    1. [LA-LGHS-L] Bunkie Cemetery.
    2. Ethel S.
    3. Is the cemetery in Bunkie documented and maybe on line? Anyone know something about this? And also, more about Loyd Hall. Who did it belong to and what is some of the history on it; or where can I find info on this? Thanks, Ethel.

Check with the Chamber of Commerce in Alexandria, Rapides Parish. they should have flyers or call the plantation and ask for information. I've been there (3-4 years ago) for a tour. It is a "working" plantation. Has a two story house, etc. very nice. I think the owner was/is a part of the chamber board... Ann something or other. Annette

    3. The ones that I found were mostly in the first three volumes of the "blue books" Southwest Louisiana Records. So, I guess they have to be pretty far back to be included in these records. Volume three stops at 1840. I found a little more in vol 4, but most of that I already had. No, the churches didn't do birth certificates, but many of the records give the age of the person at the time of baptism. Good luck finding your folks. 2. Jan, what books are you speaking of? I practically moved into our library and have never found anything on my Baptist/Lutheran ancestors in books even similar to Father Hebert's books. I can find some things at the churches where they were married, etc. I'd love to be able to find this in the library. Father Hebert's books gives the name of each church for each happening, therefore you can go to these for documentation. Not birth certificates which of course you have to mail off for. I was just trying to make what seemed like a very hard task into something simple for the person asking the question, since I live in the Lafourche area. Terrebonne to be exact. Louvenia P.S. Please send me the name of the books you're speaking of. I've been stuck on one ancestor for six years.

    3. Louvenia and all. Just because your ancestors were not Catholic did NOT keep them out of the early church records.... NONE of mine were and they were all recorded. Since the Catholic Church was, for the most part, the only show in town AND since for a while, it was the LAW that folks be bapt., married in the Catholic church (no matter what their relig. was), most of the Protestants did go there for those kinds of things. AND, most of mine were either "English Catholics" (Church of England) or Episcopal, the Catholic Church was pretty close to what they were accustomed to in the places they came from..... So, be sure and check these books for your folks, no matter what religion they were. I would not have nearly the information that I have were it not for these books. They are wonderful resources. BUT, you must ALWAYS go for the original record. My family found the maiden name of a grgrgramma by ordering the marriage record of a brother of the ancestor! We had been searching for this FINE lady's maiden name for years! The name was NOT in Hebert's books but was on the original document. Hope this helps someone. Happy Hunting. 3. Thanks to all for your reply. I am researching my entire Maternal line rooted in Louisiana from Maryland. I know I will have to go/ contact to the Library of Congress in DC to see if they have the Death Index on Microfilm. Months ago, I contacted Illinois Archives and they actually sent to me a computerized sorted Index by surname and County of Death records dating from 1900 to 1946 for $5.00. I thought Louisiana might have a similar capacity. I have very little information on what happened to some of these ancestors. Last July, I may have neglected THANKING everyone on this list for their help and support. My only excuse -- excitement. I was to visit Louisiana for a few days and was looking for my Ggrandfather's Grave in the Thibodaux area. His death certificate, indicated he was buried at "St. John". I received so many search ideas and well wishing. I appreciated that. Although I (we) did not find his grave, we did get a clearer idea where he might be buried. Well the partial answer to the mystery is: "St. John" referred to on his Death Certificate most likely refers to the "St. John" area of Thibodaux. We visited most of the major cemetaries in the area but may have missed a few. (We = Brother, Sister, Son and Nephew) I am planning another trip when I can do more research and spend more time at looking. 2. James, the best place to search the Lafourche etc., areas is to go to the library. In Houma, our library has extensive information. But the most important one is Father Hebert's books. He has every listing of every birth, death, marriage, Christening, etc. That is, if your ancestors were Catholic. And most of the Acadians, Cajuns, were. There are a great number of books done on indivual families. Our library also has an in-house genealogist. I did my husband's entire line never leaving Houma and going no place other than the library. Hope this helps you. Louvenia Solar

    2. To the friend who needs the explanation about the cemetery: There have been many muggings in the cemeteries. I was at a golf luncheon and a speaker there who talked on the graves and their origins, etc., said that it is not safe to go there alone. This man was an expert on the cemeteries. I live in Houma, LA, which is about fifty miles south of N.O., and I have heard and read about the muggins. Louvenia Solar

    3. Hi This is a long shot...I'm wondering if anyone has ever run across a list of soldiers (more or less) who accompanied Mina, Cpt. Campbell and James Long (and his wife Jane, daughter and a maid) to the Galveston/Point Bolivar area of TX in 1821. There was supposedly about 100 of them. Some went to Mexico but most stayed behind on the island in TX until rations got low and then headed back to LA. (The expedition to Mexico was a failure and Long died there.) Am trying to find out if some of my relatives, who lived in LA at the time and moved to Bolivar Peninsula ten or so years later, were among them. Jan
