Below is a short excerpt from an article I wrote several years ago about how our warm climate repeats the climate of our ancestors. "Just like today, Christmases were often described as 'spring-like,' 'warm summer-like,' and 'beautiful warm sunny day.' Such depictions were taken from Judge W. W. Edwards' diary. From 1883 through 1894, Judge Edwards made these and similar entries on seven of twelve Christmases in Abbeville." Below is another description of weather that was taken from the Planters' Banner. "In St. Mary, bananas are still untouched by the frost, gardens look green and springlike, the brass is springing up as though the winter months had passed away, and fires are hardly eve needed, even mornings and evenings. And this is the 29th day of December 1867." Surely, the weather in Vermilion Parish was much like this at that time. So, the next time you hear someone say that our weather in December is so much warmer than it used to be, you will know better. Such mild weather often extended into January too, and there were descriptions of how fruit trees were budding even late in January. Ken Dupuy

My Roberts ancestors came to East Feliciana Parish from South Carolina in the early 1800s. From there some of them moved on to St. Helena and Washington Parishes and finally to southwestern Mississippi in the late 1800s. Question: since Tangipahoa Parish was carved out of existing parishes during Reconstruction, are their records strictly from the time the parish was created, or should I search there for information about family who might have resided in the geographic area that is now Tangipahoa Parish but was, when they lived there, a different parish? The workshop will focus on techniques for finding the origins of Irish ancestors using resources available in the United States. It will include case studies, research strategies, and tips on how to separate fact from "blarney" in oral family traditions. Gary, it is quite probable that the original lodge, in the 1860s and 1870s, was located across Main Street from the Old Masonic Cemetery, thus their lot would have been outside the city limits. There is an incomplete record, in the burnt conveyances, with Dr. W.D. White involved, and it is about the lodge. Remember that he was Abbeville's first Worshipful Master. On May 11, 1885, the Masons purchased lot 46 from Ophelias Bourque for $125. Therefore, the Masons had not begun their lodge on lot 46 until after that time, not in 1884 as yesterday's newspaper article stated. 9-12-85, 8-25-1888, 9-22-1888, 10-20-1888 are the dates in the Meridional , that deal with the leasing of the temporary courthouse, etc. In most instances, these dates cover the meetings of the PJ sometime prior to these dates. Below is a segment of an article that I wrote years ago on the courthouse. This segment deals with the temporary courthouse following the destruction of our courthouse by fire in April 1885. "Almost immediately a search was made for a site to erect a temporary courthouse. The Masonic Lodge, which had lost its meeting room on the second floor of the courthouse, as well as its accessories in the fire, came up with a solution. The lodge's leaders entered into a contract with the police jury to have a temporary courthouse built on the lodge's lot (46 Megret's portion). Representing Abbeville Lodge No. 192 were Gus Godchaux, Jos. T. Labit, Jacob Isaacs, and John A. Brookshier. Howard Hoffpauir, president of the police jury, represented his governmental body. The police jury agreed to erect a $1,500 building--30 feet by 60 feet--on lot 46. For its part, the lodge agreed that in consideration of the above and of the use of half of the upper story of the building for three years, rent free, it would agree to buy this building from the parish at its actual cost when erected, less wear and tear. By the middle of June, the brick foundations for the temporary courthouse had been laid, and by July 1885, construction had begun. By the way, the police jury accepted Solomon Wise's bid for the lumber, delivered at Mr. Wise's own steamboat landing, which was in the middle of the block between Port and Lafayette Streets. How many slow, laborious trips did the delivery wagons have to make? They probably traveled on Port, around Magdalen Square, up Concord and then turned left on State Street to lot 46. Surely State Street wasn't a one-way street then! Another unknown is whether the lumber arrived at the landing on board a steamboat, or a schooner. Schooners often delivered goods to Abbeville By September 5, 1885, the painters had finished their job, and large safes had been moved into the courthouse on lot 46. On October 12, 1885, the police jury met one last time at the Hook & Ladder Co. building, then adjourned immediately to meet at the temporary courthouse. Work on the new courthouse began on June 25, 1890, more that five years after the previous courthouse had been destroyed. For the next six months, the construction of this building gave Abbevillians something to pass their time and something to talk about. This was a major project for our town. Fires had not yet destroyed chunks of Abbeville; Sol Wise had not yet had his brick store built, and the current St. Mary Magdalen church was about 20 years away from construction. Therefore, our citizens had not witnessed such a project, at least not in Abbeville. So, curiosity and awe must have been nearly palpable during all those months around the courthouse square." In 1923 the deed stated that he was unmarried. Also I have a report from Schoen Funeral Home in Covington,La. that has a SARAH V. LONG that died on Jan.22,1926. I'm not sure if it is her. It stated that her daughters took care of the arrangements. No place of burial was mentioned. Any help or thoughts on how to go about finding where she is buried would be most appriciated. Southwest Louisiana Biographical & Historical By Wm. Henry Perrin Printed in 1891 and reprinted in 1971 Many of you are familiar with this book. It has so much information about the people and towns in our area. However, like all printed works, it is riddled with typographical errors, particularly on page 249 of the section on Vermilion Parish. I’d like to correct the errors on that page, based on my extensive research. Let’s start with the “Present Council.” I’ll bracket the corrections. James [A]. Petty, [Ophelias] Bourque, [E. A]. Mazerolle, [Dr.] C. J. Edwards, and J. J. Abadie, secretary; Euphemon LeBlanc town Marshal. The mayor, [J. O. Lege], was not even listed. Let’s move on to the “Business Directory,” also on page 249. Joseph T. Labit, [Ulyssee] Abadie, [Ophelias] Bourque, Miss Lorenzo Blanc, Heirs of David Beer, Jean Boyance, J. M. [Beauxis], W.H. Chevis, Lucius Theophile (perhaps not the last name of the individual), Lucius Duteil (probably Dutel), [Feray] & Wall, [Leon] J. Feray, A. J. Godard, Godchaux & Co., J. [O]. Lege, E. [Montagne], Jr., R. H. [Mills], Felix Romero, [Trahan] & Romero, Louis Thibeaux, Louis [Leotaud], A. Mouton, F. L. [Melebeck], Geo. W. Caldwell (although a brick manufacturer and brick mason, he also had a grocery store at this time.) A. [Laborde], George Schells (?), J. A. [Brookshier] (so spelled at that time), Solomon [Wise], E.G. Lemaire, P. D. Dupuy, Lege & Guydoy (more probable that it was Lege & [Gueydan], although I’m not familiar with that company. It is how Gueydan is misspelled on the last line on that page), Madam Abadie, Sylvanie [Prejean], [Eraste] Mouton, Ernest Trahan, and Aymar Bourque. Now, on to Perry’s Bridge, still on page 249. Dr. J. [T]. Hamblet, and the only other misprint of which I’m certain is Martin and Timothy [Bagley]. Again, on the last line of the page, the name should be J. P. [Gueydan]. On the top of page 250, it should read Frank [Winston]. On page 251, “The Press:” The Independent is mentioned in the Planters’ Banner as early as [1849], so it was started long before 1852. The Meridional was sold in 1879 to E. I. Addison. Mrs. Ursule Guegnon, wife of Eugene Guegnon, died in [1878], so she couldn’t have sold it in 1879, as stated. Do errors such as these exist in the other chapters? Probably so, but I’m most familiar with Vermilion Parish. Ken Dupuy
