The names I am researching are: de la >CHAISE and VILLERE. Hi Stephanie, I found a reference to the surnames you mentioned and Manumission in Conrad's abstracts of the St Charles Parish Civil Records. It is referred to as "Book 11, 1781, Document No. 441 dated 19 Nov 1781. This document states that Louise de La Chaise, Widow Villere, sold her slave Etienne his freedom for 400 pisatres. I know of two ways to get copies of the original document. First, you can write to the Clerk of Court for St Charles Parish (in Hahnville, LA, I believe) and ask for a photocopy of this document. A second source would be to review the microfilm of the original document at your local LDS library. Check the LDS catalog entries for St Charles Parish "Original Acts" for the year 1781. AFAIK, all of the colonial civil records of St James Parish are missing or destroyed except for the period of 1782-1787. Hope this helps! 2. Hi gang: Have a book for a few weeks called: Nugent Pioneers of South Central Louisiana by Sarah Bowman Hann. There are about 50 pages of surnames...too numerous to list here, but this book does cover areas outside of central LA also. It has geneologies as well as obits, newspaper articles etc and lists the sources that these can also be found. If you think your people might be in here....I'll be happy to look for you and let you know what is in here.

    1. [LA-LGHS-L] Re: CARTER and BROWN family in SE LA
    2. Rachelle, Do you know what parish? My grandfather's first wife was a BROWN. Her name was Ruth Rachelle Brown aka Missy from Sharp Station in East Baton Rouge Parish. She was the daughter of Edward and Anna Ricks Brown. My grandfather and Ruth were married around 1919 had 2 children Abner and Lula. She died in 1923 of pneumonia. One child, Abner was raised by her brother Emanuel Brown and his wife in Mound City, Illinois. Lula was raised by my grandfather's mother's sister Albertha Curry Wells aka Tooga in Baton Rouge. My grandfather's second wife was Beatrice CARTER of Baton Rouge, LA. She was the daughter of Joe an Josephine Scott CARTER. The reason why I responded to your note is because your name is Rachell and you're from Missouri. My grandfather and grandmother moved to Mound City, Illinois after they were married, where my father and all of his siblings were born. This may be a long shot but, they did a lot of business in Cape Girardo, MO which is about 20 minutes from Cairo, IL. My grandfather's name was Cleveland FORBES. Some of Ruth's Siblings were Ellen, Mary Ellen, Abner, Emanuel, Mercedes and one I think called Leaster. I did not go into detailed research with them because they are not in my direct lineage. Does any of this sound familiar? CherrylM Baton Rouge, LA

    1. [LA-LGHS-L] assylums
    2. R. B.
    3. I am wondering with these postings about orphages and assylums if there is a place that lists these on the web. I too had a relative die in "the assylum" in the 1848 near Baton Rouge. How many of those are there? Thanks for the postings on this list! Rachelle Brown ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
