here. Gladys LaGrange de Villiers [email protected] http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Gallery/3653

    2. Hi, Just a note here: when writing to clerks of court or any other entities like that, make sure they understand whether you want them to look up all of this stuff for you. If you request copies of specific documents, they should charge you only for the copies. Gladys LaGrange de Villiers [email protected] http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Gallery/3653 In a message dated 9/1/99 1:30:11 PM, [email protected] writes: << Just a short note to let some know what some cost in genealogy are now. Last May I faxed a letter to the West Feleciana Clerk of Court trying to see if they have any info on my gg-grandfather, Charles Carey Simmons, which little is known about. In yesterdays mail I received a copy of the fax I sent to them and attached to it was a bill for $33.00. In the description it reads: Research Marriage, Probate, and Land Records $30.00 Copies $ 3.00 >>

    3. I had a very positive experience with the Clerk's Office. I telephoned them to inquire about fees for making a copy of marriage application for my great grandfather. The lady who answered the phone told me to be patient as they are "short-handed" and that if they had to do any research, they would have to charge for it. I sent them $5.00 to cover the costs of the copy. I didn't need a certified copy but thought that they may have to look a little longer for something for the mid 1800's. Two weeks later I got my copy. For someone who has to do all their research long distance, I thought that it was a very good deal. Amanda Hoshman Atlanta, GA

    3. Hi Well, I found in print what was rattling around in my memory: Thomas Shaw of Greenville District, SC, son of William Shaw and Susanna GOWEN m. 4/22/1819 to Elizabeth Fogleman of MS... 3. Chris, I have researched records in East Feliciana and was charged $1 per page for copies, which is about the same as many clerk of court offices--although many libraries only charge 10-25 cents. I have no idea what they charge for research, but it's great that they found something. Perhaps you should request a description of the copies they found. My ggg grandfather, James Brown, married Margaret Simmons in 1809. This was his second marriage and I obtained a copy of the marriage certificate from Liberty, Amite Co., Ms. He lived in the Feliciana area, but at that time, protestant marriages were performed in Liberty, I have been told. Just wonder if your Charles Carey Simmons could be related to Margaret. I have no data on her. Let me know if you feel there could be a connection. Nita

    2. Pam - I am trying to find a Rebecca Brown from the Rapides Parish, LA and Calcasieu Parish, LA area. She had two sisters. Susan Elizabeth Brown( b. 1851) m. Milton Brown Baggett and Huldah Brown (b. 1842)m. Richard Parker. By chance do you have any idea if she might be the Rebecca you are looking for? I am at a dead end on my Rebecca because I don't have any idea who she married. Thanks, Margaret [email protected]

Then in 1880 Tyler Co TX, 1900 Trinity Co TX which is where my grfather was born and he and his 2 brothers were living with them in this census since their mother had died earlier that year in childbirth. If any of this strikes a cord with someone I would appreciate info. Thanks Pam > >Assuming the couple was in Rapides circa 1840s, did you try federal census>for Rapides for 1840 and 1850? 1. [LA-LGHS-L] Cost of research
    2. Chris Tomlinson
    3. Just a short note to let some know what some cost in genealogy are now. Last May I faxed a letter to the West Feleciana Clerk of Court trying to see if they have any info on my gg-grandfather, Charles Carey Simmons, which little is known about. In yesterdays mail I received a copy of the fax I sent to them and attached to it was a bill for $33.00. In the description it reads: Research Marriage, Probate, and Land Records $30.00 Copies $ 3.00 If I want to see what they have I will mail in the money, but no clues as to what they found for my $33. All a part of business I guess. Are these figures inline with other parishes? Chris Metairie, LA

    3. Hi There were Goins (Gowen, etc.) that I have seen in Hebert's Records of SW LA in the 1800-1820 era. It seems like one married into the Shaw family and that's why it caught my eye. >From the little that I've researched that family, I have found them living in Pendleton District, SC (which no longer exists, but did at that time) and they were also at the extreme west end of NC. There were several place names with one spelling or another of Gowen, goin' way back. I have also seen the name listed at the Melungeon site, which would make since--the Melungeons lived in the west end of the Carolinas. I'd like to find out more about them also, will gladly share info. Hope this gives you some little direction. Jan in CA Gene & Pam Tatum wrote: > > I hope someone out there can be of help. 2. OOOps, forgot, I have one other Womack: Pearl Womack born January 06, 1890, died January 1976 in Monroe, Ouachita Parish married Albert Millard Kinnison. I assume that either Pearl was married to a Womack and I do not know her maiden name or she had 2 children out of wedlock: Sherman Womack and Rudolph Womack. Any takers on this Womack? Lisa
