    3. Another aspect that I forgot to mention was the listings of Post Offices in La. They were often listed under the name of the person who had a general store in the community, which no longer exists. Call your local postmaster to get the address of where to write for those old listings. I can think of two such instances in Assumption Parish called "Tallieu" another called "Star," and one in Lafourche Parish called "Chula." And you won't find any on a modern map. I searched for years for "Democrat" ARK (where my grandmother was born in 1896), finally found it on a very old map (in St. Francis Co.) but it is now an open field with no houses or anyone living there and even the natives never heard of it when I visited St. Francis County a number of years ago.

    1. [LA-LGHS-L] Who did Sarah Lavina marry?
    2. Sarah Lavinia GREEN, daughter of Richard GREEN b. 1806 Eng. and Virginia Ann HARRISON b. abt 1813 LA, was born about 1840 in Rapides Par., LA. By the 1860 census, her father had died and she was living with her mother and siblings in Imperial Calcasieu Parish. I suspect she married shortly after that census. Due to the burning of the courthouse and all records we may never know who she married. They may have lived in the vicinity of Kipling, LA, as did her mother and some siblings. Her siblings, and possibly her children, were named: Mary J. "Molly", Harriet, Rebecca Ann, William Oneal (O'Neal ?), Richard James, Charles, Ellen O., David Marion, and Preston Paul GREEN. Please contact me if this sounds like a Sarah in your family. Carolyn

    3. Hello list, Does anyone have the following names in their databases? SULPICE, BELIN, BELLIN, BOUROT, BOROT, WINGERTER, WIRTH? I'm especially interested in SULPICE. Frederick Louis SULPICE immigrated from France to NEW ORLEANS about 1860. He was only 21 years old. He married a widow, BLANCHE, 8 years older than himself. She had a daughter by first marriage. Not sure whether her maiden name of first married name was BOUROT/BOROT or BELIN/BELLIN. Old documents list all four spelling. One child lists his mother's maiden name as BELIN, another said it was BELLIN, and a third said it was BOROT. Frederick Louis SULPICE may have fought in a war. An F. Sulpice is listed in the LA militia. Also listed was an unknown J. SULPICE. Cannot find further evidence of J. Sulpice. Cannot find passenger ship entries for Sulpice except for a trip BLANCHE SULPICE made with TOM ????SULPICE and their four children to France when the youngest was 6 years old. Frederick may have had relatives he brought his family back to see. But was TOM a nickname for Frederick Louis? The microfiche clearly says "Tom." They were on the SS Hohenzollen Nov. 1, 1881 from Bremen to Galveston, Texas. But they lived in New Orleans. Why wouldn't they take a ship directly to the port of New Orleans in 1881. Would they have gone overland from Galveston to N.O? Or would they have taken a smaller ship from Galveston to N.O? I put in a request to an online antique shop looking for something Frederick and his son Henry may have produced in their shop: F. Sulpice and Son, makers of surveyors instruments, opera glasses and maritime instruments. A family genealogist said she has not found them in any New Orleans cemeteries. Thank you for any help. 3. Only ARK and NC have Cleveland Counties. I believe someone misread the old handwriting and it is Claiborne Parish LA.

    1. [LA-LGHS-L] Re: Cleveland Parish?????????
    2. Amanda, could it possibly be Claiborne Parish? Sometimes the recorders of old not familiar with the actual parish/county name, wrote it as it was heard. And sometimes folks were hard of hearing or words got mispronounced when the word was not heard often. Just a thought. Joyce

    2. Amanda, There is not currently a town by that name in LA. I don't know if there might have been one that no longer exists. The Baton Rouge Morning Advocate once did a series of articles on "Old Towns" and then published it in book form. Where do you reside?
