Jean is French for John. Two out of three names were John chances are his middle name was John.
I sent for my grandfathers Birth certificate to get more information on his father. Much to my surprise, not did I only find out that he was not born in July 7,1885( Like his ss, marriage & death certificates stated) but I found out, my grandfather was a twin . ( fraternal) I dont even think he knew this. I was told that his mother died during childbirth and that his father put him & his 2 sisters & one brother in an Orphanage ( St. Ann in N.O.) obviously they grew up knowing their siblings because I read the names in his obituary. The mystery that I am trying to solve is, on his birth certificate his twin was named Marie Felicite' Borel.... But in his obituary it stated that he had a brother & two sisters one names Marie & one named Felicite. I am pondering the thought that possibly the twin died and the mother later gave birth to two daughters & named one the dead childs 1st name & the other her middle. Or is it possible that the mother would name one daughter Marie Felicite & the other daughters 1st name Felicite?? Never the less if a child were to have been born & died or was stillborn, would it state the child was dead on the birth certificate, ( remember the date is 1885) I dont know if I should assume the mother named the children these two names or if the twin died. Please help if you can Barbara Borel [email protected]
You are going to get many responses regarding this question!!! Jean and John are pronounced almost the same. Jean is the French version of John. Hi Barbara, I'm new to genealogy, too, but i believe your working "backwards" is the time-honored, preferred way to do it. You use the *known* to find the hidden mysteries. Both of my parents, born in 1913 and 1918, were amazed when, in their 60s, they received their birth certificates for the first time. My father always thought his middle name was "Franklin" and that his mother named him for Ben Franklin. His birth certificate, however, said "Frank" -- named for his father and great-grandfather. A huge letdown! My mother's father told her that her middle name was "Maude" -- a source of much distress since there was a mule named Maude in the funnies. Of course every kid in school rubbed-in that "fact." Her birth certificate revealed that her name was "Miriam," named for her maternal grandmother. She was delighted! Record-keeping before World War II was not the center of the universe that it has become, especially with the use of computers. My sons have had to use their birth certificates several times in their less than 35 years of life. You probably should document whatever *he* thought his middle name was as well as the one that's on his birth certificate. And don't discount the possibility of two, or more, middle names. My mother and i have 3 middle names: birth certificate, another one added at baptism (to honor yet another family member), and the third one that we picked when time came for confirmation. (My father's first name was used at baptism and confirmation.) Have fun rooting around! I am looking for information about William Henry Welch, born in Ga. migrated to Sabine Parish La., Anacoco (Sandy Creek area), year unknown. He may have lived in texas for a short time. He was born in 1857 and died in 1923 I think. He was a farmer, one of his 8 sons was also named William Nolan Welch, my father. My grand mother was Elizabeth Jane Welch, born in Miss. The names of the children were Jessie, John, Ella, Orin, Olen, Clarence, Sevlla, William, Russell, Floyd, and the oldest girl was a half sister that died at an early age. Grandmother died in 1971 died in Vernon Parish, outside of Anacoco. If you have any information about the Welch family or my grand mothers family (Elizabeth Jane Donahoe {unknown spelling} Welch) I would be very grateful if you would contact me.
